Why are we getting so worked up over the word Shaheed?!? Shaheed in Islamic terminology is he who dies in the cause of Allah...doesn't necessarily mean by fighting...could be spreading the message etc. According to Hadith, and from the actions of the Prophet SAW, one must have love for his mother land. And these officers were all in their positions due to their love of their motherland. And they died serving their motherland. So yeah...I dont see the problem in calling them Shaheed.
