i just don't see what the big deal is.. he never really keeps a steady groove for more than a few seconds until well into the guitar solo when they're back in three.. he didn't play very sensitively under the bass solo (a problem almost all young drummers that i've come across have) and completely covered up the end of it. (maybe its the recording but the ride cuts)
yeah this is nice and together, but it doesn't really take any risks. the tune is nothing to turn heads. nice guitar solo though.
If you prefer drummers who stick to grooves more than Ari, that's perfectly legitimate. But Ari's playing appeals to those who view the drummer's role as less groove-oriented and more about dialogue with the soloist.
I think it's hard to say he's insensitive after listening to his records. It's the recording quality here.
Doesn't take any risks? Have you heard him play a 15/16 songo while the rest of the group is in 5/4 (rapscallion cattle on inversations). I'd say that's a risk
i think that ari's sound quality is absolutely incredible in first hand, second of all for ari the drums aren't like a "supporting part" it's part of the music, his makes drumming part of an indispensible part of the song
yeah! awesome at so many levels! did gilad have a classical training? seems that no matter where they modulate metrically there is no doubt ever where they are in the form and that is just incredible. Ari is the most interesting drummer out there right now
I saw gilad play in NY completly by chance. I was blown away. Everyone should go hear him play! And btw, get splitlife you will love it everyone! Peace.
to drumprof, i have no idea what you are talking about with a "thin" sound. I've seen Ari play probably over 20 sounds and this guy has the hugest sound i've ever heard. and also a stiff feel? Ari's time feel is unmatched.
These guys are amazing live... If you can see them, DO IT!!! They are just brilliant together. Gilad plays like no one I've heard. Especially for his age!!
I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, drumprof. I guess we could all relax and loosen up AND end up carbon copies. Ari Hoenig is on the good path of innovation- a MASTER
i don't ever hear the groove stop.
