this is better than the traditional stump. i too prefer a steel stand. however, i think that a tripod works much better as you can put your foot directly under your anvil, which means that you are directly above it and your posture is good and your blows are maximized. the bottom plate should be at least 3/4", with a urethane rubber compound killing the sound, and wide 5/8" thick steel pads providing solid support, and allowing easy movement across smooth surfaces. thanks for posting!
