to anybody who has heard the album somehow..... can you tell me if halo of nembutals is a rocking song??? i'm intrigued from what i've heard but i'd like to hear an opinion from someone... cheers
This song (and the others I've heard off the new album) are great. Gotta buy it when it comes out. Also, why's everyone gotta be so down on the Mars Volta? I think if you understand them, you should expect changes in their musical style. It's not much of a surprise. They're just cool like that.
cedric or omar said this. "We know how people can be so linear in their way of thinking, so when they hear the new album, they're going to say, 'This is not an acoustic album! There's electricity throughout it!' But it's our version. That's what our band does -- celebrate mutations. It's our version of what we consider an acoustic album."
i think everyone would agree if I said that the fact we can manage to argue over which is best is testament to their talent . At least there isn't a unanimous vote on their worst album, surely that's a good sign?
i agree with all the anti arguers here! stop fucking worrying about which ones the best!!! first of all, how does pointing that out make a difference to anyone but your over analyzing-self?? and second who gives a shit?!!?? both of these points are directly related
to everyone thats leaving a comment about which album of theirs is better. stfu, cedric would jam a microphone in your face for over analyzing shit when really you should just listen and appreciate what they record, jackasses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's really weird, this sounds exactly like their last 4 albums. This band plan on trying something new at some point or no? I get why Jon Theodore left this band. He said it had runs its course, and he wasn't kidding.
It actually reminds me of Wax Simulacra. The first single from Bedlam: short, groovy, 11/8 timing, and just a great first single in general. I too miss the days of Deloused and Frances but I embrace this new style as well.
I didn't understand the Rush comparisons when deloused and frances were out --but now I see it, and not necessarily as a good thing. This is still more intersting than most out there, but, the Pink Floyd 'style' is really under represented -and ought to be better explored with all the technological improvements in the past few decades; perhaps their albums and skills continue to improve, but the material seems less relevant to live situations, compared to a lot of Omar's solo stuff.
Just make a better album with ur band to show us what ur talking about, instead of implying that the Mars Volta hasnt lived up the their RESPONSIBILITY to you.
Or write them a letter because i dont think that they realize how much they have to prove to you.
btw:
"less relevant to live situations, compared to a lot of Omar's solo stuff"
Man, what the hell are you talking about? When they do it live ull get it. Omar's solo stuff is a different band. If u dont like it, dont listen to it.
Lavizzle, I'm not Omar's mother or your mother and I'll make statements and hold opinions as I please (and so shall Omar and Cedric). My comment tried to make the observation that they wanted to make an LP that sounded like Pink Floyd when leaving at the drive in, and now other influences are more prominent, and the free jazz/noise influences show up more on ORL solo lp's now than in the Volta -something I miss because those tunes seemed TO ME to lend themselves to interpretation more. Cheers.
Why does everyone miss the deloused days? I mean, they were ok--and I ignored them for about three years before I found out they had another album out--Amputechture. I can't stop listening to Amputechture or Bedlam, I'd rather listen to the string tribute to TMV for the deloused tracks.
I have read on an interview from a local newspaper to Cedric that this new album will be a "pop" album. I think that is the reason for the format of this song being more "versechorusverse" compared to all their already known work.
Ok, time to man up. I hated this when I first heard it and I realize now that I hated it because I expect every Mars Volta album to sound like Lark's Tongues in Aspic and that's rather superficial. The fact of the matter is that this isn't the most progressive thing they've ever written, but it's a good fuckin' song and nothing else should matter. (I still think Ced could have done a little better than "Wet your bed so sleep in it", but no one is perfect. :D)
You should keep in mind the fact that Omar has just released a relatively new project (El Grupo Nuevo) wich has this particular "Goliath" sound, wich is a very obscure caotic-at-its-finest sound. Omar clearly wants to separate what the grupo nuevo sound will be and what The Mars Volta is, therefore making a suposedly acoustic album wich sets the tone a bit down in comparison with what he will be working with in el grupo nuevo.
Actually, TMV recorded this, and their next album, all during the recording for Bedlam. And Grupo Nuevo el Omar Rodriguez-Lopez is still Volta-y. It's clearly different, though, because it's more about Omar's style and ability than it is about the story that Volta works with. Cedric only does vocals on half the project either, and they have two bassists. Different sound and feel, though you are right about the chaotic tendencies.
que eso explica los riffs pegadizos, la ausencia de cortes instrumentales largos, la melodía de la voz pegadiza, la estructura de la canción siendo mas parecida a una canción tradicional de rock, etc.
Well... I don't know what to say about this... I feel disappointed... but... happy... but... well, I'm so much sure Omar is a fuckin' Genious... but...
I don't know... But damn! It's so good to feel confused... ^^
THANK YOU MARS VOLTA! You are the greatest band in the world not because of this song but because of your mass selection of music to choose from. Always different and pushing the envelope.
Seriously guys who cares which drummer is better. No amount of arguing is gonna bring Jon back, and Thomas has just brought his own style to the band which I see as a positive as bands have to keep evolving and bring something different to each album.
All I know is this song excites me immensley and by the sounds this is gonna be yet another ball-tearing album from the hottest fucking band on the planet!
People who think Thomas can't hold Latin beats, drum well, etc, they are just absolutely retarded.
I normally support my claims with evidence, but there's really no reason to, his drumming speaks for himself. Jon Theodore is great, but his beats are just so similar to Bonham that it gets old.
Idk why everyone always complains about Thomas. I think he's a better drummer than Jon, and I thought The Bedlam In Goliath was awesome, possibly their best. It just hit so hard. Listen to Aberinkula or Wax Simulacra! Come on that drumming is absolutely superb. But either way, I can't wait to see what this album is like.
you obviously eat your own feces since you think Thomas is better than Jon...i don't know you but i hate you for posting such a retarded comment...hate...
Um ok well I'm glad you take things so seriously. I like the drumming stye of thomas better, he hits harder. And yes, I do eat my own feces, seasoned in the finest herbs you could imagine. Love you too baby:D
Oh I'm gay am I? And what if i am, what's YOUR point. Also, YOUR use of your doesn't make sense in the context you used it. I certainly hope you're under 16, or else you're just an idiot. You are= you're. Your= belonging to someone, as in your idiocy is laughable. Goodnight good friend, Youtube conversations certainly carry a lot of weight in my life... I'm so sad now.
Cool well it's good to know. I'd rather be a fag than an absolute fucking idiot with the brain capacity of a slug. Have fun walking around with your outdated beliefs, stubborn opinions, and close mindedness.
I agree. De-loused is great, easily their best album. And although technically talented, Pridgen sounds like a fucking train wreck on the kit. He's got a lot to learn still. Needs to take a clue from someone like Neil Peart, who can play his ass off, but understands the power of subtlety when it's right.
He knows when to play subtle dumbass listen to christian scott rewind that. Sounds like a train wreck!? Thomas is a beast and theodore was great too but you have no voice in criticizing him
agreed. their earlier stuff in the form of tremulant and de-loused were their best works, but only really for the fact that they were there first. just like numerous other artists who are seen to 'flake off' later in their career. Volta's work is still excellent but the further along they get the further away it is from that original entity that hooked us in the first place.
Oooh, another track leaked off of Octahedron. And much like Since We've Been Wrong, this is damn fine. It's like a chopped-up version of Viscera Eyes. Still got the fucking badass riff, but the time signature's beyond mad.
And it's nice to see that Thomas Pridgen's gotten much more reserved in his drumming. The Bedlam In Goliath was a bitch for me to warm up to because of his thrash style. Would Jon Theodore be proud? I dunno, probably not. But it's a start.
ReallY! Bedlam came out on my birthday on Jan 29 and I went to their cd release show!, I turned 21 but they didn't sell beer there.. but yeah CONGRATS, cuz it doesn't happen to anybody
I wonder when their going to catch this one and take it off youtube like the other one I found. Fucking amazing this album better be more amazing than bedlam. I have some high hopes.
Yeah, but they still take it down. I remember finding all the songs from bedlam on youtube someone posted just like this I think I heard the album like five times before it came out. I still bought it too. This shit rocks.
man, does anyone know when there going to tour the u.s? cus i know there gonna tour europe THEN come back to us. but does anyone have any info on that?
this album was finished months ago, volta finishes albums every 3 or 4 months, it's just the company that extends it's release for w.e bullshit reason, i'm sure their next album is already half written. i've read what omar has described this album in full detail, and done countless research (cause thats the volta fiend i am) so if you can share it here than maybe i can let you know
heard this weeks ago, i fucking love it of course, i breath for this band. heyy if anyone can help find another leaked track please notify me, you dont understand how much it'd mean to me
Initially I wasn't feeling this new song. How foolish. Just like every other one of their recordings, it took a couple listens. And now I'm acquiring an addiction to it! Their music is like a drug.
Oh no we are all in for it now. the mars volta are gonna let us have it like never before. I better fill out my will cz when I hear this album i know I'm going to die and go to heaven..
This is just a simple, rockin' song, at least by Volta standards. I'm excited for the album, and I really want to hear the song that comes after this. It sounds like a sweet transition.
I can't wait for the full album to be released! If this is indicative of the feel of Octahedron, I dunno where Omar was pulling "it's gonna be more acoustic" from... although he did say "what we consider to be acoustic"... I mean, Soothsayer is "acoustic" by Omar's standards... well, if this is acoustic, I see it as Bedlam married Deloused... and it ROCKS!

It's not quite a pure acoustic song, with drumwork that supports the majority of the song and some typical Mars Volta Psychedelic guitar work.
But in essence it is a very melodic/ emotional song.
Did i mention that I'm in love with it?

He knows when to play subtle dumbass listen to christian scott rewind that. Sounds like a train wreck!? Thomas is a beast and theodore was great too but you have no voice in criticizing him
tfot34 2 years ago 2
agreed. their earlier stuff in the form of tremulant and de-loused were their best works, but only really for the fact that they were there first. just like numerous other artists who are seen to 'flake off' later in their career.

I know what you mean. It kind of killed the mood of certain songs like Lllyena.
tkn4everb 2 years ago
i donno i still think pridgen is shredding on this song but he just doenst have a solo (which it seems like he had 3 in every bedlam song)

this album was finished months ago, volta finishes albums every 3 or 4 months, it's just the company that extends it's release for w.e bullshit reason, i'm sure their next album is already half written. i've read what omar has described this album in full detail, and done countless research (cause thats the volta fiend i am) so if you can share it here than maybe i can let you know

Initially I wasn't feeling this new song. How foolish. Just like every other one of their recordings, it took a couple listens. And now I'm acquiring an addiction to it! Their music is like a drug.
smearbackcity 2 years ago
same here!
mars volta songs always requier a few listens before you can understand the song
i wonder how they ALWAYS do that lol
winnerbaby44 2 years ago
Weird, it sounds like it starts in the middle of the song.
Or is it just my imagination.

They said this is gonna be mellow, and honestly i dont see it in this song, but lol they look at EVERYTHING in their own way...
imjustkidding24 2 years ago
Mellow? No. Omar was quoted as saying that he "considered it to be their acoustic album".
gbrooks2 2 years ago
This is just a simple, rockin' song, at least by Volta standards. I'm excited for the album, and I really want to hear the song that comes after this. It sounds like a sweet transition.

I can't wait for the full album to be released! If this is indicative of the feel of Octahedron, I dunno where Omar was pulling "it's gonna be more acoustic" from... although he did say "what we consider to be acoustic"... I mean, Soothsayer is "acoustic" by Omar's standards... well, if this is acoustic, I see it as Bedlam married Deloused... and it ROCKS!
ikkyusojun 2 years ago 2
Dude! I was thinking the same exact thing! There's a lot more of a Deloused feel in this song. The grooves sound like it a lot.
