  • Far too fast for the guitar. Sounds a bit hysterical. Good clean fingers though. A modern competition winner. Nice a shade slower on the violin.

  • Great player. Super fingers. Not musical at this tempo on guitar. poor judgement. Speed kills it. A bit faster than a good violin version.

For a guitarist, far too fast. I don't like it, but hey, all the best. He won a big competition... bigger, better, faster. Still, he is young...

    Many like it. Cheers.

  • @langsidedrive I am curious, which violin version you refer to. All the ones I personally have found that appeal to my taste, have exactly the same duration: Milstein, Heifetz, Fischer, etc.

  • what a cheap crowd.

  • the only bad thing about your version is the poor applause.:( incredibly well-played

  • Too fast!!!

  • This is the most amazing performance since the days of Christopher Parkening.

Carlos Perez

  • I was waiting for the sonic boom any moment.

  • If you ask me this tempo is a little bit rushed. It sounds better when the tempo is normal(like John Williams version). But very good job.

  • Whoa... he actually was a collegue of mine... Great performance Rafael!

  • I think at this tempo , this piece is so much livelier. I just don't see why people slam musicians for playing something fast. This is really good rendition.

  • too fast and none of the Dynamics Bach wrote into the piece....people call John Williams robotic....

  • @fraterpine Would you please name the dynamics Bach wrote on the piece? Please cite the Urtext edition you are using.

  • to slow

  • Wow... So fast and very musical. . . Amazing. . .

  • well.... that is fast playing ! But i don't think its very musical at this speed.

  • At this tempo,The Ghost harmonics reveal themselves.

  • @elbowout eh, if they're ghosts all u gotta do is call the ghostbusters.

    don't be hating!

  • so beautifull and perfec, brava

  • It' s the same old argument I've heard a thousand times before. How fast to play Bach? I've heard it played at all different speeds and i personally think he plays a little too fast on this piece, but it still sounds good. There are so many versions out there, that if you don't like it pick another one. I don't think anyone plays Bach like goran sollscher. But rafael is coming to portland soon and I can't wait too see him perform.

  • Very very nice!! How fast!! (TS)

  • Banal and tasteless ? No. Bach in the 21st Century ? Yes. After all, there are only so many ways of playing this piece traditionally so hats off to someone who gives it new life. Bravo.

  • Thank you for posting this video, I've been aspiring to play this piece, it really sounds great and RIGHT to play on this tempo.

  • In this video barenboim says urtext:

"There are only 3 factors that affect the election of tempo in a piece: Harmony, Rythm and Melody.

out of the three harmony has the ability to influence much more, you can have 10000 rythms but if the harmony doesnt move they sound still, and when the harmony moves, it creates another rhythm. Harmony also creates melodies, therefore its the most important factor for choosing a tempo"

If anybody here feels they know more than Barenboim please complain :)

  • Theres a video of Barenboim having a masterclass with the West-East divan orchestra in which he talks about Tempo called: The school of the ear.

    Youtube it...and LEARN.

p.d. Rafael's brother is playing the violin there :)

  • @guitalvaro you may decide you have something to learn too from that and aother great musicians (if they really are).

But most important and adviceable thing to learn is thinking with oneself own mind and listen with oneself own ears.

Hiding back someone's else words isn't a convicing argument to me.

  • @KidaReborn For me its still a better argument than saying "my name is "kidareborn" and I know just because i know."

When you record the houndreds of cd's and spend the years analyzing and studiyng music, conducting the Chicago Symphony, the orchestra of paris while mantaining an active piano carreer for FIFTY YEARS then you are entitled to even begin to argue if barenboim is really "a good musician". These spoiled "i know it all kids" nowadays..pisses me off.

  • wow incredible speed, bravo, but for the music, it's too fast

  • I totally agree with you. I doubt that Bach wrote the piece for guitar virtuosos.. :-) playing this beautiful piece of music (an adaptation, it is useful to remember, from the Violin partita) at this speed renders the piece itself banal and tasteless. Aguirre is an amazing guitar player, precise and with a clean sound. But his reading of this Bach's masterpiece is meaningless. Just listen to what John Williams is able to create on the same work....

  • You mention its useful to remember that its a transcription from a violin partita.

Please type either Nathan Milstein, Jascha Heifetz or any other violinist in the youtube searchbox, LISTEN to it, and then comment again :) .

    Thanks

  • @guitalvaro

    Nailed!

  • @guitalvaro yes, a transcription that bach himself did for the lute. If you listen to any of the modern day common practice musicians you'll find that it's not supposed to be anywhere near this speed.

  • @thejugglenaut91 You mean common practice musicians such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt (teacher of Rafael's Teacher) or Ton Koopman? Both of who recorded this prelude in its cantata version at the same speed. There. In your face :)

  • @guitalvaro

But this is transcription for lute not for guitar!

You have to remember that lute was a gentle instrument in those days and the strigns probley were very soft so it was impossible to play so fast like that!

Also in violin it should be so fast beacuse in that way its sound like polyphony.

Hear David Russell prefomence its AMAZING

In my opininoin, this speed is amazing!

But in this speed he misses all the polyphony and we can't hear the diffrents bettwen the voices.

  • one coffee is Ok, 2 coffees no problem, 3 coffees is a little too much... but 10 coffees its waaay too much

  • Brilliant interpretation!

  • Way fast to mel

  • sheet music anyone???

  • dude, you're a machine! :)

That must be the fastest tempo that I've heard that piece.

You're on hyperspeed...this piece sounds amazing at a slower tempo too.

  • My argument is that playing that fast we just can't follow the music. He just plays a certain number of notes the faster he can - is it the point of music? By the way, even if all the others play that fast they may be wrong! And on the guitar there is a point beyond which you can't articulate anymore. Listen to minute 2:10 to 2:30 for an instance.

  • Perfectly valid and nice argument. However, given that the people i mentioned have basically played ALL the works of back (koopman and harnoncourt) I dunno, maybe they know more about it than lets say other instrumentalists right? I tend not to see performances for "seconds" or moments, but as a whole..and I think at this tempo the harmonic movement is more coherent, but its all a matter of taste and opinion, thanks for posting :)

  • Thanks for your reply. My tastes are a mix from "old school" and baroque interpretation, as my teacher worked with Celibidache but also with Dechaume, a pioneer of baroque interpretation conform as to tempos, articulation etc.

Anyway this "prelude" is a mystery for a lot of presons. How can you play the whole suite after you've showed your skills on the prelude? Normally, you're drained (no matter what instrument you play).

  • it's amazing how clean he plays it at this tempo. wow. i'm totally impressed. what talent! my only complaint is the cameraman....

  • I agree, but it is way too fast. In this tempo the soul of the piece is gone.

  • yeah it's making me seasick....

  • Realmente excelente !!!

  • An interesting fact of youtube is the trend in which the viewer adopts the "most accepted view"- when comments are positive, thats the trend and viceversa.

Great talent like this creates extreme opinions on both the positive and negative realms, its life's nature. Bach himself transcribed this prelude for chamber ensemble, organ, harpsichord, violin and lute. The fact that all the major artists in those instruments play it with roughly this tempo and articulation is my argument, whats yours?

  • he's impressive because he can play it very fast which is very difficult to do but i prefer john williams version..

  • his koyonbaba is much beter then john williams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    LG

    Dani

  • This is phenomenal. I know the standard tempo is around 96 bpm, but I'm really impressed with this faster tempo. Bravo Rafael.

  • Very (too!) fast !

  • he play fantastic with great sound and undertanding of bach, but for my test is a little fasted, i like very much for bach, carlos perez and piray vaca, but i like veri much this new grat pleyers check to the grat aniello desiderio for italian music.

  • Very fast!

Have you every heard this piece with steelstring, If you like to hear check my videos.

    Greetings

    Joachim

  • did u win the competition?? you deserve it

  • Really nice! One of two versions I've heard at this speed, the other being Ana Vidovic. I prefer this one. The guitar has a much nicer tone. What Make is it?

  • Gnatek, 2004. Australian builder.

  • Amazing. Thanks for the music.

Have you ever heard this piece on steelstring guitar. If you like to, check my videos or shearch for Pal Paulikovics. Greetings from Germany

  • amazing tempo!!!!!!

  • Just check this out:

    Jascha Heifetz: 3:13

    Nathan Milstein: 3:13

    Rafael Aguirre: 3:13

For those that consider it too fast, well...two of the greatest violinists in HISTORY play it at the same tempo. Be happy the guitar can now do it too.

  • A guitar is not a violin. It is not meant to sound like a violin. It was not made to play as fast as a violin and IMHO does not sound so great when being played so fast (for this piece).

  • This is totally my opinion but few peole play this piece with any balls. This guy has balls. Two thumbs up.

  • Almost a full minute faster than John Williams.

Very impressive skill. Do you think it is in good taste to play at that tempo?

  • Amazingly fast and stable but some detail is lost and this makes the piece poorer. Still, 5 starts.

  • WOW,WOW....I have to start with your whole name...RafaelAguirre,,,when any musician aproach to that level, has to be consider another genius, like John Williams ,Cristopher Parkening,Kaori Muraji, and many more,my respect

  • too fast, bach is not chopin

  • I thought that nobody can play this faster than Ana Vidovic. He does it (maybe a little too fast). But nevertheless, an awesome performance!

  • did he win with this piece?

  • yes

  • No, he won with Aranjuez concerto in the final round, but all his interpretations in the differents rounds of the competition were importants for the final result.

  • That was amazing! Hands of lightning!

  • Best version since the old school parkening recording.

  • Fantastic, it´s the real speed, fantastic. Rafael Aguirre you are the best.

  • Please! All people, listen to the Cantata 29:

    /watch?v=N04sYD2RWhg

  • Too fast, very good otherwise.

  • Too fast. No feeling.

  • damn again...why you dont listent to the CANTATA BWV 29¿?¿? It´s here in youtube. Just put in "search" cantata 29 and you will listent to the ORCHESTAL version! After that, come here to tell me if Rafael plays it so fast.

  • ok after watching this how am i

    supposed to touch my guitar...

    perfect

  • Cuñaoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • wow his so good! I herd him play live, he plays Koyombaba the best!

    ;-)

    Cuñaooooooooooo!!!!!!!!

  • Wow; the guy was playing like he had a plane to catch.

A little fast, but truly gifted playing.

In my humble opinion, he actually showed more feeling than Williams.

  • yup i agree :)

  • , this piece is actually very hard, y tried to play it myself, and i asure you all: THAT IS WAY TOO FAST!!, in my opinion is the best version i've ever heard, the dinamics and the hability, and the clean sound, this guy is amazing, just look at his fingering!!....(that's the reason he won that contest you idiots, beauty can be expressed in many ways)

  • that's just too fast, music is not about technique, it's about feeling

  • I can write for you any sheet music

  • bravoooooo

  • implacable, imbatible, y superlativo.

  • I think the speed is just right!

  • I Agree. This speed ruined the piece in Rafael's case. However it could be a good tempo for a real Master.

Mr. Glenn Gould have had verified his extreme tempos many times. Mr. Aguirre did not choose the right tempo for himself. The good thing is though ,that once he started ,he kept te tempo throughout the piece.

I'm not a huge fan of the Williams and the Segovia version neither. This one is Impressive tour the force though.

  • amazing. just wow.

  • so, If Rafa plays this slower, would be musical for you? without dynamics and without articulations as John Willliams??.....that people say that is the "best" version.

  • Who says Williams' is the best version. I don't but I still find this way too fast.

  • uuuffffffffff

  • He wants to play it at this tempo and is coherent. Just listen to his interpretation.

  • It's impressive! But I wouldn't say I like it though... Too fast to be enjoyable. For me anyways... But very brilliant!

    Respect,

    Per

  • Yeah! this is a great performance!

  • The version of Williams is horrible, not Williams...

  • Envy is very bad. Rafael Aguirre is undoubtedly one of the biggest promises of the classical guitar in the world. The winner of Norba 2007, Arcas 2007, Roma 2007 and Tárrega 2007 uffffff fantastic. pshhhh Silence, the teacher is playing.

  • This guy has just won the Jacinto e Inocencio Guerrero Competition in Toledo Spain. One of the most important competitions around the world. And about his velocity, I see that you haven´t seen videos of NATHAN MILSTEIN (violinist) playing this prelude. Why always say "Segovia said..Williams played..." and never talk about important violinist that play so much better good that Segovia and Williams at the same time???

  • This is Bach, not Paganini!!!

  • Is this normal speed range? when kinda too fast one think good in bach could see whole frame patterns easily understanderble. could any body can tell 998-allegro and this which is technically difficult esp for left hand

  • I usually never leave other than positive comments to guitar players here. But now I made an exception, I feel it is unacceptable for someone who is technically flawless like you, to totally disregard the music. Try to listen to it a bit. Sacrifice a little speed for some effort in interpretation, it will reward you manyfold.

  • Great technique man! You have 'supercharged' fingers. But it seems you wanted to get through this prelude as fast as possible no matter the cost. You look up some Segovia teaching videos here on utube. He was toughest with non-musical students. And he had 0 tolerance for them when their interpretation was not musical, no matter if it was technically flawless.

  • This guitarist won a competition which shares a place with the GFA as the most prestigious classical guitar competition in the entire world, and you think you're in a position to give him advice? Something tells me he's thought about this a lot more than you have.

Also, this video wasn't posted by the artist.

  • rafael is the best :)

    5stars

  • totally awesome

didn't know guitar could be this kool

  • The winner of Norba 2007, Arcas 2007, Roma 2007 and Tárrega 2007 uffffff fantastic.

  • This performance is quite impressive technically. However, musically speaking, it sounds very much like a poor imitation of Ana Vidovic's interpretation on her early CD. And, to say that Williams is horrible is quite possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I suppose next you'll say that Manuel Barrueco is a terrible player too.

  • This performance is more better than William´s perfomance of course. Imitation of Ana Vidovic´s JAJAJA.

  • The winner of Norba 2007, Arcas 2007, Roma 2007 and Tárrega 2007 uffffff fantastic. pshhhh

  • Nice your interpretation of silence of the deads.

The language you use and the things you say to argument just tell what a great artist and what an incredible poet you are.

Sorry, i have no more time for you.

    Byez ;)

  • LOL. I can hear the A string ringing out over the final bass E. This is amazing playing but there is a lot of ego flying around at this tempo. A lot of guitar playing going on.

(Yo mismo)

FARRAAAA SUBE AL YOUTUBE LA STAR WARS SUITEEE!!! y me das propaganda :D

    zalu2

  • WENAAA!!!

    "Hilary Hahn plays Bach"

  • hola XzELsO!!

QUIERO ORILO YA!! me dijo q

  • You answered yourself in the second part of your message and don't deserve more words even because it would be like talking to a wall...guitargod (LOOOOL why don't YOU show us something more than useless words?)

  • So fucking Funny how all those who write "you must play before you talk" have uploaded no videos at all.

    Lol.

  • I don't like this interpretation.

Moreover it's sad how many people don't seem to hear music with the ears anymore, but prefer to look at hypertecnic execution.

I expect a lot more from Spain wich i know has a big big heart for music.

  • he won the public prize too!!!!! ERES EL PUTO AMO TIO!!!!

  • What a shame that music and art have nothing to do with races and competition!

  • You just missed the whole point! Music and art have absolutelly nothing to do with racing, because inspiration in music happens when there is no trace of racing.

And I've heard many splendid pieces of Rafa. But in this one he was either extremely pissed off that day (hopefully) or else he also misses. There is no music in this interpretation. I believe his fault as a splendid guitarist technically, is even greater for acting this way.

  • this guy has just won the first prize in Francisco Tárrega International Competition-Benicássim!!!!!

  • which, by the way, is the most important guitar competition in the world! WE ARE PROUD OF YOU RAFA!!! ERES LA LECHE TIO!!!!!

  • I would have thought the GFA is just as important surely?

  • If Francisco Tarrega had heard this I guarantee he would not be impressed. Do not forget he was the man who composed the Recuerdos. And a composer with an inspiration like his would remain cold to an aggitated ennumeration of notes played without expression. But Jesus was also crucified following different viewpoints of the semidocts of the synagogue. Ironical, isn't it.

Me retiro pues........... Escuchaste el resto de sus videos???...... Tedesco...... Alucinante!!!

  • John Williams forgot more about classical guitar than this guy will ever know. Beeeotch!!!

  • for starters John doesn't playing a perfect 4th at the end of this prelude!! It says a lot about an interpretation when the last note is hammered so much as to knock the A string flying.

  • Williams version version is horrible. Fantastic Aguirre, Ufffff!!!! Fantastic.

  • I really hope you don't mean John Williams, because if you do then fuck off. This guy is good but he doesn't have shit on John Williams.

Estupido.

  • BUt you can't compare two different instruments. The violin has only one note to play. There are no bass notes. The guitar is like a litlle orchesta and has many voices. If they come so fast togheter you can not understand all the notes at the same time.

  • I would reccomend hearing the CANTATA version (which bach arranged himself), in which this same piece is interpreted by an entire orchestra with an organ. Your opinion might change after that. Its the opening of the cantata no. 29.

  • Bravo Rafa!!! Te saliste!! Un abrazo grande.

  • Hola Luis!!! Bravo Rafa!!!!!!!!!!!! Besitos!!

  • Rafael is 22 years old, he´s so young and a great guitarist! congratulations CUÑAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :P

  • This is too fast for many a violinist. We have to stop making this kind of silly comparison and judge the performance for what it is in itself. Ok, violins are generally faster, so what?

To my ears, this is coherent, lively, but a bit mechanical, poor in sound, previsible in phrasing and lacking the extasy the music asks for. With all respect for the enormous amount of work taken to play this way.

  • super rafael,

    schöne grüße aleks

  • I could 'av him

  • I think people need to listen more to the violin version (or even better, the harpsichord or cantata version of the piece). Guitarists usually take it too slow because of its difficulty (specially on the B section) but the speed is the same any violinist would take it. They have plenty videos on youtube of that.

  • hey, if someone can plkay a guitar at least remotely as musical as a violin, I would have no problem. But he forgot it had to be musical. Instead of competing w/ guitarists he competed with record Rubik's Cube solvers on this one. Again, there is no Music! here. This was not a Rubik's Cube to be solved in a record time. There is no message from Bach in this piece, it is just a caricature!
