I'm also a long-time fan of these guys. Had all their stuff on LP, but I need to get it on CD. They choose wonderfully joyous, oddball tunes and play them with love and good energy. Just enough slightly off-pitch notes to make it quirky and homespun.
I have the utmost respect, admiration and affection for R Crumb. The art is brilliant and I've spent countless hours enjoying and even copying it. He's a brilliant social critic and thinker, generally, too.
Sorry, though, I stray from his assessment of nearly all things musical from the "Old Days" being vastly superior to almost all things since then. There's old crap and new crap. Old treasures and new treasures. I made a living for 35 years playing lots of styles .
Fabulous song that was done by Herman Kenin in 1927 - this version is different but nice. Check out the original - the music is on the video Driving Around New York City (Harold Lloyd Speedy film 1928)
I saw them live last night and they played this. Crumb of course is in France doing whatever the French do but the combo still does it's once a year gig at teh Fright and Salvage in Berkeley. Most excellent!
Good melody with a sprightly rhythm....foot tapping music. It has a blithe and happy spirit...but also a coloring of sadness...as if there is an awareness of the a passing of time in it, that these musicians know...and most of us forget.
Nice song! Is it a Crumb-composition or some sort of standard? And whats making that strange melodysound? It sounds like a combination of saw and theremin or ondes martenot, it seems unlikely that crumbs band would use synthesizers!
Not a theremin. You are hearing a baritone saw (Robert Armstrong) and a single string Stroh violin (Al Dodge), The Stroh violin is a horned stringed instrument with a most particular sing-song sound. I believe Al has one and four stringed Strohviols. The Suits love their toys.
24 years later lol! The concept of returning such strange and emotional relics is indeed one with potential Rightness to nudge the cosmos back in order.
Or some damned spot of tainted provenance that might be lightened by such determined
resolve as to post it, here.
I knowingly nicked a mutually cherished mix tapes from long time roommate/bestf. I had to as I could not part with it. Returned it few years later. I played it on his deck. He'd slap his thign! Damn love this song! lol
Not bad vocal from Robert on this number. The real deal.Almost the prototype for retro bands of the ninties, like Squirrel Nut Zippers, Sour Milk Porridge and Glass Metal Spiders Silver Band.
Thanks, R. A tasteful little ditty!

Sweet music. I taped a lot of my dad's 78 records to reel to reel tape when I was a kid so he could listen to them.
He didn't like vocal, only instrumental.
