I think he is trying to hold a mirror up to all the 'holier than thou' Christians who have succeeded in turning an all encompassing, dynamic faith, built on social equality, into something insipid which, sadly, has little or no relevance to the ordinary man in the street.
I'm sure Jesus, who challenged the uncaring, strict, hypocritical piety of the religious leaders of the day, would agree with many of the things Father Maguire does.
Jesus didn't advocate religion, neither does Father Bob.
the Church was a bit stale????? ummm, not quite father Bob. before 1969 church attendance was at its highest point in 100 years and there were an abundance of priests and seminarians. As for the cassock, Vatican II didn't say dont wear it
True that! HORRIBLE answer to Good Friday - It's people like Father Bob (which are way too busy putting on some funny old guy show) that put people off christianity and God!
It's not about us Father Bob.. It's all about Jesus
And if you knew anything about why Jesus died, you would know he came to bring light and HOPE back!!
And I agree with Basilbaybee - They DEFINATELY needa take Carrie off the show xD
@heartfullofwine (PART 1) I agree that Bob Maguire is very generous and kind-hearted. I really admire the work he has done in charity and his sense of humour. I am very sorry if we christians seem overzealous or aggressive, and I really do hope it does not put you off christianity. Please understand that we are humans and are imperfect too (Romans 3:23), and the only one who is perfect in every way is God. (cont)
@heartfullofwine (cont PART 2) It is just that while there is no doubt that Maguire is a generous person, it's just so hurtful and upsetting that although he's a priest and is seen to walk in the ways of God, his response utterly contradicts and changes what the Bible says, which is unacceptable and intolerable (Deut 4:2) (Rev 22:18-19). Jesus Christ did not take on the form of a human to show people a "new idea of God", or because the "God thing got out of control" etc. (cont)
@heartfullofwine (cont PART 3) Jesus came down in the form of a human because all the way from Adam and Eve, we have inherited sin and from that time become cut off from God (Romans 5:12). Because God is so holy and hates sin, throughout the Old Testament, people are required to repeatedly make sacrifices to atone for this (Leviticus). However, because God loved us so much, He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). (cont)
@heartfullofwine (cont PART 4) This is the good news, this is the Gospel, this is the reason why Good Friday is good!! Not because Jesus came to show us another "face" of God, but because by sacrificing Himself by death on a cross, He atoned for our sins once and for all and provided a way for us to be reunited with God eternally (Hebrews 10:1-14). I'm so sorry for the long response and I don't mean to single you out, but I just can't sit by and watch while people misrepresent Jesus Christ. :'(
Father Bob is such a vaguely Christian dude. That was a terrible answer about Good Friday! Where and when was Sin and Redemption and Grace mentioned? ... Come on Father Bob... "God is grateful to be given a part..." Come ON!
Frankly I am sick of hearing this dude on JJJ and 7pm project.
security is a big reason why people get into religion. As a strong atheist Bob seems like a very genuine, reasonable down to earth guy, much respect.
