Must. Not. Want....Still Wanting. The celibacy rule was imposed on priests centuries ago (something to do with gaining land from the men etc.). Priests were allowed to marry beforehand. I believe if the rule was lifted and they were allowed to marry again there be a greater influx a new priests. If that were allowed maybe the Church wouldn't be neck-deep in scandals at the moment involving men who shouldn't be clergymen at all.

I'm not sure where you're getting your information, but priestly celibacy dates at the very least all the way back to the Council of Elvira (309 AD), and there is evidence that it dates back to even earlier dates. Some exceptions have been made for Anglican and Episcopal priests who come into full communion with the Roman Rite after having already been married, but that's it.

As a heterosexual male who is discerning a vocation to priesthood, in am very much in favor of celibacy
