Being a player who grew up in Denver and colo. springs, I was not only fortunate enough to be exposed to his one of a kind style but he played the rockies regularly being supported by Barry Fey, Wild Dogs,Brother Brother,Teaser, standing in the rain,Alexis,Post tostee, sweet burgandy,Dreamer. So many Masterpieces. No player ever touched My soul like Tommy Bolin did. His is still to this day my hero and will be my favorit till the day I meet him on the other side. God bless Mr. Tommy Bolin
Dec. 4th 76 I was just 14 years old and and my Mom drove me and 3 best friends to Miami jai ali Fronton to see Jeff Beck with Jan Hammer. To be honest I did not know that much about the opening act Tommy Bolin. Let me tell you, this was no ordinary rock show of rowdy screaming fans. Instead it was quiet as opera from the minute Tommy started to Jam till he came back out after Beck. I remember looking around as people stared at the stage with thier jaw hanging open. Next days news was very sad.
@rythemslave I was there that nite also, it was a great show. The next morning I read in the Hearld that they found him OD in his hotel room on the beach.
I remember when my friend (a music encylopedia of whoswho) turned me on to Tommy. Found out we were neighbors as kids. How wierd! Anyway, Tommy was a genious. Even named my first born daughter after one of his songs. (well, not the song, but liked the name) Alexis. never forgotten!
@KellyKelrikShow - I suppose there is always some loser troll in need of a corrective hat...on every post. KKS, everyone on this page but YOU evidently knows that Marc Bolan, and not TOMMY BOLIN...played with T-Rex. And yes Bolin's artistry did suffer badly during his tenure with Deep Purple, due to substance problems. I have friends who shot 8mm movies of Tommy early in his carreer in Colorado. Trying to get them to share them with YT even now. He was unbelieveable.
Bolin was a very honest player meaning in his phrasing and tone...This one I call his dry basement tone....Love the room sound...Tommy Bolin did have an untimely demise, but he also had the magic as a player...Very underated....
It's a shame there isn't a musician, music instructor and drug rehab guy here to respond and display his vast expertise to everyone here.Could we ever be so lucky to find all those qualities within one humble body?
I'm not dissing Bon. He was a groundbreaker at what he did and hell of a lot of fun to listen to. However, He may have been AC/DC, but Bolin was going well beyond metal and Bon did not master an instrument. There's a huge, huge gap between a metal singer and a guitarist/writer who draws on a wide variety of music to create a sound that could never be mistaken for anyone else. Bolin was in a class by himself.
I'm a musician and music instructor. Think I know what I',m talkin' about.
......in my opinion, there are 2 deaths in rock that really leave you wondering just how far they could have gone...why, oh why???...... Tommy Bolin and Bon Scott.
Sorry, but Bon didn't master an instrument and incorporate jazz, metal, pop, R&B and folk into his style. You think Brian Johnson can't handle his stuff...please. Tommy was irreplaceable. Name a single guitarist who even attemps to do what he did. Nope. Not even in the same league, much less the same ball park. Duane Allman and John Bonham are far better "what if?" candidates than Bon.
I agree bout Tommy, but gotta disagree bout Bon. Bon WAS AC/DC not Angus or anyone else. To quote Angus "They would have never reached the hights they did without Bon". If you had had the pleasure of seeing him you would know, Bon, Plant and Mercury were the three greatest frontmen in the history of rock. Period.
I would say in 1970 no one would have wanted to cut heads with Tommy ..not Blackmore, not Clapton, Beck, Page probably not Jimi and maybe not McCarty. Peter Green..very close. Tommy was just freaking badass. Before all that junk....anyway.
@martianshoes TF?? t Bolin coudnt play his way out of a paper bag!! T-Rex stuff Great..But this SHMOE KOPPLETELT Skrerwewd UUPP Highway star in fact he ruined the whole song!!they were fools to to have Him........Nice DEAd....ED BadassS ome stoned 3rd rate player a bad-ass?? you must be smoking monkey brains and dog balls!!!
Tommy went beyond heroin into speedballing...smack and coke together. It does not get any worse than that. I work with addicts all the time, and no one disagrees: to quote Hoyt Axton by way of Steppenwolf : he walked around with tombstones in his eyes when he started 'ballin a few months into DP.
@ketiep that must have been a trauma for you - unfortunately I didn't begin to listen to him until 1977 or so, and I couldn't believe a guy that talented died so young, but then so many did in those days - it was a waste. Had these guys lived (Hendrix, Morrsion, etc) they would all be on wheat grass and carrot juice these days no doubt.
@ketiep I too will consider that announcment among the sadest days of my life. From the first time I heard Standing in the Rain, till today I consider Tommy My hero as well. I hope when my time comes I will have the chance to stum some chords and watch his magic again...R.I.P TOMMY........HEAR UM HOWL.....

Tommy was not in T-Rex. That was Mark Bolan.
I guess monkey brains and dog balls helped me at least keep history straight before I blundered to the world.
Tommy influenced Jeff Beck,... I suppose you don't think Beck is an important rock guitarist??
