  • Some of my best musical experiences have been listening live to Ed's different trios. Good call on naming Claude Ranger on drums! I was wondering if that was him or not.

  • Something huge must have happened at 3:26 but I can't tell what it is.

  • @GuitOp81 sometimes ya just gotta fart....

  • every time I watch one of EB's videos-I want to cry a little- and hang up the strings-(tele and all).Just a shame he wont play publicly.Man can swing.Just a joy.Trio was tight. We miss ya EB.

  • Yeah Ed!!! There are no words! Kudos to the great rythym section!

  • (...Claude Ranger on drums!...)

  • He was one of a kind. he made you think there were 2 guitar players playing on Pure Desmond. To see this footage of him is truly inspiring. Thanks for posting.

  • Fabulous : )

  • this is great--never heard the guybefore...only checked him out because desmond played with him.

  • Un genio, uno de los mejores guitarristas de jazz que he oido!!

  • It seems none of the guitarists here have commented on his right hand nails. They are manicured in the style of a classical guitarist, not easy to maintain playing steel strings. This has a lot to do with both his precision and his tonality while still playing with a pick. Personally, I play with fingertips and thumb, a personal choice. On a technical level, I thought that was worth noting.

  • 2:45 lol!

  • The greatest chord melody jazz guitarist of the twentieth century.

  • It interesting that Mr. Bickert didn't use a guitar strap on his Telecaster during this performance. Playing at that level and keeping a guitar from sliding off your lap is pretty heavy-duty.

This guy is my present guitar hero.

  • what year was this?

  • Ed changed to a humbucker pickup in 1980 or so. here he is playing the single coil pickup. So I'd say late 1970"s

  • Ed Bickert was fairly well known here in Canada. He did a lot of TV work. He always looked kind of like a mortician when playing, but was right up there in the jazz guitar world. Nobody cooler...

  • Isn't Ed Bickert on the live album "Paul Desmond Quartet"?

  • yes, and there are several CDs by Paul Desmond with Ed Bickert

it's right: "one of the best players a lot of people have never heard". or, one of the most underrated guitar genius ever

NyJazzGuit, very thanks for sharing this video

  • he also recorded several duo albums with Don thompson and at least one trio album with Don and Terry.. I wore those albums out...

  • Ed & Paul did some tremendous work during the time they were together. I have every recording they ever did together. Their work is understated & unbelieveably beautiful. I had the great honor of attending an Ed Bickert Jazz Workshop, & all I can say is that Ed's technique is beyond words. He was recommended to Desmond by Jim Hall, & that's when he finally began to become known as the great jazz guitarist he is.

  • Great playing. By the way, that's Canada's greatest jazz drummer Claude Ranger on drums.

  • what about ted warren?

  • Ted is a wonderful drummer. So are Terry Clark, Kevin Dempsey, Mike McClelland and several others in Canada. Claude was on another level. Any of these drummers would agree.

  • elguitaro, you're absolutely right man. I loved the definition "one of the best players a lot of people have never heard". Bickert's style of playing is always fresh and special imaginately and especially harmonically.

les virtuoso than Bill Evans, but reminds him a lot.

no doubt. A brilliant guy and truely unknown.

The most beautiful clip of Ed in my opinion is his version for "you'd be so nice" which is great standard that is implemented by a fantastic guitarist. search for it in YouTube

  • Wow! Don Thompson's solo is also fantastic!

  • Don is also a great piano player and an even better vibes player...

  • NYJazzGuit, you're the man for posting these. Not enough video footage of Ed, who is one of the best players a lot of people have never heard.

Apparently last year when John Scofield was in Toronto for the Jazz Festival, a Jazz 91.1 interviewer asked him if he had heard of Ed Bickert, and he said no. Don't know if it's true or not, but if so... he is missing out.

  • so nice

  • Aw Man, that was Beautiful.

  • Bill Evans on guitar

  • Is that a compliment to Bill, or to Ed? :)

  • Thank you for sharing this video...Amazing!!!

  • Man, Ed is too good. Thanks for posting this. This is some vintage footage, anyone know when it's from?

  • It's great to be able to see the 'Original Mellow Fellow." My Bickert has no equal. Thanks for posting

  • That just knocks me out!No humbucker on this one and still a fat, warm sound.I can't hear enough Ed Bickert, thanks for all of em!
