I was at this show! Drove 6 hours to see it, and guess who actually opened this show...Bonnie Prince Billy!...his band? Mick Turner, Jim White, and his brother Ned.
It was totally crazy. At that time i was totally obsessed with both of these groups.
Look, I like US Maple. I just wanted to say that before I say this next thing: They sound like Legion of Rock Stars covering some other band. Check it out and see if I'm bullshitting. LRS have close to 300 videos on youtube. Start with 'Mother' by Danzig, the Barney Miller Theme, 'Elvira' by the Oak Ridge Boys and 'Aint Seen Nothin' Yet' by BTO. The effect is subtle but cumulative: US Maple.
I'm guessing you didn't like my comment much, fgs. It wasn't meant to offend. US Maple are freakishly awesome, but they are also hell-bent on deconstructing conventional rock and roll. As are LRS. LRS are (sometimes) funny as hell because they poke fun at 'conventional' music. US Maple are amazing because they seem to give the finger to conventional music. US Maple are not funny. It would be funny to see LRS try to cover US Maple. Their heads would explode!
while i disagree that us maple aren't funny (they are hilarious, if you pay attention to lyrics to tunes like "breeze, its your high school"), i have to agree that LRS covering US maple would amazing. that would be complete musical disaster, in a good way.
It's really, really downtuned guitar. I think Rittmann uses really thick strings for his bottom strings, because it sounds like they're tuned down like an octave or something ridiculous.
@thewidgetqueen what gauge string do you think he is using? or does he set the neck up different? i used a bass string in place of a high e in my old band but totally messed up the guitar haha.
I to this day have vivid memories of having U.S. Maple on full blast in the tape deck of my mothers derilect old Volvo in '98. The handling of this car (some mid-eighties model, badly worn down by the time) was akin to that of a piece of turd swimming in a pool of cough syrrrup. It was great! And U.S. Maple were pretty much the perfect soundtrack for that. She got herself a new car around 2000. That sucked. But I was out of the house by then anyways... Still...
i don't mind originality or lack of, but it's worth mentioning that us maple's whole 'career' is a re-doing of 'veteran's day popy' by beefheart, but in the 90s/00s, which makes it mean something different. musically, i mean. this band is great. especially 'talker; and 'long hair...', which is more spastic ock, an had been copied itself a lot. one of the best bands of the 90s probably. why does he look like kevin costner? trivia fans respond.
No way could the Magic Band pull this stuff off. Have you heard Sang Phat Editor? It's like a new musical language. I love Beefheart, but U.S. Maple is so much more dynamic and expressive. Missouri Twist! Superior artistry.
when the drums came in at 6:56 it completely floored me.
And i still like to watch this video and pretend it's Kevin Costner on vocals

based on what i've read, and seeing them live, I think his low E is actually a bass string.
MyFairLaser 2 years ago
@daflonso he totally uses a bass string for his lowest string, I've discussed this matter with shippy, plus you can totally see it
