i was involved with a catia related project until a year ago but didnt have a chance to see abacus. its good to know about how catia can associate with abacus.
I have been working with Cad packages for years and I will say without any bias that Catia is the most powerefull all around software on the planet. I am a cam, cnc, cmm, machinist guru and I say that without bragging but the facts are the facts. All the automakers switched to catia and all the aviation companies. If these big guys use it what does that say. It may be too big for the lil guy but it is the bomb. If you are a lil guy just use solid works. O yeah, we paid 30,000 for our package.
I work in Carrera (SAFILO) and we all use catia V5R18 for designing (CAM) of ski and sunglasses and molds, for CAM and for analysis.
And we produce sunglases for Armani, Dior, Yves saint laurent, Gucci, Carrera, Emporio armani, Diesel, Balenciaga, Oliver, Oxido, Valentino, Marc Jacobs,...
Those version are old and do not have near the features or workability of the new versions. Also they lack the single most important part of CATIAv5, the help files. The help is tremendous. EVERY feature, I mean EVERY feature has a step by step tutorial.
CATIAv5 is the premier 3D Design & Manufacturing Program. You can design anything from a toaster to an airplane as discussed above. Almost every car designed today is designed in CATIA. The amount of functions this program have is increadable. The help has a tutorial for every function that the program has. Most advanced computer users (such as my self) would not use the help but with this program it does come in handy.
I would argue that the premier program to be UG NX. It by far is much more feature laden and easier to use than Catia. Not to mention it's companion PDM package, Teamcenter.
You cant be serious. Did you ever try working with catia, i did and i do work with catia. Every car manufacturer in the world, and every plane manufacturer know what catia is. I work with AM2 licence, and regarding AM (advanced machining) i cant find no better program i the world. Forget delcam, mastercam,...
Can you tell me one thing what you cant do with catia?
And catia is user friendly (just try pro engineer or any other program)
The one place I worked had CADAM 10 years after IBM stopped making it. They were gonna go with Catia, but then decided to go with Unigraphics instead.
One thing to note: CADAM and Catia were both designed for Boeing originally. Those programs are better designed for stuff like that (planes, cars, and such aerodynamic stuff). For mechanical/industrial design, SolidWorks, Unigraphics, and a few others, are better solutions for most companies where the designers don't have CAD experience.
Catia was writen by Dassault systemes in france. The software was originally intended for the development of Dassault's Mirage fighter jet, but was adopted by numerous well known companies world-wide.
Practically all automotive, plane, submarine, ship,... manufacturers use Catia.
Catia allso covers arhitecture, electronics,...
Catia covers everything, from comcept to CAD to CAM to CAE (analysis).
No, that's not true. It starts at around $10K, with configurations running into 6 figures. When you buy the program, you are buying a "seat". Anyone will give you the install media for free - it's the license that you pay for. (which you can't run the program without) First, the big fee, then, the maintenance fee for every year after that.

I do agree with some of you on catia being the best software out there, but UG NX has more functionality and the learning curve is very steep.
UG NX:

You can get the complete CATIA documentation online. Why dont u just watch some video tutorials here and learn what u can.

hahaha. What can you do with CATIA. CAD or CAM or blblblbl.

It cost $30,000 to buy the program without any seats. A seat of Mechanical Design P2 (MD2) run about 1,500 per year.

When you purchase one seat of MD2 it cost a one time fee of $30,000 and then 1,500 each year after that.
You are correct every seat of every license you purchase cost a large one time fee and then a "maintenance" fee each year after that.
ctempleton3 4 years ago
MD2 is not that expensive. HD2 isn't even that much. (about 22K) The maintenance is 14% of the list price annually on most bundled packages.
I'm a customer, and own both MD2 and HD2. (shareable) Pretty sure I'm right about this one...

its a program called CATIA. all the planes designed in the last 10 yrs are created by this program and most modern cars too.

Yeh its neat to think that somewhere there is a tape or hard drive with the entire 777 on it. Probably in a bank vault with armed guards!
