Just listen when she says "Hernani, Hernani involami",just that is already perfection and art, ABSOLUTE nobody of the other great singers who sung this aria have the technique or the courage to colour this, one of the most difficult of Verdi's arias, in the way she does. Not to mention the grupetti, the coloratura, trills, she makes music and art of all that. True,1958-59, weren't the best years of her voice already, but, with what she has, she does better than all the rest: she makes music.
You can already hear the wobble in this recording. It's such a shame! I do think the speed at which she lost weight affected her voice. You need time to undertake such a bigt change -- to adjust to the new body, to reconnect your support structure. And time off from the pressure of performing. I also think maybe the wide range of roles Callas performed worked her voice too hard. I mean, who sings Trovatore and Lakme and Wagner?

@untoa To be honest, technically yes (e.g. Monserrat Caballe). But this quibbling, I adore Maria every time she opens her mouth. :-)
