  • @EvilDarkJackel The rochin is most comparable to what you'd know as a machete. It was used as a weapon in Okinawa where items designed as weapons were banned.

  • @IntroSpectre6x3 the techniques themselves probably passed around from interactions with the chinese.

and probably even the whole weapon combo, the chinese have rattan shield and dao i.e broadsword, which is a single edged sword that is better suited to chopping and slicing.

  • awesome.

    great job.

  • super video

  • There a name for this Kumitachi?

  • is he using a real blade? or jus a wooden 1?

  • Gakiya Sensei is the Number One of

    Kobudo! Max respect!

  • For Sure !

  • It looks like a livened up version of the bunkai for matayoshi no timbei.

  • Where is the rochin here? They are using timbei and seiryuto. Rochin is a small pike, and I don´t remember it in Matayoshi line.

  • Thank you.

"...but it is very difficult to cut through an inch of dry hardwood..." Could you say that for a katana too?

  • Yes, in fact a katana with its tempered edge is likely to suffer damage if struck against a solid object repeatedly with enough force. That said, hard blocks are not as efficient in combat as deflecting blows, which would minimize both the amount of force on each weapon and the amount of edge contact the parrying weapon suffers.

  • Thank you for your interest.

  • i think this is not a real fight! but it is marvellous. a question: in reality wouldn't that bo split into two pieces with the cut of the sword?

  • No, generally a staff would be made of a hardwood, which might get nicked by a sharp blade, but it is very difficult to cut through an inch of dry hardwood, especially with so short a weapon. Also, the rochin was closer to a short cutting spear than to this sword of machete-like dimensions, so most hard blocks would focus on the shaft of the weapon, not the blade. This is just a demonstration; neither fighter is weilding his weapon to its true potential.

  • Yoshiaki Gakiya was one of the best students of Shinpo Matayoshi. My opinion is that his techniques are unbelievable. He is really good kobudo fighter!!!

  • Mistake: The other one is not Yamashiro but Ishiki. Sorry.:-)

  • These are Gakiya Sensei and Yamashiro Sensei, both diciples of Matayoshi (Shinpo) Sensei.

  • This is Gakiya Sensei from the Matayoshi line, ne?

  • Yes, definately Gakiya Yoshiaki

  • Bo would be a lot more effective if used to its full lenght. in our system we carry more than 1 rochin so as some can be thrown at opponent

  • excelente!
