How can any one say that Hank Marvin concidring his talent and the Legendary Musicians he inspired. Is Not the Most Important Guitarist in Rock History. Hank And The Shadows are Rock and Roll Period.
HAKK MARVIN, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HEARD YOU PLAY. YOU ARE DEFINATELY AN ACCOMPLISHED MUSCIAN. I GUESS I HEARD YOU BEFORE BUT DID NOT KNOW WHO YOU WERE WHEN YOU PLAYED FOR SIR CLIFF RICHARD. GOD BLESS YOU!
Playing this clean is not easy. When I first heard Hank I thought he was playing "easy" pieces. As I continued to explore this guitarist I realize what I am hearing is pure and classic and it is a tone and style he shares with few others. Clean and pure is NOT easy.
this is a lovely tune by the hank marvin and the shadows my wifes late husband Lord roland beare used to play this tune and it is still well loved in this house.
Hank rules! But I got a little chuckle when Bruce slighly moves into the camera view at 1:57-2:02. Hey, if the camera man isn't giving you some shots, just move into the field of view! I like it, Bruce! A little cheezy, but you rock too! ;)
how to ruin a great piece of music in one go..let hank play it...im not saying hank is bad but there is no comparison between mark and hanks version...
i reckon hank's wife would be jealous because he has a love affair with that red guitar which is timeless he talks to it and it talks back to him. a genius, a gentleman, and an entertainer , simply the best
I love Knopfler's original version, and he did write it, while at the same time keeping in mind that Hank Marvin is his hero and the reason he picked up the Fender Strat in the first place...
spookymoo..YOU are spot on!..the shadows were the FIRST and made thousands learn to play the guitar...and NO one has copied their unique sound...HANK MARVIN...GENIUS
I really hate to say this as i have so much respect for Marvin's influence on an entire generation of guitarists, but I do think this just sounds a bit... empty, when compared with Knopfler's recording - in my opinion it really does need the sax, just to give the extra kick to that chorus
Any musician can do a cover version his own way and comparing with the original is rubbish as long as the cover is good and this is GOOD. The tune makes your hair stand on end when you hear it on the terraces at St James Park, whichever Geordie, Knopfler or Marvin plays it !
Marvin is a living legend. So much better than some of the shit guitarists doing the rounds today. He has inspired all the greats from Clapton, Knopfler, Brian May etc. If you actually play the guitar you have to respect his talent. If you don't play, then you have no clue what you are talking about
You have got to remember that Hank doesn't Finger Pluck, he always uses a plectrum. hence the reason why the tune doen't really "jell". This needs played Knopler style without a plectrum.
i cant name a more influential or more listened to guitarist and you can chuck loads of names at me. this guy still fills halls after 50 years no argument really is there
This is a disgrace, surely if you want to copy a track the idea is to do it better, Hank and his boys have well and truely crucified this track, shame on them.
Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Eric C & many many more British Guitarist's took up the axe because of this man. In truth as kids they all wanted to play Hank.
They're both very different styles and they're both fantastic. But Hank gets my vote as he was FIRST !!!
In the early 60s nobody had ever heard a guitar being played like this and when I first heard them they blew my mind - I was eleven at the time and I don't think I've ever recovered.... :-)
thats do to the fact that he's so modest but knopfler's the best his compations are way better then marvin and his guitar playing is no match for anyone
If he isn't in the same league as Mark Knopfler, why then did M K especially invite him on the "Brothers in Arms" tour, just to play this number. Please check your facts. Also read who M K attributes his success as a guitar player to. That's right - Hank Marvin! Oh! What a surprise!

This is The Shadows, they are a guitar instrumental band, they don't have a sax player, they interpret and play music in their own style.
If you want to hear it played like Mark Knopfler, listen to Mark Knopfler's version.
They are completely different, but they are both great versions in their own right.

Agree! Definitely needs the sax part to fill the melody out as it does soundd a bit hollow w/o it.
