As a Scot, I've never had the chance to see this show. This interviewer actually listens to his guest and allows him time to answer. This gets the best out of the interviewee and makes for a flowing conversational style. It's like watching a young Parkinson. A good thing.
Seeing as the guest was Hitch, it worked very well. :-)

like other comentors here, every time I run across a clip with this interviewer Im deeply impressed with his lucidity and attention. He seems to really be listening and be interested as opposed to other interviewers which often seem as though they are simply reading off questions and then preparing for the next question or setting up a joke while being oblivious to what the interviewee is saying.

Try a book called The Easy Way to Quit Smoking, by Allen Carr. Worked for me, although I still crave them from time to time. You will never be rid of the addiction, but you can control it.

i think you are confusing him with sam harris who equates torture with casualties of war (if you drop a bomb innocent lives are lost, but torturing potential informants could prevent dropping a bomb).

I can only speak personally but I would agree that nicotine/and Cigarettes are(in a way)more difficult to kick than some other drugs.(for a few reasons)
Ciggy's are just so readily available and they go well with a drink and nobody is gonna lock you up for smoking(at worst you get a fine for doing it in the wrong place)but cigarettes are horribly addictive and kill loads of people!

Try a book called The Easy Way to Quit Smoking, by Allen Carr. Worked for me, although I still crave them from time to time. You will never be rid of the addiction, but you can control it.

OK, so we have two camps - pro-torture and no torture. Where does that leave us? I am a VERY big fan of dividing the country. Let's say the non-torture folks go to the west coast, and all the pro-torture folks go to the east coast.. Then, we pro-torture folks can DEFEND ourselves against ALL EMEMIES. Non-torture folks can do without national defense- since you HATE war. When the next terrorist attack comes, to whom do expect it will be against - those who can defend or those who cannot?

Being against torture and against war is NOT the same. Hitchens does not take that position. The camp that is against torture does not take that decision simply on moralistic terms, but also on the basis it is ineffective. The best interrogations were the non-violent ones: Osama bin-Laden's bodygaurd, Abu Jandal only began to talk to the CIA once they had established themselves as compassionate huan beings. He gave us the identity of 7 of the 9/11 bombers.

It's weird. When I first started watching Hitchens not that long ago I thought he was an angry, deadly serious person. I have quite the opposite impression of him now. He's funny, intelligent and very down-to-earth.
