For proof of some of what I've said, just listen to the last interviewee's comment in one of AAVE104's clips titled "discrimination." I wouldn't judge an individual who is victim to ignorance or upbringing but schools exist and as such they should take responsibility to properly educate these kids in speaking proper among other things. BTW there's a difference b/w slang and improper english. ex of the 2nd: wat yo name is? ex of 1st: dawg. Lesson? slang = ok, the other? no!
How do I know that most Black Americans consciously speak improper? Simply by looking at how they treat those that do speak proper. They look down on them as if they walk in a veil of arrogance while in reality, the ones that are frowned upon only value doing things correctly, not excluding speaking the English language. I'm Nigerian and it would greatly upset me if someone of another culture purposefully butchered my native language and use something as illogical as "being black" as an excuse.
AAVE is a rich and really complicated language that people need to start understanding, but if AAVE children want to grow up to be doctors, they need to learn standard english also
@try2bsweet88 This idea is stupid and only perpetuates the idea that blacks can't speak properly. It also makes it seems as if all blacks have this particualr problem b/c of something in our DNA, like it can't be helped and so the greater society must accommodate this handicap. There's a reason why there's such a thing as correct and incorrect grammar, and unfortunately, Black Americans have consciously taken up the latter. It's all a damn shame and I don't advocate this at all.
I refuse to "learn" AAVE. Sorry, I am contract my vocabulary becasue of someone's "culture."
