Dave, I loved the videos! Thanks so much for taking the time to create these! What kind of light was being held up during some of the portrait shots? And why do you only use the center focus point? I thought it was best to focus on the eye, especially for shallow DOF shots.
@captainjodie17 Hi, thanks for the kind comments. The light is a Lowel ID video light available from Prokit in the UK.
The centre focus point is the most sensitive and reliable. I always focus and recompose, therefore, focussing on the eyes then recomposing before taking the shot.
Hi Dave great work on your videos, facebook page and website! how long on average do you spend on the shots with just the bride & groom like in the above video?
@akithump Hi Dean, thanks for the kind comments. We take our Bride & Grooms for 2 or 3 10 - 15min sessions, we work really quickly and don't keep the B&G from their guests for too long. pre-planning what you are going to do helps save time.
Hi Dave, thanks for responding to my last comment. I commented earlier but the whole message didn't go through. It looks like, for the AF points, you were using just the center point most shots. But with just the bride and groom I couldn't tell (ex.: when they were walking toward gazebo&other off-center shots). Could you please explain which you used? Also if you used one shot, or AI servo for the focusing. Thanks again for all your help great help. Keep up the great work!
Hi Dave, thanks so much for responding. Your work is absolutely fantastic...
Your pictures looks so heavenly(literally). You actually make it look like the photos were taken in heaven! No joke! And the music definitely adds to that feeling. I noticed that, for the AF point, it looks like you were using just the center one(like during the recessional when everyone was talking and stuff). But then for like the shots of just the bride and groom, I wasn't quite sure if you used the auto one or just
Hi Dave, brilliant videos. I've always felt bad about using program but I agree with you the composition is the thing and it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one! I perfectly understand all shutter ect but on the day it's about relaxing your subjects as you can see in your videos. Where did you get the light from I have been looking for a light but not found a portable one. Thanks :)
@TheToby575 Hi, thanks for the kind comments. Ok, I use program mode on all my cameras. Whichever lens I have on I trust the camera all the way, so never get hung up on apertures and speeds. ISO is the important one, all my outside shots during the day are shot at 400iso, only increasing it if the light drops. Letting and trusting the cameras to do all the work allows me to concentrate on picture content. This is the way I shoot but it's not for everyone !
Hi Dave fantastic videos, one question, how do you get the images nice and soft touch eg the bride & groom in this particular video walking up the path towards the wedding hut im sure thats not the right name for it :) but iv seen a few images by you like this I love it any tips on how you achieved it in post production
@shanetralee Hi, and thanks for your kind comments. I have my own actions for processing, developed over time. There are loads of actions out there, try a few to achieve your own style. You would be amazed by how punching the contrast / saturation and adding a slight vignette makes the image so much better.
got my first wedding shoot next monday !! for close friends of mine :D still a bit nervous but have done lots of general repetitions with the bride and groom haha learned a lot from your videos !
@teknine90 Hi, nothing wrong with being nervous. just enjoy the day, let it flow, let the B&G spend time with their guests and get lots of great natural photos.
Good luck tomorrow, have fun and get some great photos.
Can I ask? What is the portable light that is being used to shine on the bride in the dark areas (in front of the mirror... on her dress in another video)? Love the videos & beautiful work! Thanks for sharing.
Congrats Dave great video, I'm seriously thinking of buying the Lowel id light dimmer model any particular battery pack you reccommend and finally how would you sum up the lowel light as a wedding tool
@shanetralee Hi Shane, and thank you for the kind comment. I use a battery pack supplied by Prokit in the UK, not sure of the model number but there are loads of options for you. I know mine is heavy! so get my assistants to carry it !!
You would have to cut off my arm to get my Lowel, that's how good I rate it !!
@davinhans Hi, thanks for your comment. I use Lightroom to edit, crop, white balance and exposure for the raws, then add the Wow to the images in Photoshop CS5
Hi there very nice job I really like the way you shoot, I have a question, do you shoot RAW or JPEG, and why? what type of lenses you usually use? if you can answer my questions that will be helpful for me, thank you so much!!!
@soloma1 Hi, thank you for your kind comment. I shoot everything in Raw, we have a lot of difficult usually dark lighting in the UK, and shooting raw gives me more flexibility to adjust the files, especially mid tones.
I shoot most of my weddings with the Canon 17 - 40 F4 and the 70 - 200 F2.8 zooms. However, when we have difficult light we will use fast aperture primes like the 24mm F1.4, 35mm F1.4, 50mm F1.2 and 85mm F1.8
Hello thnks for the video. Just a question from a beginner, Why do you have a diffuser on with the flash head pointing forward and in daylight, Just curious if I am missing something
@MrRaviPeter Hi, thank you for your comment. There is no reason at all to have the diffuser on during the day, truth is I have been using it on for that long I know exactly how much light the flash is going to output using ETTL when doing the formals, so I know when to apply any compensation to the flash power or not.
Hope this helps and good luck with your photography.
@mysticalelement Hi, thank you for your comment. The light is a Lowel ID video light available from Prokit in the UK. The power pack I am using is actually for the Canon flash, the video light has it's own battery pack.
Hi Dave, really like your style of photography, both your pictures and the way you interact with your clients. It's clear you've spent a great deal of time perfecting your work.
I've only been covering weddings for about 2yrs, but found your videos very helpful - better than standard tutorials ect. My website is ( andychambersphotography.co.uk) If you have any tips in which i can improve my photography, i'd be very grateful. Cheers
@aFLYER1980 Hi, many thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed the videos. I have 3 weddings this weekend so will check out your site as soon as I get the time.
@mayurfitness Hi, thank you for your comment. I always use the 'P' program setting and overide the settings if required. I also use a high ISO, 1600 in most cases.
Also some photos were edited to much, giving to them a bit to much orange and/or airy effect (you know... duplicate layer and apply soft light). Mate, I hope you do not get angry with me; all of us have areas where we could get better, me included. Please feel free to have a look at my work and let me know how I can improve. Cheers...
@FotografIasi Hi, and thank you for the comments. Of course I won't get angry ... LOL We all have our own style and mine is reflected in the photography on the videos, and to be perfectly honest with you I am not old style and get hung up on the so called rules of photography. As long as I have expression and the photo I am looking for then I'm happy :-)
Will certainly check out your site over the weekend.
I like the moments you captured, candid indeed with people enjoying the moment. You were lucky to have such a beautiful and expressive bride. You got some beautiful shoots there. But in the same time I see quite a few photos where you cut limbs, heads, elbows and so on. I think a bit more care would be needed when taking the photos. Watch the edges of the frame and compose a little better.
Dave thank you for this video , more helpful than you could imagine, I use a Canon 500d and have always taken wild life pictures ,And kept away from humans, I would like to use some of techniques for family party's at Christmas, always been scared of bouncing light, now I'm going to give it a go.
These were so well done and very informative! I especially loved seeing your process for setting up shots. I hope you put up more of these types of videos. :) I am curious, how did you get the bride and groom to spend so much time with you? Did you do those posed shots before the reception or after?
@LydiaKrow Hi, thank you for the kind comment. The B&G session was done between the family shots and the wedding breakfast. We work very quickly and had around 30 mins to do all the photos. We know the venue so knew roughly what we wanted to get with them. A little pre-planning especially for the B&G photos always helps.
@DaveNunnWeddings That's amazing! From the locations chosen and the care taken with the photos, I assumed more time had passed. 30 minutes, wow. :) Thanks for sharing - the pre-planning tip is well demonstrated!
Wow - thanks so much for uploading this series - definitely the best i've found. This is very good information for upcoming photographers - I have assisted a few photographers at weddings and their knowledge is worth more than gold! thanks sooo much!!
@hannibaljim Hi, yes I use flash whenever I need to, mostly on photos outside, group shots etc to kill the shadows. Inside if I want to retain the atmosphere without flash I just up the ISO to around 1600 and use fast lenses. My cameras are always on P mode with the flash set to ETTL
@larkolena Hi, thanks for the comment. Yes I use a video light during the day to kill unwanted shadows, but mostly for evening shots or dark areas inside to create some gorgeous lighting effects.
Dave I am shooting my first wedding shortly. I am so glad I stumbled upon your video. It gives great insight on how to move about the wedding. I enjoyed all of the tips. Thanks so much.
What a brilliant collection of videos! really helpful to see how you set up your day and has given me loads of new ideas for my next (2nd) wedding. Thank you.
Dave you have inspired me so much, I am going to photograph my sister's wedding and it will be my first wedding as the main photographer, your video has given more confidence
I love the videos, I'm new to wedding and noticed my nervousness came through in my pictures. I began to realize I needed to slow down and take command, and that is was I caught in your videos. But how long did it take you to get all those shots in so many places. I'm usually afforded one hour between ceremony and recption.
You did so many things that I really liked. You taught me a lot! I like the portable lighting, but I did notice you used your flash too. I hope there're more videos coming.
@chrioii Hi, thank you for your kind comments. We normally get around 1.5hrs for photos in the UK, we work in short bursts but work really fast !! Your nerves will get better with more experience :-) We are planning more videos at some stage but not sure when yet as they take a lot of work and planning!
Thank you so much for posting these videos. They are a great motivation and help for young photographers such as myself. I think you do a great job directing the people and moving them into natural poses. How do you balance the time when you are directing the couple and the time when you stay in the background? How many 15 minute sessions would you have with the couple during the course of one wedding day?
@bjornterlegard Hi, thanks for your kind comment. We let the B&G have around 20mins mixing it with their guests, and normally do a couple of 10 - 15min sessions with the B&G, we also work really fast !!
@polilollo Hi, thank you for your comment. I don't get annoyed at weddings, we only take a few family shots so it's not so bad :-) An assistant / second shooter is great, they can take photos from different angles etc and help with the lighting set ups ... I love to use several locations for my B&G shots and work very quickly. We work with 5 cameras! Saves lens changing all the time.
I LOVED THIS VIDEO! AN THE MUSIC WAS AWSOME! IM SHOOTING MY FIRST WEDDING AN IM KINDA SCARED SMH GOD WILLING EVERYTHING GOES WELL... AS A MATTER OF FACT I HOPE IT GOES LIKE YOURS. U GUYS ARE INCREDIBLE!
@kingdom856 Hi, thank you for your kind comments. If you watch the videos from the blog or website the music is even better ... I had to change it for YouTube :-(
Good luck with your first wedding, just relax and enjoy it.
Thanks for posting this. You have given my wife and I direction on working together for the wedding. Is that your wife? Do you have any tips for a photography TEAM at the wedding vs a single photographer?
Truly inspirational. Many, many thanks from Munich, Germany.
@michaelandcarina Hi, and thank you for your comment. Yes Emma is my wife. Working as a team you will capture a lot more natural moments from a wedding than one photographer would. We both take photos during most of the day but with the Bride and Groom alone only one of us takes the photos, with the other checking everything is ok with posing, lighting and the dress etc.
Wow! Thank you so much for posting. I love your direction & interaction with your subjects. My weddings always seem more chaotic, especially in regard to time. Do you mind sharing how you get bride & groom to spend time like this. Also would love to know what brand of video light your using, & the lens your using for your group shots?
@lovelindsayjade Hi, thank you for your kind comments. All our Bride and Grooms know beforehand that we require a couple of 15min sessions with them. Pre-planning before any wedding is very important. The video light I am using is a Lowel ID available from prokit, and the lens I am using for the group shots is the Canon 17 - 40mm F4.
@kycruisecrazy Hi, and thank you for your kind comment. I do quite a lot of post processing to my images. A digital image straight from camera always needs help to punch it up .... I also add effects to some of our images.
My name is Matt and I am a 21 year old aspiring photographer (among other things) I was asked to do someones wedding next month. This was incredibly helpful. I have never shot a wedding, or anything to this level of importance. I am nervous, but very excited. Thank you for the great ideas
Wow!! I can't get enough of this video! Dave, at 11:47, how did you take that shot? How did you make the background blue? Did you set the white balance to tungsten? Any post processing? Fantastic work!
@GadgetAddicted Hi, and thank you for your kind comments. The image was taken on daylight WB, then a virtual copy made in Lightroom which had the WB adjusted to make it blue. The two images opened in PS, then blended together, so the overall image was blue, but the natural skin tones brought back through.
@smclaren3 Hi, thank you for your comment. Yes I handhold the 17-40 and if the shutter speed is too slow I just up the iso to as high as 3200. I find with a wider lens you can get away with slower speeds handheld than with telephotos.
Thanks so much for putting these videos up! Watching what you do, where you stand, and seeing the equipment being used has been so helpful!! My absolute favourite how-to wedding videos on youtube! (Oh....gorgeous shots of the bride getting ready and the groom looking up whilst surrounded by the groomsmen....very nicely done)
I loved these videos. As an aspiring photographer, I've always felt that weddings would be way too stressful to do, but watching you work your magic, I feel a little more enthusiastic about it. From watching you, I realize that a 'chilled' personality on a frazzled day, will help others relax. Thank you for sharing these videos!
Dave, I loved the videos! Thanks so much for taking the time to create these! What kind of light was being held up during some of the portrait shots? And why do you only use the center focus point? I thought it was best to focus on the eye, especially for shallow DOF shots.

Do you use a flash during the wedding ? What settings would you use if no flash?
hannibaljim 5 months ago
@hannibaljim Hi, yes I use flash whenever I need to, mostly on photos outside, group shots etc to kill the shadows. Inside if I want to retain the atmosphere without flash I just up the ISO to around 1600 and use fast lenses. My cameras are always on P mode with the flash set to ETTL
Cheers

What was the f-stop on the group photo?
hannibaljim 5 months ago
@hannibaljim Hi, around F5.6 - F8 on the 17 - 40 Canon lens is good for the group shot.

are you using your video light for photo lighting??
larkolena 5 months ago
@larkolena Hi, thanks for the comment. Yes I use a video light during the day to kill unwanted shadows, but mostly for evening shots or dark areas inside to create some gorgeous lighting effects.

I hope there're more videos coming.
chrioii 6 months ago
@chrioii Hi, thank you for your kind comments. We normally get around 1.5hrs for photos in the UK, we work in short bursts but work really fast !! Your nerves will get better with more experience :-) We are planning more videos at some stage but not sure when yet as they take a lot of work and planning!
Good luck with your photography.

Thank you so much for posting these videos. They are a great motivation and help for young photographers such as myself. I think you do a great job directing the people and moving them into natural poses. How do you balance the time when you are directing the couple and the time when you stay in the background? How many 15 minute sessions would you have with the couple during the course of one wedding day?
bjornterlegard 6 months ago
@bjornterlegard Hi, thanks for your kind comment. We let the B&G have around 20mins mixing it with their guests, and normally do a couple of 10 - 15min sessions with the B&G, we also work really fast !!

Great JOB ! I love the way You relation with the people...
But anyway, Can't that be enoying ?
"... Put You here, Put You there, smile, stop, move..."
I do photos with my 7D for passion and I'll maybe do one day a wedding, but I don't think I could do so many "brakes".
In Italy they don't make so many photos in so different sittuations...
is it necessary to have an assistant and so many cameras ?
Thanks a lot for your answer, good luck for Your GREAT JOB !
Ps. see that you like it ^_^ Lorenz
polilollo 6 months ago
@polilollo Hi, thank you for your comment. I don't get annoyed at weddings, we only take a few family shots so it's not so bad :-) An assistant / second shooter is great, they can take photos from different angles etc and help with the lighting set ups ... I love to use several locations for my B&G shots and work very quickly. We work with 5 cameras! Saves lens changing all the time.
Cheers

Hi, Dave! Thanks you very much for the video!
What ISO do you use in the Church on the Canon Mark 2?
Which workflows you use after the shooting? Noise Reduction,LR or Ps, UnSharpMask...?
Can you make a video about it?
Thanks, Yury Chumakov

Thanks for posting this. You have given my wife and I direction on working together for the wedding. Is that your wife? Do you have any tips for a photography TEAM at the wedding vs a single photographer?
Truly inspirational. Many, many thanks from Munich, Germany.
michaelandcarina 8 months ago
@michaelandcarina Hi, and thank you for your comment. Yes Emma is my wife. Working as a team you will capture a lot more natural moments from a wedding than one photographer would. We both take photos during most of the day but with the Bride and Groom alone only one of us takes the photos, with the other checking everything is ok with posing, lighting and the dress etc.
Hope this helps

michaelandcarina 8 months ago
Wow! Thank you so much for posting. I love your direction & interaction with your subjects. My weddings always seem more chaotic, especially in regard to time. Do you mind sharing how you get bride & groom to spend time like this. Also would love to know what brand of video light your using, & the lens your using for your group shots?
lovelindsayjade 9 months ago
@lovelindsayjade Hi, thank you for your kind comments. All our Bride and Grooms know beforehand that we require a couple of 15min sessions with them. Pre-planning before any wedding is very important. The video light I am using is a Lowel ID available from prokit, and the lens I am using for the group shots is the Canon 17 - 40mm F4.
Hope this helps

@kycruisecrazy Hi, and thank you for your kind comment. I do quite a lot of post processing to my images. A digital image straight from camera always needs help to punch it up .... I also add effects to some of our images.

Wow!! I can't get enough of this video! Dave, at 11:47, how did you take that shot? How did you make the background blue? Did you set the white balance to tungsten? Any post processing? Fantastic work!
GadgetAddicted 1 year ago
@GadgetAddicted Hi, and thank you for your kind comments. The image was taken on daylight WB, then a virtual copy made in Lightroom which had the WB adjusted to make it blue. The two images opened in PS, then blended together, so the overall image was blue, but the natural skin tones brought back through.
Cheers

@smclaren3 Hi, thank you for your comment. Yes I handhold the 17-40 and if the shutter speed is too slow I just up the iso to as high as 3200. I find with a wider lens you can get away with slower speeds handheld than with telephotos.
