Rio de Janeiro. I´m 1 engineer due to the that I saw and I idolized in the it serializes old. the hope in the humanity in the search of new borders of the knowledge. I went by the new generation and I stayed faithful. Oh vein enterprise and the the end. I was sad for knowing that Gene Roddenberry's fire was turned off. The film of 2009 was hideous when destroying 1 icon of the hope. I will never again see the such continuation. Gene would not let to happen to distort the saga.
This movie sucked. It would of work if they had fixed the time line. This is just a slap in the face of star trek fans everywhere. These idiots they interviewed have no clue about star trek. They should of interviewed some real star trek fans. But, I doubt any of them would wasted the money to go see this bad joke in the star trek legacy. Gene Must be rolling over in his grave. Thanks Paramount; you finally managed to kill off the greatest tv/movie franchise in history.

@loner1878 Star Trek(XI aka09) in 400 characters or less...Bad guy comes from the future seeking revenge on events that have not happened. Hoodlum Kirk gets on board the enterprise. Vulcans say: “We have no emotions...You Humans are STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!” Punk ass Kirk gets command by fighting with superior officers and forcing them to obey him. Kirk's ill conceived plan to defeat the bad guy miraculously works and everyone forgets his uncouth behavior and gives him command of their flag ship.
Everyone will have their own views and taste's on this one, just like with modern art, most people think it's a load of nonsense for artists that can't paint, and some people think it's the smartest thing in the world, even if it's a wooden box in the corner lol, as far as I'am concerned originality died thousands of years ago. What new today is old tomorrow and whats new tomorrow will be older still.
No One can ever out do Shatner & Nimoy as Kirk & Spock, but Pine & Quinto nailed their roles !!! Great Work Guys !!! I think I am slowly mutating into a Trekkee
The problem is not with the movie. Its with the annoying peice of shite called a 'reboot' that keeps happening in the 2000's. How many reboots does Hulk need? Spiderman getting a reboot? WHY? The pissing thing did record figures! Hollywood, why dont you grow some god damn bollocks back and start making some bloody original material. Star Trek= action, safe, good for da kids, HEY LETS REMAKE IT!!!!!!! What next? REMAKE GODFATHER WITH SOME STREET SLANG IN IT TOO YALL! YOU KNOW, FOR DA KIDS!!!!!!
The only person who can truly say whether or not this Star Trek is faithful to Gene Roddenberry's vision is of course Gene Roddenberry. But since he died 48 hours after screening Star Trek 6.....
But his son and his late widow knew him the best, and I don't think they believe that this movie destroyed Star Trek at its core. In fact, the impression I get is that it brought Star Trek back.
Its a good movie, its not a very good star trek movie though. I watched this and then first contact right after, First Contact is a good star trek movie.
The biggest thing that bugged me SO much, was the Spock/Uhura thing going on! I mean, I kinda wish that they somehow snuck on Nurse Chapel if they wanted a Spock relationship going on, but that is just me being partial to the Original Series. :) After watching it again, I was actually pretty pleased with it.
@TheStarTrekChick If Nurse Chapel wasn't really affected by the changes in the time line, then she may still be clinging on to the hope of Roger Korby, the love of her life, is still alive.
i'm a trekkie and i loved this movie, i liked the fact that they tried to go in a different direction with it. guess it's just preferences though *shrugs*
I really dont know what the problem was with this film, i loved every minute of it and i love the new cast, well still not keen on Simon Pegg as scotty but never mind. And dont get me wrong iam a huge star trek fan and i love TOS. I think the biggest thing people dont like about the film is the change, Vulcan is destroyed and Kirk is a bit of a rouge, but lets face it Star Trek was getting a bit past it before this film came out, Nemesis was a big let down for me.
@Wharding85 "I really don’t know what the problem was with this film" You did not notice that the villain never bothered to give his advanced tech to his home world, or Kirk is now a criminal who gets the flagship without even graduating from the academy, or the ridicules magical powers of Red Mater, or the fact that the movie had no point to it? The fact that audiences now want over the top “Flash! Bang!” is why people like you are saying “Star Trek was getting a bit past”.
@Trekfreek And you complain about Nero being 2 dimensional? Did you learn anything from Star Trek? Not this movie, but the legacy. Did you even understand the First Contact or Wrath of Khan's references to Moby Dick? How easily men can be so blinded by hate and desire for vengeance? Um, it was only about as obvious as a red light. You claim to know Star Trek better than anybody, and how often do you prove yourself wrong?
Sure, it wasn't hardcore, but a guilty pleasure at the least. At the most, it was certainly better than nothing..........which was the other option considering how bad things were getting with the franchise. At worse, you should be thankful that many enjoyed it so you will have Star Trek around to scrutinize for years to come still
The Wrath of Khan had plenty of emotion and touched our spirits, with the search for spock, best films ever but this new one was great, everything has to evolve and change, the original cast are old or dead, and Genes been beamed up by God so the Adventure Continues.
The actors that played Spock and McCoy did an excellent, convincing job. Sadly, the other actors fell far short but even worse was the radical change in the historical story line that strayed far from the original series.
@McMahonHater Ummm Leonard Nimoy was in it. I do hope you forgot that fact when you made your comment. LOL
I agree, though. Karl Urban was amazing. He got his role perfect.
I also think, if they *Must* recast, they couldn't have done better than Zachary Quinto as Spock. There are times when he does not look not like Mr. Nimoy's Spock.
@StoneKnivesBearskins I think Nimoy did it for a payday. Not that he needs the money, but hell it's money so why not take it. Also I haven't heard anything from him about what he thought of the finnished film, for all I know he may not have realized how bad it was when he was making it.
these "fans" were probably payed do say this ? no hardcore fan would think this was a good star trek film, it was an entertaining film but not a good star trek film.
like, it was all good at the movie theatre after smoking a joint, with the effects and space n shit (obviously) it was like a ride.
but the beginning started out as a typical hollywood movie which is a total turn off for me. the new Spock did a great job I think but the new kirk was pretty painful to watch. way too cheesy (in a boring way)
If there were a new godfather film to come out, you would not want the main character to be a teen idol
Boy, there's a lot of people here being angry and disagreeing with each other! Peace guys, Gene Roddenberry envisioned a future in which mankind wouldn't have this kind of silly conflicts anymore! If you'll maintain this attitude, the vulcans may never come to invite us to join the federation...
You have to break eggs to make a cake that these non-Trekkie fans will like because that box office number is KING....well it's a damn TYRANT!!!
The newbies are not going to like 79 year olds in key roles only in supporting as Nimoy so adeptly showed in the film! (He is an awesome man anyway). This youth oriented society finds 30 year old to be old.
They don't want to learn anything (that's for school) as they think they already know it all already.
The reason people like the New Movie is because it was a good action movie in & of itself. It gave back story and allowed many newbies to enter the world of Star Trek with a younger cast & crew. When they re-do it they may put in the teen years... who knows?
The reason why many (not all) Trekkies didn't like it is because it negates the original timeline or rather it follows a whole new time line and eliminates Vulcans, Romulans, Amanda, and the lessons learned from TOS.
The Trekkies are people who LOVE the Original Series with Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley as Kirk, Spock and McCoy.
Trekkers are in their early 30's on down to about their mid-20's who loved the Next Generation and the other knock-offs of TOS.
I enjoyed the movie as a film in & of itself. However, it didn't capture the true essence of TOS. The time lines were off. Checkov is supposed to be about 14 years younger than Kirk. Kirk served aboard the Farragut in TOS.
"JJ Abrams' Star Trek" was the biggest, lens flare filled, badly filmed, steaming pile of shit to come out of Hollywood in a long time. Abrams needs to stick to producing TV and leave directing feature films to the big boys. Writers Kurtzman and Orci should leave Tinsletown forever!
Abrams made his own Star Wars film using Gene Roddenberry's characters.
It sucked Ferengi balls!
This "movie" was a bad sci-fi film that simply contained elements of Star Trek. That's where the similarities end.
Sorry I am not buying into Bizzaro Trek, it's just not my cup of tea. Even the worst of Trek in the past is was far superior to this mess. If you like it, that's great. I don't like the fact that the story was dumbed down, the action scenes were way too reminscent of Star Wars and there was no continuity whatsoever.
i never cared for star trek but ppl tell me to go see this if im a sci fi fan wich i am . i remember the first 3 original films as a kid so should i rent it if im not a big watcher of the tv shows?
1:39 "I have now converted to a Trekkie..." What a joke. If all you've seen is the new movie, then you know nothing about Star Trek, and you are NOT a Trekkie. Liking the new movie doesn't make you a Trekkie any more than watching Braveheart makes you a history major.
@fecxor What's Braveheart? Am I someone who Must have been living in a cave all her life because she did Not know what it is?
I do agree with your comment, though.
Still, I'll admit, that even though I became a Trekkie/Trekker because of WOK, I saw this a few months later, even before being able to see the TV series (hadn't had the money yet) and it made me love Star Trek even more, though mostly because Mr. Nimoy was in it. LOL
@StoneKnivesBearskins You never even heard of "Braveheart"? Braveheart is the second best movie Mel Gibson ever made. The best of one was "The Passion of the Christ".
Look, to be a fan of this movie is to be a fan of the spiderman trilogy or the dark knight or something, lots of people like run of the mill action films, and they are good films, but star trek itself is an entirely unique entity; and that is what being a fan is- you have to respect the REAL star trek to be a trekkie.
@TheJunglesound meaning that this new film is not star trek, its just an action film which has similar costumes and character names. Its good but it can never gain a large cult following; jus as all big-budget action films never can.
@TheJunglesound meaning that this new film is not star trek, its just an action film which has similar costumes and character names. Its good but it can never gain a large cult following; jus as all big-budget action films never can.
There was no way that this movie, and it's "Red Matter", fly into a black hole, alternate reality BS make for a better movie than the Dark Knight. That is such crap. Just on it's own merits, the plot made zero sense and it just blew as a movie, and comparing it to other titles makes it painfully clear how it sucks.
And when you compare it to REAL Trek, Nemesis and First Contact were better films in every way. To say nothing of the original ST movies, Khan of course being the best of those.
@NiggerJesusGodDammit Burn in hell, you little faggot scumbag piece of shit. I hope you and all your trash trailer park family get raped and murdered within the next few days. No matter what gender or age I want screaming children and a lot of blood, fukwad.

Further, how can you say someone who just came out of the theater and says "I'm definitely a new fan now" is a Trekkie? You just grabbed anyone you saw coming out of the theater and asked them what they thought, without finding out if they'd ever even watched Star Trek before. The name of this video is wrong.
The host calls it "Star Track", just like all the assholes who like this movie. "Best one ever", says the guy who's probably never watched The Wrath of Khan. The best thing I can say about this stinkburger is that it's not Nemesis.
Actually "Nemesis" was better by a hair. At least it made you think and the villain was born crazy and way smarter then Nero. Nero did have one good quality he was named after a Disney alligator in "The Rescuers" I kept expecting his first officer to be named Brutice and Madam Medusa to storm in.
"Nemesis" did NOT make me think. I'm pretty sure my mind went completely blank. I remember a dune buggy chase, and Data getting killed. Other than that, I have no memory of that film.
Really? You did not think about how your life might have changed if you took another path? It did not remind you that youre not your closest relative? You did not learn that what makes us different is not our experiences but our souls? That is what I came away with after watching "Nemesis". But this new movie nothing, nada, zip, zero. That's not entirely true I did get one thing out of it...Nausea from all the camera shakes and lens flares.
@villainsdeeds And here is someone who has seen the Wrath of Khan, and still loved this new incarnation of Star Trek. And there are plenty of Trekkies who liked or loved this movie and recognized it as Star Trek as the Star Trek's that came before it.
@Potrimpo You might have seen The Wrath of Kahn but i bet you have no idea what it was about. You probably think it's about revenge, and you would be wrong. Star trek is not about revenge or pointless action. It's about issues concerning today’s world. What was this movie about? The economy? Terrorists? Small dictators with nuclear power? Corruption of the constitution? No, none of these things. It was a mindless introduction of bizarro Star Trek.
@BondFreek And once again, not only you lost the bet, you only proved yourself wrong yet again. Khan was on a quest for vengeance, and that was only obvious. Picard was on the same quest on First Contact, also a variation of Moby Dick, and the episode Arena where Kirk was on a quest of vengeance when Cestus 3 was destroyed by the Gorn believing it was a preemptive strike.
@Potrimpo Once again you missed the point of The Wrath of Kahn. Was Kahn out for vengeance? Yes. Was that the point of the movie? NO. You, and other like you, ignore the Geniuses debate of the film. Geniuses was not just a plot device, it was the whole point of the movie. You are the one that has been proven wrong, you are just too stubborn to admit it.
@BondFreek 100% wrong, AGAIN!!! Genesis was developed to add tension to the film, according to the WRITERS!!! And according to the director Nicholas Meyer, the Genesis device was originally suppose to be a bomb that destroys everything. But he nixed that idea because he believed that the Federation would never build such a weapon. So he read an article on terraforming, changing an inhospitable planet into a living, breathing planet. And thus the legend of Genesis of Star Trek.
@BondFreek Plus, dipshit, why wasn't it called Star Trek: Genesis if the plot was about Genesis? Because it was called Wrath of Khan because it was about the wrath of Khan. As shown in the movie, which is supported by Terrell telling Kirk that Khan blames him for the death of his wife, quoting Captain Ahab, oh yeah and the Klingon Proverb that bears a striking resemblance to a line from Les liaisons dangereuses.
And Kirk's midlife crisis also played a pivotal role as well.
@Potrimpo Would you go see a movie called Genesis after a string of movies about the origins of man had just came out? Movies like Hanger 18, and Chariots of the Gods. You see kid I lived through 95% of the Star Trek era. I was one of the thousand kids who wrote NASA asking them to name the first Space Shuttle Enterprise. I watched the animated series when it first aired and I seen the first 10 movies when they first came out. I know more about trek then you because I lived through it.
@BondFreek And all that, and you still don't know a fucking thing about Star Trek. You keep claiming Star Trek is about ideas and morals, which were made painfully obvious in this movie.
My god, I am still laughing over you saying that Wrath of Khan wasn't about vengeance. You ignored the fact that Wrath of Khan was originally called Revenge of Khan. But changed it when Return of the Jedi was going to be called Revenge of the Jedi.
@Potrimpo. Titals have little to do with what the moral of the show is about. Take "Wink of an eye" is that about an eye winking? no Moving faster than a eye wink? No. It was about sex, and survival. How about "The Final Frontier" was that about a new dimension? a colonization? No it was about what makes us human.
This movie had no morals just sex, violince and the Story of Luke Skywalker.
@BondFreek And just because you say you were there from the beginning doesn't mean a damned thing. If that claim were even plausible, then NO ONE could ever appreciate William Shakespeare, Edger Allan Poe, Mark Twain, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
If what you claim is true, how is it that many kids under 18 still appreciate Dr. Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, and of course 2001.
If you are right, then they should turn their noses up at the Wizard of Oz.
@Potrimpo. They don't, not the way we did. We knew that Dr. Strange love was a parady of another nucler bomb movie and apolitical statement. To day they only see the politics. They don't get the jokes. 2001 they sleep through and don't get the underline measage.
@BondFreek And one thing you so-called fans failed to comprehend that is as much a part of Star Trek as is warp drive, the IDIC.
What makes it worse is that every time you argue against this movie, your argument says that this movie is as much Star Trek as the ones that came before it.
@Potrimpo. Give it up you havenothing but giberish not one single shread of proof that thisis a good movie and is a good adition to Star Trek. You lost again.
@BondFreek When the began developing Wrath of Khan, Nicholas Meyer began by reviewing the original series, and he spotted Space Seed. And there is a great villain to bring back. Bringing him back for a quest of vengeance for Kirk marooning him on Ceti Alpha 5. And this is Nick Meyer, not me. And not anyone who disagrees with you.
@BondFreek Funny how millions can be so wrong about Star Trek 2, including the writers and the director, plus the cast, and yet only one can be right. Or in reality, YOU are wrong.
Goodbye, and go troll someplace else where you are not being laughed at. Douche.
@Potrimpo. How many Geniuses are in the world? How many rich people, Collage graduates, literate people? The smart people are always outnumbered by the uneducated. You seem to me to be quite educated but lack focus. Real Star Trek is about ideas. Harve Benet used Khan as a spring board for his story, but he knew fans needed a moral plot so he came up with Genesis. The initial idea of a story is rarely the final main point of the story.
@BondFreek Actually Albert Einstein had problems with math in the beginning. And I have seen educated people, like Doctors, who are clueless as to how to use a DVD player.
Weak argument once again.
Oh, and the moral plot for Khan, Vengeance. Something you still say Khan isn't about.
And you are 100% wrong. YOUR source said that Genesis was suppose to be something to raise the stakes between the conflict between Kirk and Khan.
@BondFreek And by the way, Mr. Fubar, if I don't reply at what you laughingly call an argument, it's because I have better things to do than to argue, and win, with a piece of bullshit like you.
@BondFreek And back onto Star Trek 11, let me see now. A movie about an alternative origins of James T. Kirk and Spock, adding in the fuel about a vengeful Romulan who is out to hurt Spock and to share his pain with everyone.
Here's an idea, a Romulan goes back in time by mistake and changes history, which includes the destruction of Vulcan.
Morals? I take it the whole thing about the Vulcan bullies seems to go right over your head.
@Potrimpo. Romulans are from the same history os Vulcans. It is ilogical to take revenge on some one who has not wronged you. Spock did not wrong him. Dumb plot point not Star Trek at all. That's Star Wars junk; he even looks loke a sith.
The bully sceen was originaly in the animated series but done better. The Vulcan kids only said "Your a tran Spock you will never be a true vulcan" " your father brought discrase to vulcan by marring a human." No hate words,no human expressions like "Whore".
@BondFreek Plus just like you and may other proven wrong critics, there were other themes in this film. Racism, especially with the Vulcan bullies taunting Spock because he's half human. A carryover from Journey to Babel. And it didn't help when the Vulcan councel mentioned Spock's disadvantage, namely his human mother.
And it was about how the crew of the USS Enterprise came together in an alternate timeline. A plot.
@Potrimpo Was Spock picked on in school? Yes. Did the other kids use human insults like “whore”? No. They only constantly told Spock that he was not really Vulcan. Watch the episode Journey to Babel again. Amanda: “because the other children said you are not really Vulcan.”
@BondFreek And once again you are proven wrong. Simply because she did not specify how they tormented him. TORMENTED him. Which can include calling his mother a whore. Rewatch the episode again. Perhaps watching it may help.
@BondFreek What it comes down to is this. You do not know Star Trek. Your knowledge is laughable and your arguments are pitiful. Star Trek doesn't support your arguments, if anything they prove the exact opposite.
So instead of being an insult to Trekkies around the world, go away and never come back. You lost before, you lost now. And you will continue to lose. So what's the point of keeping up this charade of you knowing Star Trek better than anyone else? When the opposite is proven?
@BondFreek And in the end, you only do one thing you will always prove. When it comes to Star Trek, your knowledge and wisdom of Star Trek is laughable at best. And you just proved that when you said Khan wasn't about vengeance.
Admit it, you know shit better than Trek. Even when you deny it and say that's me, you only prove me and your adversaries right again.
@Potrimpo. I have the same sources, plus the extra DVD on the Directors Edition of Star Trek II. PS: it's Star Trek II not 2. (Sorry, I “nerded” out there for a moment)
@BondFreek For it to be a classic, it doesn't matter when someone watches it. And it sure doesn't matter whether or not they were even born when it came out. It's immortal, being able to live through the decades just as enticing as when they first came out.
Does Kill A Mockingbird ring a bell? Or even Star Trek?
@villainsdeeds One of my friends says Star Track. I'm forever Vulcan neck-pinching her for it. LOL. She likes TNG better, but isn't much of a fan. :( I'm trying to convert her. Wish me luck.
it was trek for jocks. too vin too diesel in a space ship. self destructive boozing looking for salvation between women's legs, joins the military as his brilliant solution..
please. all the high minded idealism and intellectual advanture of dawson's creek.
Agreed. In the REAL Trek, Kirk wasn't such a psychopath, gleefully killing his enemies after the conflict had ended. In fact, the REAL Kirk at first tried to save Kruge even though he'd just had Kirk's son killed for no reason. What happened to a Starfeelt officer's sense of honour?
It makes just as much sense as a cadet who hasn't even graduated yet being given the rank of captain after the whole Nero ordeal. Or as much sense as Red Matter being both a black hole sucker and a time traveling agent. You know what this film hurts my brain. It had pretty lights...
Yeah, but he did so quite begrudgingly, not because he felt it was the right thing to do. Perhaps you didn't notice that, but it was one of the worst things about the new Trek.
Well, he was quick to make the offer of compassion, even annoying Spock in doing so (perhaps that could be out-of-character on Spock's part but given what he had just been through, I don't blame him, even as a half-Vulcan). He was more than happy to let the enemy die at his own request, though, which was a scene I actually liked because I found it relateable. The movie did an outstanding job being much more loyal to the franchise than it had to, but I wish it was more philosophical (cont.)
(cont.), with more ideas mixed with the action. The enemy was contrived, the time travel plot wasn't creative for Star Trek (as critics seemed to claim it was); throughout the entire movie I didn't get the slightest feeling that "exploration" was even a part of their overall mission, so the Leanord Nimoy ending felt forced and out-of-place. But I feel that Abrams' balancing act was a difficult one that he executed very well given the diverse audiences. Don't get me started with "I, Robot"...
And it's not like he just let the bad guys die due to shitty circumstances; he just gave the order and they blew the fucking shit out of Nero's starship. Ummm... Starfleet doesn't do that. Heck, the Borg don't even do that. There are a few other little pissoffs here and there, like calling Klingon Battle Cruisers "Warbirds", and whatever the heck they called the Seti Eel in this version, and the fact that the timeline change was retroactive, so that Jim's older brother, is nonexistent.
Greatest incarnation of Star Trek ever. All the tripe (I use that term to be kind) that came before is nothing to Abrams genius! I know you like the old stuff with the stiff acting and humor so dry you'd need lotion, but those days are gone for good, besides hardcore fans. After time there will be a new breed of fans who will say they've 'heard of the old shows' but are devoted to the new (and ONLY new) incarnation. Besides, the new guys do a way better job
@GLCorps2 fuck off who are you to judge who does a better job? Have u watched real star trek? Look, to be a fan of this movie is to be a fan of the spiderman trilogy or the dark knight or something, lots of people like run of the mill action films, and they are good films, but star trek itself is an entirely unique entity; and that is what being a fan is- you have to respect the REAL star trek to be a trekkie.
It's fine to hate the film, but saying 'this isn't star trek!! It sucks!!' is a harsh conclusion to come to. No it's not like the original, JJ and the actors gave said numerous times that this is a reboot and different! This is aimed for a different audience, and you trekkies have your box sets ;)
No it isn't Star Trek and it sucks. Star Trek has always been a social commentary, characters, morals, and dilemias. It was designed to get people to think what the future might be like.
This was just mindless action. Cheesy one-liners, cliche situations, zero plot, and senseless motivations, and a lot of explosions.
Calling it Star Trek or a reboot is bull. It is just one of a hundred senseless action movies using a few character names in order to cash-in on an existing market.
However, its action and dialog was not mindless. They advanced the plot, rather than just being there for cheap laughs, corny scenes, and stupid actions taken by characters to setup more mindless scenes.
Sure. Great example. Despite the 1960s simplicity... the fight wasn't about the action. It was about the underlying issues of territory rights, looking at the other side, ways to solve disputes, compassion, mercy, etc. Kirk grew as a character in that. A reference to the cold war.
In this movie, most of the action was mindless. The same result would have happened without most of the scenes. What purpose did McKoy injecting Kirk or materializing in the water tube have other than slapsick?
Jeez, the number of negative votes for critical postings just boggles the mind. But then again, some Trekkers don't take criticism too kindly... (Phasers at dawn!)
I think if you use your imagination, you can hear the thoughts of the crew, thoughts that could have been heard if they added 'crew thought option' on the DVD menu - just like subtitles. I can imagine what Spock was thinking when he kissed Uhuru. ' I can appreciate your sympathy Uhuru, but I must complete my priorities before I can come to you for dinner.'
This movie had none of the moral, philosophical or scientific debates that were always so central to the core of Star Trek. It featured the icons from the original show (the ship, the uniforms, the Orions, etc.) but offered nothing thought-provoking. The original Trek pilot was deemed too cerebral for the TV networks, but this new movie won't ever be in danger of being called that.
A friend of mine and I talked about this movie recently and I came to an interesting conclusion. What is so different from the rest when it comes to Star Trek XI. I can find only two things (the sets and the characters). The pacing is on par with VI and Nemesis and the plot and subplots are no different than the rest. What are people liking that they hated before? Personally I thought the movie fun, but never reaching it's potential. 3 out of 5 stars.
Being a fan of the original series, I can say that, it was the best Trek movie thus far.
I'm glad that the original cast has been revived. Each spin-off series just got progressively worse and worse. The Next Gen was tolerable, while Deep Space Nine was unwatchable garbage. Voyager and Enterprise, I didn't even bother with. The writers got more PC by he day and one needed a barf bag to appreciate them.
Good job JJ - thanks for keeping it real - Keep 'em coming!
Interesting. I thought this new installment was Star Trek in name only. It certainly had nothing on 2 or 4 for story, 1 or 3 for imerssion, or 8 for effects and directing. Throughout the entire movie there is a mysterious alien manifesting as a lense flare attacking everyones' faces.
The lowest point in this movie and the Star Trek saga has got to be at the start when a ship actually flies out of a plot hole.
I really liked the movie, even after watching it a second time (proof enough).
But it reminded me more of the Starship Troopers movie than the Star Trek series. Nothing wrong with a few Holywood action movies as long as they resurrect the series. If not, then I'll just watch Voyager for the 4'th time.
Hahahaha! Would you've proffered all the space shots to be done with models and wires? With cheap obviously small scale explosions? Or any alien creatures that were in it to be people in bad cotton costumes? You're an idiot haha!
@bellerophon602, Agreed. I'm a Star Trek veteran fan. They killed Star Trek. The Star Trek I loved it dead. All I can do now is watch TNG, DS9, VOY, and play all of the Starfleet Command and Armada games. This new movie lacked everything that I loved about Star Trek, and had a lot of bad one liners, bad acting, and a lot of inconsistencies. Romulans are supposed to look like Vulcans. Starships are made in spacedocks, not on Earth. They killed Uhura, Spock and Kirk's characters. Scotty was ok.
Good god! There had to have been at least one person in the audience who didn't think it was THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER CREATED!
Personally, I think that as a sci-fi movie in general it was pretty kick-ass. As a Star Trek movie however it was alright. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best Star Trek movie of all time either. These review clips I've been watching are just pissing me off. It's either BEST MOVIE EVER or WORST MOVIE EVER. Where are the IT WAS ADEQUATE reviews?
I'm tired of the hacks in Hollywood, raping classic properties, i.e.- Transformers/ G.i. Joe/ Terminator. Its all new to the kids, so its no surprise they might like the flashy fireworks. But I have to say, I'm more than disappointing in "Trekkies" who should know better. But then again, have you ever met a "Trekkie"? Some are so pathetic, that they are willing to grab onto this shiny turd. Whats next? Remaking Back to the Future? Indian Jones? Friday the ... oh yeah. The original Star Wars!
Did you actually see the movie? What part of it didn't you like specifically?
Personally, I think there's nothing wrong with re-telling a story if you can add something new and original to it. Robin Hood is the oldest story in the english language and it has been changed many times before it become the Robin Hood we all know.
Not everything in a 'classic' is timeless. People's and society's values change all the time, even if older people want to be conservative. Imitation is a compliment
Your point is contradictory. Re-telling is neither new nor promotes originality. It is the opposite of originality. Robin Hood is literary character. The Star Trek characters were brought to life/fame by the actors, as much as the writer/creator. The endearment for the characters is mainly BECAUSE of the actors. These new actors, can bring an ounce of the charm that the original actors did. Its pointless to try. But when money is the goal... you know the rest. Pure candy coated trash.
oops, I meant, "... These new actors CAN'T bring an ounce of charm to the characters that the original actors created." I wouldn't have a problem with creating NEW Star Trek characters/stories! THAT would be original. That would be EXPLORING STRANGE NEW WORLDS..NEW CIVILIZATIONS... BOLDLY GOING WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE..". But no, these new filmmakers aren't capable of doing that. Thats why they desperately clasp to earlier creations, with built in fan bases, to bank off of.
JJ Abrams did a good job of introducing new fans to a dying franchise, but, what about the orignal fans? Was an entertaining film but is was not star trek, like the star was prequals were not star wars. And DONT BRING BACK KHAN for the next film, classics should stay classics.
Loved the movie, the action scenes, the storyline of the future of human history being changed by Spock going back in time. Just Uhura being in love with Spock was kind of wack. Other than than, the movie was quite good!
This movie was so good that I could have left the movie after the opening sequence. That was way too much for me to handle. I had not seen a movie this good in years. I saw it in Japan and usually people dont cheer in movies. I was the only one cheering after the opening sequence and i didnt care.
This movie is awesome!

Why was Scotty with that green alien thing?
Why did Prime Spock conveniently know where Scotty was?
Why was Kirk an assehole?
Why did Spocks mum die so early?
Why was nurse Chapel heard but never seen?
Why do Kirk AND Spock have a thing for Uhura?
Why was McCoy immitating himself?
Why was Nero being an assehole?
and Why did Prime Spock have that red matter?
...it just don't make no sense -_-

Wharding85 1 year ago
@Wharding85 "I really don’t know what the problem was with this film" You did not notice that the villain never bothered to give his advanced tech to his home world, or Kirk is now a criminal who gets the flagship without even graduating from the academy, or the ridicules magical powers of Red Mater, or the fact that the movie had no point to it? The fact that audiences now want over the top “Flash! Bang!” is why people like you are saying “Star Trek was getting a bit past”.
Trekfreek 1 year ago
@Trekfreek And you complain about Nero being 2 dimensional? Did you learn anything from Star Trek? Not this movie, but the legacy. Did you even understand the First Contact or Wrath of Khan's references to Moby Dick? How easily men can be so blinded by hate and desire for vengeance? Um, it was only about as obvious as a red light. You claim to know Star Trek better than anybody, and how often do you prove yourself wrong?
Potrimpo 1 year ago
I think what really made it bad were the special effects...FLARES!!!!!
If you think about it, the story was interesting, even though parts of it were ridiculous. JJ Abrams was just a bad director.
I'm sure if it was directed by Mr. Nimoy, nobody would have complained. LOL
JK. Some people would have complained about replacing the originals, and I am one of them, but they wouldn't be complaining about much else. LOL

StoneKnivesBearskins 1 year ago
@StoneKnivesBearskins I think Nimoy did it for a payday. Not that he needs the money, but hell it's money so why not take it. Also I haven't heard anything from him about what he thought of the finnished film, for all I know he may not have realized how bad it was when he was making it.

I have to agree with the trek fans on this one
like, it was all good at the movie theatre after smoking a joint, with the effects and space n shit (obviously) it was like a ride.
but the beginning started out as a typical hollywood movie which is a total turn off for me. the new Spock did a great job I think but the new kirk was pretty painful to watch. way too cheesy (in a boring way)

2 - The man who would be exiled from starfleet turns into captain in one day
3 - They jump from ship to planet and do not burn entering atmosphere
4 - Parachutes returning to bags after used - Unbelieveble !
5 - Nero spend 25 Years on 23rd century and did nothing !

They don't want to learn anything (that's for school) as they think they already know it all already.
crazycoolone 1 year ago
The reason people like the New Movie is because it was a good action movie in & of itself. It gave back story and allowed many newbies to enter the world of Star Trek with a younger cast & crew. When they re-do it they may put in the teen years... who knows?
The reason why many (not all) Trekkies didn't like it is because it negates the original timeline or rather it follows a whole new time line and eliminates Vulcans, Romulans, Amanda, and the lessons learned from TOS.
crazycoolone 1 year ago
The Trekkies are people who LOVE the Original Series with Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley as Kirk, Spock and McCoy.
Trekkers are in their early 30's on down to about their mid-20's who loved the Next Generation and the other knock-offs of TOS.
I enjoyed the movie as a film in & of itself. However, it didn't capture the true essence of TOS. The time lines were off. Checkov is supposed to be about 14 years younger than Kirk. Kirk served aboard the Farragut in TOS.
crazycoolone 1 year ago
@crazycoolone
Many of the lessons learned in TOS are lost to these guys.
All the enemies they defeated now exist in this time line.
"The City on the Edge of Tomorrow" and other classic episodes never happened in this time line.
Pine didn't channel Shatner's Kirk. He went out of his way not to even look at Shatner's work as it is deemed campy today.
I like some of the risks like Spock & his love interest in the film.
TOS INSPIRED many to become scientists & linguists and leaders.

The host calls it "Star Track", just like all the assholes who like this movie. "Best one ever", says the guy who's probably never watched The Wrath of Khan. The best thing I can say about this stinkburger is that it's not Nemesis.
villainsdeeds 2 years ago 18
Actually "Nemesis" was better by a hair. At least it made you think and the villain was born crazy and way smarter then Nero. Nero did have one good quality he was named after a Disney alligator in "The Rescuers" I kept expecting his first officer to be named Brutice and Madam Medusa to storm in.
BondFreek 1 year ago
"Nemesis" did NOT make me think. I'm pretty sure my mind went completely blank. I remember a dune buggy chase, and Data getting killed. Other than that, I have no memory of that film.
villainsdeeds 1 year ago
Really? You did not think about how your life might have changed if you took another path? It did not remind you that youre not your closest relative? That's not entirely true I did get one thing out of it...Nausea from all the camera shakes and lens flares.
BondFreek 1 year ago
@villainsdeeds And here is someone who has seen the Wrath of Khan, and still loved this new incarnation of Star Trek. And there are plenty of Trekkies who liked or loved this movie and recognized it as Star Trek as the Star Trek's that came before it.
Potrimpo 1 year ago
@Potrimpo You might have seen The Wrath of Kahn but i bet you have no idea what it was about. You probably think it's about revenge, and you would be wrong. Star trek is not about revenge or pointless action. It's about issues concerning today’s world. What was this movie about? The economy? Terrorists? Small dictators with nuclear power? Corruption of the constitution? No, none of these things. It was a mindless introduction of bizarro Star Trek.
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek And once again, not only you lost the bet, you only proved yourself wrong yet again. Khan was on a quest for vengeance, and that was only obvious. Picard was on the same quest on First Contact, also a variation of Moby Dick, and the episode Arena where Kirk was on a quest of vengeance when Cestus 3 was destroyed by the Gorn believing it was a preemptive strike.
Potrimpo 1 year ago 2
@Potrimpo Once again you missed the point of The Wrath of Kahn. Was Kahn out for vengeance? Yes. Was that the point of the movie? NO. You, and other like you, ignore the Geniuses debate of the film. Geniuses was not just a plot device, it was the whole point of the movie. You are the one that has been proven wrong, you are just too stubborn to admit it.
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek 100% wrong, AGAIN!!! Genesis was developed to add tension to the film, according to the WRITERS!!! And according to the director Nicholas Meyer, the Genesis device was originally suppose to be a bomb that destroys everything. But he nixed that idea because he believed that the Federation would never build such a weapon. So he read an article on terraforming, changing an inhospitable planet into a living, breathing planet. And thus the legend of Genesis of Star Trek.
Potrimpo 1 year ago
@BondFreek Plus, dipshit, why wasn't it called Star Trek: Genesis if the plot was about Genesis? Because it was called Wrath of Khan because it was about the wrath of Khan. As shown in the movie, which is supported by Terrell telling Kirk that Khan blames him for the death of his wife, quoting Captain Ahab, oh yeah and the Klingon Proverb that bears a striking resemblance to a line from Les liaisons dangereuses.
And Kirk's midlife crisis also played a pivotal role as well.
Potrimpo 1 year ago
@Potrimpo Would you go see a movie called Genesis after a string of movies about the origins of man had just came out? Movies like Hanger 18, and Chariots of the Gods. You see kid I lived through 95% of the Star Trek era. I was one of the thousand kids who wrote NASA asking them to name the first Space Shuttle Enterprise. I watched the animated series when it first aired and I seen the first 10 movies when they first came out. I know more about trek then you because I lived through it.
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek And all that, and you still don't know a fucking thing about Star Trek. You keep claiming Star Trek is about ideas and morals, which were made painfully obvious in this movie.
My god, I am still laughing over you saying that Wrath of Khan wasn't about vengeance. You ignored the fact that Wrath of Khan was originally called Revenge of Khan. But changed it when Return of the Jedi was going to be called Revenge of the Jedi.
Potrimpo 1 year ago
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek And just because you say you were there from the beginning doesn't mean a damned thing. If that claim were even plausible, then NO ONE could ever appreciate William Shakespeare, Edger Allan Poe, Mark Twain, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
If what you claim is true, how is it that many kids under 18 still appreciate Dr. Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, and of course 2001.
If you are right, then they should turn their noses up at the Wizard of Oz.
WEAK!!!!

@Potrimpo. They don't, not the way we did. We knew that Dr. Strange love was a parady of another nucler bomb movie and apolitical statement. To day they only see the politics. They don't get the jokes. 2001 they sleep through and don't get the underline measage.
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek And one thing you so-called fans failed to comprehend that is as much a part of Star Trek as is warp drive, the IDIC.

Potrimpo 1 year ago
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek Actually Albert Einstein had problems with math in the beginning. And I have seen educated people, like Doctors, who are clueless as to how to use a DVD player.
Weak argument once again.
Oh, and the moral plot for Khan, Vengeance. Something you still say Khan isn't about.
And you are 100% wrong. YOUR source said that Genesis was suppose to be something to raise the stakes between the conflict between Kirk and Khan.
Face it, you are a pseudo-Trekkie.

Potrimpo 1 year ago
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek Plus just like you and may other proven wrong critics, there were other themes in this film. Racism, especially with the Vulcan bullies taunting Spock because he's half human. A carryover from Journey to Babel. And it didn't help when the Vulcan councel mentioned Spock's disadvantage, namely his human mother.
And it was about how the crew of the USS Enterprise came together in an alternate timeline. A plot.
Potrimpo 1 year ago 2
@Potrimpo Was Spock picked on in school? Yes. Did the other kids use human insults like “whore”? No. They only constantly told Spock that he was not really Vulcan. Watch the episode Journey to Babel again. Amanda: “because the other children said you are not really Vulcan.”
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek And once again you are proven wrong. Simply because she did not specify how they tormented him. TORMENTED him. Which can include calling his mother a whore. Rewatch the episode again. Perhaps watching it may help.
Potrimpo 1 year ago
@BondFreek What it comes down to is this. You do not know Star Trek. Your knowledge is laughable and your arguments are pitiful. Star Trek doesn't support your arguments, if anything they prove the exact opposite.
So instead of being an insult to Trekkies around the world, go away and never come back. You lost before, you lost now. And you will continue to lose. So what's the point of keeping up this charade of you knowing Star Trek better than anyone else? When the opposite is proven?
Potrimpo 1 year ago
@BondFreek And in the end, you only do one thing you will always prove. When it comes to Star Trek, your knowledge and wisdom of Star Trek is laughable at best. And you just proved that when you said Khan wasn't about vengeance.
Admit it, you know shit better than Trek. Even when you deny it and say that's me, you only prove me and your adversaries right again.
Asshole.
Potrimpo 1 year ago
@BondFreek Oh, and my source? Star Trek 2, Star Trek Memories, and all available sources not on the internet.
Potrimpo 1 year ago
@Potrimpo. I have the same sources, plus the extra DVD on the Directors Edition of Star Trek II. PS: it's Star Trek II not 2. (Sorry, I “nerded” out there for a moment)
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek For it to be a classic, it doesn't matter when someone watches it. And it sure doesn't matter whether or not they were even born when it came out. It's immortal, being able to live through the decades just as enticing as when they first came out.
Does Kill A Mockingbird ring a bell? Or even Star Trek?
Argument is weak.

well done but not Trek
DanFrederiksen 2 years ago 2
Agreed. In the REAL Trek, Kirk wasn't such a psychopath, gleefully killing his enemies after the conflict had ended. In fact, the REAL Kirk at first tried to save Kruge even though he'd just had Kirk's son killed for no reason. What happened to a Starfeelt officer's sense of honour?
villainsdeeds 1 year ago 2
fuck star trek. dude said they are making a GREEN LANTERN movie!
NiggerJesusGodDammit 1 year ago
It makes just as much sense as a cadet who hasn't even graduated yet being given the rank of captain after the whole Nero ordeal. Or as much sense as Red Matter being both a black hole sucker and a time traveling agent. You know what this film hurts my brain. It had pretty lights...
Christina314 1 year ago
Uh, did you even see the movie? Kirk offered to save the enemy at the end...
Informed comments are the best type.
vargonian 1 year ago
Yeah, but he did so quite begrudgingly, not because he felt it was the right thing to do. Perhaps you didn't notice that, but it was one of the worst things about the new Trek.
villainsdeeds 1 year ago
Well, he was quick to make the offer of compassion, even annoying Spock in doing so (perhaps that could be out-of-character on Spock's part but given what he had just been through, I don't blame him, even as a half-Vulcan). He was more than happy to let the enemy die at his own request, though, which was a scene I actually liked because I found it relateable. The movie did an outstanding job being much more loyal to the franchise than it had to, but I wish it was more philosophical (cont.)
vargonian 1 year ago
(cont.), with more ideas mixed with the action. The enemy was contrived, the time travel plot wasn't creative for Star Trek (as critics seemed to claim it was); throughout the entire movie I didn't get the slightest feeling that "exploration" was even a part of their overall mission, so the Leanord Nimoy ending felt forced and out-of-place. But I feel that Abrams' balancing act was a difficult one that he executed very well given the diverse audiences. Don't get me started with "I, Robot"...
vargonian 1 year ago
And it's not like he just let the bad guys die due to shitty circumstances; he just gave the order and they blew the fucking shit out of Nero's starship. Ummm... Starfleet doesn't do that. Heck, the Borg don't even do that. There are a few other little pissoffs here and there, like calling Klingon Battle Cruisers "Warbirds", and whatever the heck they called the Seti Eel in this version, and the fact that the timeline change was retroactive, so that Jim's older brother, is nonexistent.
villainsdeeds 1 year ago
Ah I can't believe I didn't catch the "Klingon Warbirds" error during the simulation.
vargonian 1 year ago
Greatest incarnation of Star Trek ever. All the tripe (I use that term to be kind) that came before is nothing to Abrams genius! I know you like the old stuff with the stiff acting and humor so dry you'd need lotion, but those days are gone for good, besides hardcore fans. After time there will be a new breed of fans who will say they've 'heard of the old shows' but are devoted to the new (and ONLY new) incarnation. Besides, the new guys do a way better job
GLCorps2 1 year ago
@GLCorps2 fuck off who are you to judge who does a better job? Have u watched real star trek? Look, to be a fan of this movie is to be a fan of the spiderman trilogy or the dark knight or something, lots of people like run of the mill action films, and they are good films, but star trek itself is an entirely unique entity; and that is what being a fan is- you have to respect the REAL star trek to be a trekkie.
TheJunglesound 1 year ago
It's fine to hate the film, but saying 'this isn't star trek!! It sucks!!' is a harsh conclusion to come to. No it's not like the original, JJ and the actors gave said numerous times that this is a reboot and different! This is aimed for a different audience, and you trekkies have your box sets ;)
Dracilla112 2 years ago
No it isn't Star Trek and it sucks. Star Trek has always been a social commentary, characters, morals, and dilemias. It was designed to get people to think what the future might be like.
This was just mindless action. Cheesy one-liners, cliche situations, zero plot, and senseless motivations, and a lot of explosions.
Calling it Star Trek or a reboot is bull. It is just one of a hundred senseless action movies using a few character names in order to cash-in on an existing market.
BW022 2 years ago
@BW022 Why, because it mixed dialogue AND action?
Nanaman12345 2 years ago
No. Star Trek has always had dialogue and action.
However, its action and dialog was not mindless. They advanced the plot, rather than just being there for cheap laughs, corny scenes, and stupid actions taken by characters to setup more mindless scenes.
BW022 2 years ago 3
@BW022 You mean like the Gorn fight?
Exactly.
Nanaman12345 2 years ago
BW022 2 years ago
Jeez, the number of negative votes for critical postings just boggles the mind. But then again, some Trekkers don't take criticism too kindly... (Phasers at dawn!)
Kiwifrank 2 years ago
I think if you use your imagination, you can hear the thoughts of the crew, thoughts that could have been heard if they added 'crew thought option' on the DVD menu - just like subtitles. I can imagine what Spock was thinking when he kissed Uhuru. ' I can appreciate your sympathy Uhuru, but I must complete my priorities before I can come to you for dinner.'

These new actors can NOT bring an ounce of charm to the characters that the original actors created. End of story.
AnonYmous17 2 years ago

3 out of 5 stars.
chrisklecker 2 years ago
Being a fan of the original series, I can say that, it was the best Trek movie thus far.
I'm glad that the original cast has been revived. Each spin-off series just got progressively worse and worse. The Next Gen was tolerable, while Deep Space Nine was unwatchable garbage. Voyager and Enterprise, I didn't even bother with. The writers got more PC by he day and one needed a barf bag to appreciate them.
Good job JJ - thanks for keeping it real - Keep 'em coming!
Betelgeuse3000 2 years ago 2
Interesting. I thought this new installment was Star Trek in name only. It certainly had nothing on 2 or 4 for story, 1 or 3 for imerssion, or 8 for effects and directing. Throughout the entire movie there is a mysterious alien manifesting as a lense flare attacking everyones' faces.
The lowest point in this movie and the Star Trek saga has got to be at the start when a ship actually flies out of a plot hole.
Gammaclipper 2 years ago
I really liked the movie, even after watching it a second time (proof enough).
But it reminded me more of the Starship Troopers movie than the Star Trek series. Nothing wrong with a few Holywood action movies as long as they resurrect the series. If not, then I'll just watch Voyager for the 4'th time.

Horrible, unimaginative trash. This aint no Star Trek.
Just another CGI-laden popcorn flick. A sad way to end the franchise.
bellerophon602 2 years ago

Friday the ... oh yeah. The original Star Wars!
orenjiotoku 2 years ago
Did you actually see the movie? What part of it didn't you like specifically?
Personally, I think there's nothing wrong with re-telling a story if you can add something new and original to it. Robin Hood is the oldest story in the english language and it has been changed many times before it become the Robin Hood we all know.
Not everything in a 'classic' is timeless. People's and society's values change all the time, even if older people want to be conservative. Imitation is a compliment
uitblazenindepijp 2 years ago
Your point is contradictory. Re-telling is neither new nor promotes originality. It is the opposite of originality. Robin Hood is literary character. The Star Trek characters were brought to life/fame by the actors, as much as the writer/creator. The endearment for the characters is mainly BECAUSE of the actors. These new actors, can bring an ounce of the charm that the original actors did. Its pointless to try. But when money is the goal... you know the rest. Pure candy coated trash.
orenjiotoku 2 years ago
oops, I meant, "...
