BTW, I don't want 4wd to engage automatically. You lose steering with 4wd. Think about it: You're coming around a tight corner. Your tire slips so your Polaris engages 4wd, and you lose steering and face plant a tree. Great.
No problem. The Polaris AWD system uses an electrical sensor. Once the rear wheels spin, 1/5 of 1 revolution or 20% of a turn, it sends an electrical signal to front diff. There, a mechanical locker using a magnet locks the front diff. Once traction is regained, it disengages. It can lock and unlock many times in a difficult section. Plow through mud or snow? It won't disengage, so yes...steering is difficult...but you'd be stuck if it didn't. Hope that helps.

@figato It has elevtic power steering... so you control the steering. And YES you have to stop to turn on 4wd because if you dont you will shave your gears. it even says in the MANUAL for every quad you shouldnt have the back wheels spinning to switch. I have a polaris 500 and im getting a 550 i keep it in AWD all the time which switches it to automatic and Ive been drifting around corners and had it switch to 4wd and had nothing happen... so you should ride one before you hate on it.
@khower Well, I have respect for the Pol and like the Yammy, but watch my video "ATV Riding on Powerlines in Ashtabula, Ohio". While the polaris isn't there, there were 4 Yamahas all with lockers that weren't getting through what my Rancher was. Like I said, I don't put too much stock in the locker when it's being turned by a belt. Just my $.02 Wish I had a locker on the Honda either way.

All their 800 and 850's are twin cylinder...you're right. But the 550's are single. Some other brands at 700cc power have a single.
I have a RZR XP 900 LE too. I own Polaris ATV for 2 main reasons....the suspension and the 4WD. Both are amazing rock crawling. If I was a mud guy? I definitely wouldn't own them.
@khower I driven all 4 wheelers, even my friends razr 800. I had a honda rubicon 500 and now a yamaha grizzly 700 after traded the rubi in for it. My got irs and locker on it, the rubi didnt. If I hada chance to get another honda I would for to cruise, I got 27" super swamper truck tires mounted on 14" rims on my 4 wheeler. Good bike to move 200 lbs of tires and rims for a 700cc single cylinder
I know this is just an ad and you would have to show that the polaris is better or it would not make sense, but this really isnt a fair test and i know the grizzly 450 was the only one at the time but still didnt think it was that fair i would still take the grizzly 450 even tho the wheels on the polaris are pretty sweet, both are great quads tho. I have a grizzly 660 and a kawasaki lakota 300.

I've got a Sportsman 400 and a Grizzly 450. The Polaris is a smoother ride but the Grizzly will out climb it and get you in and out of tuff situations with alot less effort on the bikes part. I would say that the Polaris is a little easier to work on though.
I would love to see a different test know with the 2011 550's and one that is not sponsered by one of the atv's. This test is just stupid and pointless waist of time.

I think their new XP versions are much better than their older models, I still prefer yamaha's mechanical engine braking design though over an electronic type braking assist, simpler is always better. Also has Polaris done away with that awful single lever braking yet, as I much prefer having control over the front and rear brakes. I realize they have a foot pedal for the rear, but not sure if it's still just mechanical or hydraulic, or if you can ergonomically use it correctly.

Only reason the yamaha didn't win every round is because polaris is jealous of yamaha ! And polaris has more weight then the yamaha and u dont have to stop and all that jazz to put it in 4 wheeldrive diff lock and polaris has to lose traction before it gets traction.
Lose traction? Not really. The front locker is free spooled until the rear wheel slips 1/5 of 1 revolution. So if the rear tire loses traction for 20% of 1 turn, then the front diff automatically locks. You don't even notice.
first off there's a xp versus a normal quad. and like all companies there comparing there new model with a competitors old model. they didn't show the grizzly going threw mud or on trails. and yes it's going to have "16" more hp if its a 100 cc difference.
personally Polaris has shitty body's for there quads. and grizzly needs to make something other than mud vehicles, in y opinion the can-am brp would own both of them.

The DVD came out in October (at least when I saw it at my dealer)...So you figure it was filmed probably summer sometime...before the 2009 model Yamahas came out. Why not test machines that DIRECTLY compare, such as the Grizzly 550 or Arctic Cat 550?
What they DON'T tell you is that the Polaris is a good 150+ pounds more. This helps pull the sled further. That's a no-brainer.
But that excessive weight also hurts the Polaris on steep hills and it makes it sink faster in the soft stuff.
And I would rather lock the Grizzly in 4wd and diff lock myself BEFORE I need it, rather than hope the Polaris doesn't fail to engage while past the point of no return.
I didn't make the videos, nor do I work for Polaris. So I have no inside knowledge. HOWEVER, just do some common sense research. I got my copy of the DVD in Oct 08. So you know, it was released before that...based on the filming conditions..I'd say it was shot in the summer 08. The 09's used weren't even out yet to public. I guarantee, Yamaha isn't giving them pre-production bikes to test...so they can only test what's available, which would be 08 models.
@khower Polaris may have released their machines before Yamaha and the rest. However, it's still not exactly a fair comparison.
The only Sportsman XP 550 versus Grizzly 550 test I can find was done July of this year. Polaris MAY NOT have had a Grizzly 550 to test against in '08. BUT WHY DID THEY WAIT SO LONG, almost 2 YEARS after the Grizzly 550 came out? They waited a while after the Kingquad 500 and Arctic Cat 550 came out as well.
At least Yamaha videos compare roughly equivalent models.

I had honda atvs and polaris atvs and the Polaris is by far a better machine fro many reasons. I know that yamaha is a good machine as well as kawasaki but when you compare the ride, poweer, suspension, ground clearance and TRUE AUTOMATIC AWD then nothing else comes close. I just wish that Polaris would get rid of the CVT belt like Honda and add a sealed breaking system like Yamaha!

Yeah, I think sportsman has some advantages over the grizzly, but it also has more downsides. I'd take a grizzly over a sportsman but still. Both good quads that have more than enough to get you where you want.
I own a 09 Grizzly 450 and i can say that its no pile of junk. it has pulled every hill and trailer i've put it up too. I can say this i have a buddy with a sportsman 500 and we both climbed the same hill .he had he's in 4x4/low and struggled to climb a small hill. i climbed the same hill in 2x4 and my quad didn't even strain. just a fact. also his quad always has something wrong with it and he doesn't ride it as hard as i ride mine.
@mrselvie Ur friend probably does not use the quad properly then... i got an 500 sportsman 09 and its fucking awesome... an there is never a problem with it.. i have droven nearly 8000km in a bit over a year now..

I must say both Polaris and Yamaha i bad up here where I live - the plastic and the the axles don't last long when it's -45*C / -50*F in the winter, the batteries are dead gone, the tiers are so hard that if they flex they brake - I stay with my Snowmobile and my Arcticcat for shure.

I know this is just an ad and you would have to show that the polaris is better or it would not make sense, but this really isnt a fair test and i know the grizzly 450 was the only one at the time but still didnt think it was that fair i would still take the grizzly 450 even tho the wheels on the polaris are pretty sweet, both are great quads tho. I have a grizzly 660 and a kawasaki lakota 300.

I would rather prefer a Polaris Sportsman 800 twin for its true all wheel drive for I have tested a yamaha grizzly 450 and it feels stiffer than the polarized and one more thing how fast does a yamaha grizzly 450 ?????

I've got a Sportsman 400 and a Grizzly 450. The Polaris is a smoother ride but the Grizzly will out climb it and get you in and out of tuff situations with alot less effort on the bikes part. I would say that the Polaris is a little easier to work on though.

I think their new XP versions are much better than their older models, I still prefer yamaha's mechanical engine braking design though over an electronic type braking assist, simpler is always better. Also has Polaris done away with that awful single lever braking yet, as I much prefer having control over the front and rear brakes. I realize they have a foot pedal for the rear, but not sure if it's still just mechanical or hydraulic, or if you can ergonomically use it correctly.

you need to read some of the comments. This was filmed in mid-2008. The 550 didn't come out until 2009, so the 550 didn't exist when this was filmed.

Only reason the yamaha didn't win every round is because polaris is jealous of yamaha ! And polaris has more weight then the yamaha and u dont have to stop and all that jazz to put it in 4 wheeldrive diff lock and polaris has to lose traction before it gets traction.

Lose traction? Not really. The front locker is free spooled until the rear wheel slips 1/5 of 1 revolution. So if the rear tire loses traction for 20% of 1 turn, then the front diff automatically locks. You don't even notice.

first off there's a xp versus a normal quad. and like all companies there comparing there new model with a competitors old model. they didn't show the grizzly going threw mud or on trails. and yes it's going to have "16" more hp if its a 100 cc difference.
personally Polaris has shitty body's for there quads. and grizzly needs to make something other than mud vehicles, in y opinion the can-am brp would own both of them.

If you look at the 2011 test...the 550 Polaris beat the 550 Yamaha by only 2 bike lengths....so a lot different than this test.

I deleted your double post. Here's the deal. I don't know about the 550 vs 450. In 2008, did Yamaha have a Grizzly 550? I don't know. If they did in 2008, and the tested against the 450...yeah..that's lame.
As for the 850 vs 700. That's the point! They are pointing out, that Grizzly doesn't have anything bigger than that. Is it fair in a race or pull? Totally not...but again...that's the message of this ADVERTISEMENT. It's an ad. They all sway their ads/tests.

The 550 Grizzly came out in 2009, so the 450 was the closest comparison at the time. I didn't realize that vid was 2008, I have no sound at work, where I shouldn't be watching these anyway :-)

The DVD came out in October (at least when I saw it at my dealer)...So you figure it was filmed probably summer sometime...before the 2009 model Yamahas came out. I try to explain to people...it's an ad...take it for what it's worth. But they get so fired up over it.

@khower The 850 vs. 700 comparison is what irritates me. The companies business models are completely different. Yamaha does not produce big bores on a whim, and compare the unproven model against a model that does not exist.
I am critiquing their advertisement, not their product. Watch Yamaha add about On-command vs. On-demand 4x4. It states the truth, and lets the customer decide. I am not a Yamaha fanatic, I am a 4-wheeling MBA. I pay attention to ethics in advertising.

Why not test machines that DIRECTLY compare, such as the Grizzly 550 or Arctic Cat 550?
What they DON'T tell you is that the Polaris is a good 150+ pounds more. This helps pull the sled further. That's a no-brainer.
But that excessive weight also hurts the Polaris on steep hills and it makes it sink faster in the soft stuff.
And I would rather lock the Grizzly in 4wd and diff lock myself BEFORE I need it, rather than hope the Polaris doesn't fail to engage while past the point of no return.

@khower You are correct, there was no 550 in '08. No Yamaha 550, no Arctic Cat 550. NO POLARIS 550 EITHER.
ALL of the previously mentioned 550s were introduced as '09 models, INCLUDING the Sportsman 550 XP.
ALL were introduced in late '08 as '09 models. I did less than 3 minutes of research via internet search to verify that.
The Sportsman 550 was also compared to the Kingquad 450 despite the fact that Suzuki came out with the Kingquad 500 in '09.
So WHY did Polaris compare to older models?

I didn't make the videos, nor do I work for Polaris. So I have no inside knowledge. HOWEVER, just do some common sense research. I got my copy of the DVD in Oct 08. So you know, it was released before that...based on the filming conditions..I'd say it was shot in the summer 08. The 09's used weren't even out yet to public. I guarantee, Yamaha isn't giving them pre-production bikes to test...so they can only test what's available, which would be 08 models.

The only Sportsman XP 550 versus Grizzly 550 test I can find was done July of this year. Polaris MAY NOT have had a Grizzly 550 to test against in '08. BUT WHY DID THEY WAIT SO LONG, almost 2 YEARS after the Grizzly 550 came out? They waited a while after the Kingquad 500 and Arctic Cat 550 came out as well.
At least Yamaha videos compare roughly equivalent models.

I had honda atvs and polaris atvs and the Polaris is by far a better machine fro many reasons. I know that yamaha is a good machine as well as kawasaki but when you compare the ride, poweer, suspension, ground clearance and TRUE AUTOMATIC AWD then nothing else comes close. I just wish that Polaris would get rid of the CVT belt like Honda and add a sealed breaking system like Yamaha!

Yeah, I think sportsman has some advantages over the grizzly, but it also has more downsides. I'd take a grizzly over a sportsman but still. Both good quads that have more than enough to get you where you want.

I own a 09 Grizzly 450 and i can say that its no pile of junk. it has pulled every hill and trailer i've put it up too. I can say this i have a buddy with a sportsman 500 and we both climbed the same hill .he had he's in 4x4/low and struggled to climb a small hill. i climbed the same hill in 2x4 and my quad didn't even strain. just a fact. also his quad always has something wrong with it and he doesn't ride it as hard as i ride mine.

I must say both Polaris and Yamaha i bad up here where I live - the plastic and the the axles don't last long when it's -45*C / -50*F in the winter, the batteries are dead gone, the tiers are so hard that if they flex they brake - I stay with my Snowmobile and my Arcticcat for shure.
