@WestBritWatch When Britain called a truce in the war of independence they offered a dominion. It was accepted by new Irish government and they said they'll use the new government to get a Republic.

The IRA wanted to continue fighting for a Republic but the Irish government wanted to remove the gun from Irish politics and achieve the Republic their own way and that's why they put the Irish Army at war with the IRA. As far as the new government was concerned the war with Britain was over.

@WestBritWatch Sein Fein set up a parliament in Dublin on 22 January 1919 after the general election in December 1918 and that triggered the war of independence which ended on 11 July 1921 when Britain called a truce. Ireland became independent on 6 December 1922 as a Dominion. The treaty giving a Dominion instead of a Republic triggered the Civil War. The Republic came afterwards when the Irish Constitution was ratified in 1937 and it got it's first president in 1938.

@WestBritWatch Everybody wanted the Republic... nobody was fighting against it. Two sides had different ways of acheiving it. Pro-treaty side wanted to accept the Dominion and use the government to achieve the Republic (freedom to achieve freedom as Michael Collins put it). The anti-treaty side wanted the war of independence to continue which they didn't have a hope in hell of winning. The Republic was achieved afterwards by the pro-treaty method of using our own government.

1) The Brits did occupy Ireland after WW1. They tried and failed to crush the Irish people and the rebel forces. Look up "The Irish War of Independence".

2) Churchill, Chamberlin, and Lloyd Geroge storngly deny that it would be easy.

Why do you think they offered peace in the first place?

3) Ever heard of the Troubles? Kind of the same as a modern invasion, only smaller and with a populaion thats loyal ot Britain. The UK still failed to win.

4) Britain does not invade as it makes no economic sense to invade Ireland. Also it will turn the world and their population against them.
