Unusual song from Wings and unusual that I like it. Think its their first attempt with "electronics" Normally I hate synthesizer in songs, but maybe good musicians can do anything well?
I always thought the beginning of this song sounded like it was actually ending. I also never knew if they were saying with a little "luck" or with a little "love".
And here's something that I discovered just a few months ago: I had to turn up the volume on my CD player to hear it...but...there is a BASS LINE arpeggio type thingie in the DEEP BACKGROUND between 3:42 & 3:48. You might not be able to hear it in here (unless you can amplify the sound a little bit) but there is something there.
For a good number of songs that were recorded in the 1970's there was an air of sweetness and love and peace.
As I listen to some of these songs I think that the biggest factor in their success was the sweetnes of tones that were able to be produced in the synthesizers and effect boxes of those days.
Those instruments are still around but the magic in their voices is no longer in the abilities of current music makers.
Wow, this song brings me back to my Field Day May 1978 when I was in sixth grade! I love this song! It is so soothing...I want to go back to Spring '78...when the "Willow turns its back in inclement weather".
Life is Beautiful but the day's go by fast. With God's Love and Blessings, an equal measure of Faith and wisdom and A Little Luck we can all make as far as our dreams and hard work can carry us, keep on heading for the Light. Peace Koz07.
Linda was a photoghraper when she knew Paul, I wonder how she learn so fast to play a musical instrument or she already knew how? Rip such a beautiful person , always love her !!!
I thought this song was pretty good when it came out. But over the years it's become one of my very favorite McCartney songs. It's got a sweet mood of peace and harmony, and relentless optimism. I think it's one of his best. And since Paul is the most successful musician in history, that's saying something.
I was born in 1966, and as someone GLUED to the FM radio, I heard this all the time in those days, but I never really took to it, it's one of those FLASH BACK time machine tracks for sure. I'd basically forgotten about it but I do like it still
we're the same age, but I have more of a connection with this song. besides becoming a Beatlemaniac not too long after this one came out, there were a couple of times when this mellow, kinda moody one hit the spot.
@wrw6600 I'm more a Zep, Who and Stones fan, but this song REALLY does take me back to those days, just learning about all the music culture to that point in time, amazing, heady stuff!!
This was the first song of a different sounding Paul MCCartney. A lot of Wings & Beatles fans hated this style change by Paul McCartney. But these ignorant idiots forget that Steve Miller Band was doing to same thing to rock music with Threshold-Jet Airliner. People were catching onto Klaus Shultz and Jean Michel Jarre sound by the late 1970s. These same people forget the 1950s and early 1960s generation hated their mid 1960s to mid 1970s hard rock redneck hippy movement music sound.
Hey tiptop I'm with you I too wish i was akid again ...... Heady days aye an amazing time We never thought it would come to an end never saw it coming WOW They WERE the best Paul linda and Denny the founders of ""WINGS""
love this song..specially the synth..then the break..WOW!...takes me back to 1978 it was also my 1st year of high school age 13..Was this song played over the closing credits of a film titled 'Sunburn' released around 1980?.
@MrTevB Yes, it was. I remember flipping on the TV back in the late 80s/early 90s and the closing credits of Sunburn were on with this playing over them. At that point I hadn't heard this song in years. I always loved it as a little kid (it was #1 in the US on my 4th birthday), but it wasn't exactly a staple of radio playlists in the 80s and so I was happy to have it turn up.
I was feeling kind of heavy hearted today, and looking for an urgent way to stop myself from quickly falling into depression. I tried to think of half a dozen songs that might get myself into a better mood, and this was one of them...
Thanks for posting the original and better version of the classic song by Wings. It sure brings me back memories i just turned 13 then and my start of my ordinary but somewhat memorable teen years. And most of all It was no.1 in May,1978 one month after i turned 13.
Bless you for the longer version, in 79 i drove a 75 honda civic with no radio, we put one in with a cassette player, JOY!! i listened to this version on the Wings Greatest, I miss that tape, not so much the car, BLESS YOU TUBE!!!
This is a beautiful song. Paul is the greatest bass player ever, by far. Sure there are faster players, funkier players, whatever, but none with the musical genius that is McCartney.
@celticsarebest Yes it is celtics absolutely without a doubt!!!!!! "we can work it out" is the anthem of the unemployed and every American who gives a care!!!!
Paul and John were always trying to create what the Beach Boys were doing and both groups envied and greatly appreciated each others talents. Paul came as close to making pop magic here as anything he ever did as a Beatle. This song is glorious.
I have played so much LP *London Town* back in 1978. I think it has always been such an underrated PMC/Wings album! This song was also a big hit in Belgium, but I cannot remember if it was the short or the long version. Fantastic keyboards used for that time being.
Man,alive.I love THIS version better than the "shortened" version. And it's one of (if not) Paul's best work outside of the Beatles.Well, most songs when he was with Wings were just as good, too.
I don't remember the pitch variation being so harsh. They must have stretched the tapes something shocking. This was 77? 78? Musta been Macca's punk thread. Better than Old Siam Sir.
One of Sir Paul's most underrated songs. I remember this when it was no.1 on the charts in the States in the spring of '78 and a sophomore in high school. It remains one of my favorites...so many memories...man I wish I was a kid again!
@tiptop713 I have that same memory, just graduated High School though....I think it was March or April....so many memories with this one! Ram on, Joe.
Hey, buck, thanx for postin' the full album version. You're the man! Hit #1 pop, #5 AC in the US (Billboard). How'd it do in the UK? God bless! RIP, Lovely Linda.
@DaveWollenberg Hey Dave, I think it got to number 5 in the UK. This was the first single I ever remember being bought for Xmas as a kid, so has always been one of my favourite songs. Hugely under-rated track which rarely gets played in the UK.
@steelerdave2000 This is the version I remember from 1978 that played on Quad 104 WQUD Memphis. In the years after every station only played the short version.
I don't understand how anyone can dislike this song. This extended version is fantastic!
