It included what we know as rock and roll, surf music, doo wop, and even poppy stuff like Leslie Gore and The Cascades. "Pop music" was the stuff the parents listened to like Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Dean Martin, and Perry Como. Some like Connis Francis, Bobby Darin, and Elvis were crossovers who made both rock and roll and pop.
