The long vid didn't bother me at all. I was just browsing youtube and stumbled upon this and I stayed through the entire video. I was thinking about dying my locs and this vid was very informative, very helpful. Thank you sooo much. Peace
@meroekhalia how did you keep your locs moisturized after adding color, because i just added color to mine and i am not sure how to moisturize other than a water and essential oils mixture.
@meroekhalia thanks for the great educational video!i'm planning to color in the next few days and you have really got me hip to the game! thanks again! btw your locs are amazing fellow LSF!
what do you think about dying the locs black? Is that as harmful? What about every 3 months? My hair is a dirty red brown-- okay I cant deal with that, I need em blue black......any advise?
@TheSkyhazFallen No matter the color, any dye can damage your hair to some extent. Every 3 months is definitely better than twice a month like I was doing lol! Everyone's hair tolerates chemicals in a different way, and also, how you treat your hair between the times you dye it has a lot to do with how your hair will respond to the dye.
@meroekhalia I love it! I Theres a loc convention here in philly 2mor, so I'll be casually asking for hair care tips from the locticians there. How far into your loc'n process was before you started to nottice growth? bc I keep checking and after 10 months my hair has failed to reach the middle of my back.(:
@TheSkyhazFallen Um...I would say about 1 year....and that was because I went and looked at photos from when I started. Even now, I feel like my hair is the same length it was this time last year, but when I go look at videos I did a year ago I see that its much longer. That's why its so important to track your progress with pictures =)
I love your hair, i dont agree with the dye period cause the chemicals involved can thin your locs and damage them. You should try cutting your hair into a bang, youll look really nice. Just an idea!!
Feria hair colour always works for me! Like you I find the hair colours products made for black hair does not work. I stick to the white hair products.
@evealexsis I use Feria as well. I used to use D and Lovely when I had a perm then I switched to Feria because they had the most beautiful blue black and lasted a long time. When I got locs...I tried creme of nature's bordeaux but on my tips..the\y bleached it first and that bright red did not even make it to my first wash before it turned a lovely something else...I've been using Feria ever since, I only color every six or so months by a pro of course...I tried a rinse at home & it was messy.
I suggest for people who want to color their locs and you dont want damage or you like to switch it up all the time like myself use Jerome Russell temporary color spray.. It works AWESOME and they come in various colors, I know I sound like a commercial but I am not affiliate with that company at all. (I just love the product) Hope this helps! ;-)
Next time you want to try to color your lock Textures and Tones it works well with locks and i have a bright red. My color is called Ruby Rage and I did not have to pre-lighten my hair to do it!
IVE BEEN THRU THIS PHRAZE SO MANY TIMES IVE COLORED THEM SOOO MUCH SADLY I DAMAGED MY HAIR AND HAD TO HAVE THEM CUT SEVERAL INCHES. STILL LOOKING FOR A HEALTY WAY TO COLOR MY LOCS LOVE THE VID WISH I WOULD HAVE SEEN THIS 4YRS EARLIER LOL
i'm still going thru that colour crazee phase...kind of! i want to die my hair red so badly!! then other days i just wanna dye it black..removing all the color in my tips..! sighs....decisions decisions!!
actually the colour with the highlights is called luminous blond once u add heat to ur hair ur gonna get the desired colour, trust me,thanks for sharing ur story chica,by the way love ur locks
Since I started my loc journey I can't tell you how many times I have colored my hair. Right now it is blond in the front and dark brown in the back. When people ask me about coloring I tell them I DO NOT recommend that anybody colors their hair as much as I have. You're right you have to take very good care of colored locs. For me though, its not too bad. There may have been minimal drying but every now n then I use a leave in conditioner. I love oils too. I guess it depends on your hair.
@jsix4evr I should have been conditioning my hair and moisturizing it often but unfortunately I was not. I'm sure you hair is stronger than mine was =)
@meroekhalia Your hair looks so healthy and vibrant though. Vids like yours and a few others are very inspirational to me. Keep up the good work and pls. keep the vis coming. =)
I must agree. When I dyed both my sister's hair, the color they desired (red and cherrywood brown) produced beautiful results. HOWEVER, when I dyed my hair (or whenever I dye my period... professional or not) the color just will not take. If I get it done pro... bleach is mentioned and I turn it down... I guess, not all hair textures are good when holding in color.
Great video! Just added it to my favorites! you hair look beautiful in this vid. It look so natural and lush! Can't wait to get half that length. It looks so carefree! Great advice! If (well actually when lol) I color my locks I will go to a professional. I love my hair too much to make a mistake and ruin it.
@tbey82 o wow your favorites? thank you!!! lol! my hair is vvery care free! last night i oiled it, this morning i took off my scarf and the style was complete! (I did end up tying it back later on) you take very good care of your locs i know when you get them colored they are going to look beautiful!
@meroekhalia I think it becomes easier and more care free as it get longer...the weight of the locks makes the hair lay down more and doesn't tend to be as frizzy. So you don't have to retwist as often. I'm looking forward to that. Do you think when you hair was shorter it was more work?
@tbey82 Hm...it should have been more work, but when it was shorter I had no clue what I was doing, therefore i didn't retwist very often. lol...I guess it all worked out though! Once it gets too long though, it will become a lot more work because washing will be more difficult...probably retwisting too.
@tbey82 well everyone's experience is different, but from what Shawnta715 said with her 1st set, they became a nussance once they reached a certain lentgh. my mother's are down to her butt but I don't think its a problem for her because hers are very thin. I wonder how we will look with locs down to our butts!
@meroekhalia I actually bought this thing several months ago, lol! So this box got dust all over it, LOL! If I don't use it, maybe I can give it away as a gift to someone, LoL! Oh, and I actually don't have locs; however, I have explored the idea because I luv the look! I just don't think I will have the patience for the retwisting every month or so. So yea it's def. not for me right now. I'll just deal with the loose natural hair I got. Thx again for sharing! :o)
@swizzmack I hope you didn't either! I think the biggest thing to keep in mind is that if you don't get the results you wanted immediately, do not keep processing your hair every 2 weeks like i did. No, I'm no exaggerating either lol!
@meroekhalia lol naah i'm good wit ma results so i def wont be doing that. i do condition ma hair alot and do hot oil treaments too so i hope ma hair'll b fine. :)
so glad you posted this video because i am a hair dye junkie, I've used that bottle and packet that you mentioned & thats bleach. It lift your color (blonde) thus allowing other colors to take more vibrantly but anyhoo yes you are so right. I just started my locs over & this time around I plan to take better care of them :) Thanks
@meroekhalia Thank You! :) Well I started the old set Oct 09 via interlocing method but they were just too skinny for my liking however, my reasons for locing had very little to do with appearance or maintenance so I continued with my journey and I loved it. Once I felt like I reach my true self, I decided to restart them so I picked out the old set 2 wks ago & I restarted them today lol I'm so excited because this set comes with no fear nor care in the world I feel so free
Thanks for sharing! I watched your whole video. :) I was thinking about doing color. I bought the stuff from Walmart (Clairol, Textures and Tones), and ah...the box is still sitting there, i'm sooo scared. lol.
@Geezeimhungry Thanks for sticking around for the loooong video haha! I encourage you to explore coloring your locs, just make sure you do a lot of research before you open that box! lol!
i just bought a boxx of color just to dye the middle section of my hair. i love my locs and i have fun coloring them. i take great care of my locs, hot oil treatments are great for colored locs
=/ kinda discouraging, i really really wanna color my hair but im reluctant now. knowing me, im gonna do it anyway, i'll just make sure i go about things the smart way, thanks.
@OverXposedKC91 I'm sorry for discouraging you! Coloring your hair can be a wonderful and fun thing as long as you know what you are doing and take excellent care of it. However, most people don't know what they ar doing when they color their hair, and they get too excited without doing their research. Our locing process is too much of a journey to damage it with dye.
Hey Lady! Your locs look great!!! Thanks for sharing your story on coloring your locs too...I used to wear my first set in a bright red color...I loved the color but hated washing my hair or getting it wet because the color would leak...in addition, the color dried my already dry hair out even more and I had a lot of split ends...so, I decided to cut out the colored locs vs. color over it..so I could have my all natural texture and color again..I'm glad I did and don't know if I'll color again..
@mylaylay18 Yes, our stories are very similar! I was going to dye the red and blond hair black but my cousin who is a hair dresser told me that hair dye has green in it (I'm sure I'm not explaining it correctly) and that my hair would turn green if I put it on top of the already color treated hair...something like that! lol! I wasn't willing to run the risk.
Good advice. I colored my locs last week with the sole intent of covering some much acquired 'gray' strands. They had become quite a nuisance for me, so I thought about it and thought about it , and purchased the DK & Lvly Jet Black to cover them. Only the crown and temple. Like you, my sister thought I should have used a product for Caucasian hair, but overall, my experience has been good. I went darker, so I wasn't really stripping it, etc. I'll be monitoring my progress for everyone though..
@katbalu I'm glad that you are pleased with your results! I should have clarified that point about going lighter being the problem...going darker seems to work just fine. My mother colors her gray hairs every once in a while too and she never has any issues.
@LeslieMoniqueTV I dind't mean to scar you! lol! I jus want people to do their research before they start putting all kinds of mess in their beautiful locs! If you can go to a natural hair professional, I suggest that.
@5016jay My mother got me hena to try when I was in high school but it did absolutely NOTHING for me! lol! Hopefully your experienc will yield better results.
Heyyyy I use to use that Jazzing thing, I dyed my hair in oct, I wish Id have know that dying locs was a more intense process than non locd ;0( I shouldve used an applicator brush.
@SheritaBolasingh I'm not sure that an applicator brush would have made it better because it would be harder to get the dye onto all of the hair...or at least thats how I imagine it might be. Do you like the way it turned out?
@meroekhalia it was a loonnng time ago with the Jazzing and I loved it but i was relaxed then, when I dyed it in Oct. 2010, I used dark and lovely honey blonde and I was not satisfied because it didnt penetrate or even get every loc :09
