what is their violin player doing at 1:45? He appears to be unplugging that yellow telecaster from a device but then it dosent appear to get plugged into the amplifier?
@nealharpole1 This was a typical case of one Charles O Connor taking the pee......making a lame attempt to plug in his guitar after being caught red handed miming. Rest assured they were and are as good-if not better- live.
Saw their first major concert in the National Stadium, South Circular Road Dublin, about 1970. They gave the impression that they were astonished at the turn out!!!
"Celtic roots"........... would ya listen to him. Most bands evolve over time. If they didn't, we'd all still be listening to 'Rock Around The Clock'. So take the raped virgin look off your face and enjoy the song. If its Celtic orgasms you're after, listen to Planxty.
Shocking standard of TV presentation as usual, always missing the lead instrument and showing the least appropriate instead! And what's going on at 1:43 with Charles and the lead? Notice Charles' Wilko posing too?! Great find - cheers.
Chancers? Lockhart was a classically trained musician. Fean is acknowledged to be up there with Rory Gallagher technically, and Charles O Connor was one of the best violin players in the history of the instrument. Were you drunk when you wrote that?
Mosy bands responded to a shift in music tastes at that time. The song title is taken from a famous Frank O Connor story concerning the capture of a British soldier in Ireland sometime in the 40's. This subsequently became an unnofficial IRA anthem ("If you came - you stay"). It's got a good riff and it's not bland.
I'm not sure what you mean. This is one of their earliest and best known tracks, with a unique Horslips sound. They couldn't be banging bodhrans ALL the time, now could they? As for their 'roots', imagine that no band or musician ever developed or experimented with other styles. We'd all still be listening to 'Rock Around The Clock'. For fuck sake..............
what the fuck are you on about ? One of their earliest and best known tracks - your heads up your hole . you obviously don't know your arse from your elbow horslipswise - deary me
bad syntax and attention to detail on my part - left out the big question mark after the sentence " one of their earliest and best known tracks" - hence the "what the fuck you on about" - i'm a lifelong fan - even as bad as to have enjoyed the zen alligators - ssshhh !
Haha! That makes much more sense - anyway when's all said and done..horslips are just the best! Only 'The Unfortunate Cup Of Tea' is beyond argument, shite. I love the other albums for different reasons although short stories only has four good songs, but they're GREAT songs.
No wonder Eamon got the sack, he's missing a bass drum pedal (look closely during the intro!).

Fair play for posting this excellent piece. A real find. Been a fan from the 70s and can't wait for their gig in the O2 in Dublin.
I understand that Eamon Carr won't be on drums that night. Anyone got any info on that?
Cheers

Terrific song! I wasn't too keen on the rest of that album, though. I guess I'd been spoiled by "Book of Invasions" and "Aliens".

Horslips were no chancers..They were a superb
Rock Band..this video is a bit soft-rock,not really their style..It's the Bass player was the chancer.

They were chancers, weren't they? How did it get from The Tain and Dearg Doom to this soft-rock mush?

Someone disagrees with you so they must be drunk - nice logic!
I'm fully aware of their musical chops, hence my bemusement that they slummed it with bland tripe like this.

Good info, and every time I pop in here the song grows on me a bit. But it's STILL a far cry from their "Celtic Rock" roots.
