  • Check out my rendition of Myst III Exile theme on piano!

  • I'd give anything to have the original hypercard version of Myst. THAT was the best on a Mac LC with a 40MB hard drive, a whopping 1MB or RAM and a 384x512 pixel monitor. You can get the Macintosh 256-color version of Myst to work on a new Mac with any universal copy of OS7 to OS9.0.4 (not 9.1 or 9.2.2) installed in the classic emulator called SheepShaver. I'm running it under Snow Leopard on a MacPro.. Just heaven.

  • @foodandart Yup I did exactly that, and now I have updated footage of the mac version entitled "Myst Mac Version Leisurely Play Through" with 8 parts to boot.

  • So the aim of your video is what ? Mac version is better than pc version ? I've played this game on pc and never had all the things you've shown, I don't see what you're trying to do here

  • @chnebierk System 7 at the time was far more advanced and perfected for average joes than was that of Windows 3x.

Myst is a perfect showcase of the power of Apples in 91

  • @Compwhiz128 I played it on windows 95 and so the point of your video is to show that Mac was more powerful ?? How interesting...

  • did you set the slow transition on the pc version?

  • 3:17 : I think they forgot to remove the green screen and to add the effects to the video on the Mac version. If so : Fail

  • If Id get permission I'd remake Myst Island, eventually the whole game on Unreal Engine 3, extremely powerful 3d engine

i have wrote Robyn Miller, but didn't get any answer (yet).

I love Myst and played it with 10years, about 1995 on a Power Mac, playing frequently since and absolutely obsessed.

I use Unreal Engine since 10 years and would love to recreate Myst island In the most living, breathing detail possible. Like 10 weather types, smooth transitions, real

    Maybe you can support me

  • I didn't have a PC back then, but I did enjoy Myst on the Sega Saturn, and it seems that the Saturn and Mac version share all of the "features" that made it to that version of the game, smooth transitions (actually you can choose the speed), smooth animations, same video, etc.

  • Awesome! I haven't been able to find Sirrus' Channelwood message anywhere! Could you maybe post the PC version seperately? That's one of my favorite parts of the game!:)

  • I remember seeing my sister and her boyfriend play this game on their Mac and being really impressed. When I got the PC version, I was disappointed by the lack of transitions between screens. It made the game less smooth and less immersive.

  • try comparing that to real myst its the same game so

  • @theendofit oh and also you should compare to Myst: Masterpiece Edition

  • Interesting...although, it seems like this is more of an "old versus new" comparison than a console to console comparison. Myst was a PC game before it was a Mac game, so I figure they would have taken some buggs out and buffed some things up for the Mac version when they set out to make it, especially in regards to the navigation animations, because I remember them looking much the same in the PC verison of Riven.

  • Myst was developed on the Mac, and wasn't until about 94,95 I think when it was available for the PC.

But the limitation was only one sound could be played at a time, so many music and sound effects had to be mixed together, as this took up more code space, some songs had to be shortened.

Plus, Riven and Exile were both available for the mac at the same release date.

  • This game always terrified me when I was really little.

  • NOOB

  • well, I guess the PC version brings out the reason that the boiler valve is rusty, because that's what canon describes it as.

  • WARDROBE MALFUNCTION!!!! In the PC version of MYST, for the Sirrus vid, Robyn Miller, who starred as Sirrus, FORGOT TO PUT ON HIS MUSTACHE ETC.! :D

  • Mac version is superior. PC version is the same as the Amiga version.

  • agreed, and its features were used in realMYST. PC parts were abandoned.

  • Come on compwhiz, I'm sure you can get better audio quality than THAT. At least turn off the fan and the motorbike before you start recording!

Anyway, I think most of the differences are a result of the fact the game was originally designed for Mac. The Mac version had the full soundtrack, smooth animations, and correct timing because that was the machine it was designed for. Then they got lazy while converting everything over to PC.

  • yeah true, but remember I recorded this using my camcorder

  • I'm not sure if some of these differences are mac vs pc issues so much as "classic myst" vs "myst masterpiece edition"

  • yeah so what its an old game what do you aspect its an everytime classic i see no big deal differences. I Played the first version of this game on Sega Saturn and it was awesome later the days i played it on an 686 system, very good sound. I think the only way the sound is different because of the compression modes.

And yes i hatet the fact that i only had to install quicktime on my old system to play it because they did the video sequencer with mac.

  • Hi Compwhiz128, what type of Mac machine were you running Myst on? Just curious.

  • what the freak at 6:29!?

  • Looks like the PC version of the pilot light was used for realmyst because the Mac resembled more of a simple picture, like a tiny lit candle. The sound effects for the tree were changed for realMYST too, and I hated the difference. WHOA! For the PC, that button seems like a very sensitive thing! the elevator is inside a fake tree.

  • sirrus message for Mac was reused for realMyst. I guess the PC version was the first, and was older. Still, that PC message actually made Sirrus' recording make more sense. "Take only one page [, my dear brother] (Not present in mac version."

  • The game was originally designed for Mac, which explains why the Mac version runs better.

  • I wonder why that gate wouldn't close-and why it had wood on the other side, as well as the reason for no first sound.

  • These aren't differences in the game. Most of these examples are just the differences in how Macs and PCs are coded and operate differently. I thought you meant the stories and game play were different between the two devices.

  • The only people who hate this game are impatient and don't want to really think about what you have to do to beat the game. But, I may be wrong. It just seems that way.

  • hey man, Real Myst is Mac OS X compatible!

  • I liked seeing the differences. Cool video

  • I had to put windows XP on my mac in order to play myst 10th anniversary!!

    I felt such a FOOL

  • leopard didn't "drop" support for the "classic" environment, the switch to intel would make it impossible...

  • ummm...yeah they did, before leapord, an emulator was used to run classic apps under the powerPC arhitecture. in leapord, they wont work at all,

  • That Mac bug is very strange indeed. o_O

But I'm not surprised transitions etc. work better in Mac version, after all Myst was originally designed for that OS. Though I don't get why Uru is still not available for other than PC. )<

  • google myst online and it will say its shut down

  • ... Yes. I know URU Online is down. I was talking about URU's PC version.

  • has anyone been able to figure out how to run myst on a mac book pro? note: withOUT using a "switch to windows" program. actually run myst 1 or Riven on Leopard?

    thanks

    michael

  • I don't think you can run Riven or the original Myst on any Mac OS X. The oldest game that works is Exile (with an update/patch) and, as far as I've understood, realMyst.

I keep hoping to see Riven for Mac X some day. u___u

  • they work on all powerPC macs until leapord. They dropped the "classic" enviroment when it was released

  • @narcomanic you are right it doesn't i've tried it myself :( *sobs*

  • me too

  • Very good eye, I loled at the part with the tree xD, very nice!
