Please don't compare Nick to Phil....go listen to some Brand X and you will see that they are certainly equals and Phil deserves all the respect for doing it first
@mitchqmitch Actually, his manager had gotten him an audition with Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford. No decision had been made. Not to take anything away from Kevin's great talent. Just a case of a story growing in the retelling.
He would had been the perfect replacement for Collins (much better than that other dude whose name I refuse to memorize). He was very talented. Listen to his solo work. Amazing. Very Gabrielesque.... RIP Kevin.
Kevin was the unsung Musical Genius who our sad societal cookie cutter music "industry" (factory farming for your ears) couldn't mindlessly mold to the status quo that afforded them sleep at night, so his genius was never embraced with a record deal with free license to give us all gifts of precious listening wonderment.
For a band to get up and deliver this kind of performance is staggering. I can only imagine what Kevin would have done with Genesis but I imagine it would have been a huge kick in the ass for them and they might still be cranking out great music today. Kevin may not have had super stardom or worldwide recognition but he had the respect of other world class musicians and songwriters and that says a lot.
@bei1016 Even more incredible to play it. By the way, we didn't know he was going to say "wait for Progfest 95" so we had to keep ourselves from cracking up while playing... only Kevin. He loved coming over and playing the keys with me at the end. Glad the ending went so well... that was my idea to do the IT/Watcher of the Skies type ending instead of the way they ended it originally... this one was more moving to me at least.
Gilbert's manager sent a copy of this recording to Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford who were searching for a new Genesis front man to replace Phil Collins. His manager, Jon Rubin, had come to Gilbert's home to tell him that he had managed to get him an audition and discovered his dead body.
@JPMeakO Hmmm... don't know about that exactly but Nick D'Virgilio who played on this did get the gig with Genesis. If it was both Kevin and Nick that would have been a VERY interesting Genesis record... if they had room for a voice in the writing. Pretty intense mix. However, this is what Kevin would have wanted it to sound like... Mellotron included.
That was ok but I don't understand anything about this video performance. It has nothing to do with the original Genesis song and it's just a bunch of mixed up rhythms and scales. It didn't make me cry or feel anything.
Not sure what you mean about having nothing to do with Genesis. This is an excerpt from a live performance of "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" which was a Genesis double album. this is the last 2 songs from The Lamb, "In The Rapids" and "It." Sorry it didn't make you feel anything, but it's very true to the original, and extremely well done by an extraordinary talent.
You make leaps I can't follow. Sorry. You said it had nothing to do with the original Genesis song. I told you it was the last 2 songs from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. So, I would say that it has a lot to do with Genesis.
It's because every time I eat chocolate ice cream and listen to this it makes me feel good and cry. I need ice cream to feel stuff. I like old school rock but I don't know much about Genesis and the description doesn't clearly explain it so I didn't cry when I first listened to it. I needed chocolate ice cream to cry to this. That's why.
Shoud he did not pass away .. i believe Banks/Rutherford would' ve gave him the job filling in for Collins.Did a great job covering Gabriel, and i could imagine his voice performing collins era genesis. He was in fact collaborator in one of rock n roll's best album (Sheryl Crow's Tuesday night music club), so his songwriting skill is undoubtly sells. could've been a new chapter of success in genesis' history.
up till a couple of months ago i had not heard of KG.. how did i miss this guy, the greatest Genesis singer there never was..a truely gifted singer/ song writer..we can only wonder where he would have taken Genesis had he lived long enough to get the gig..thanks a million Chrisslooter for this superb post.. and in closing R.I.P Kev, lets hope your rocking the joint, where ever you are...
You missed him because sheryl crow stole his music, got famous, never gave him credit then he killed himself not long after she won buncha awards and played his song on letterman and said she wrote it. live.
@Droopy777 It's Kerzner but everyone gets that wrong don't worry. All of you KG and Giraffe Lamb fans are welcome to hang around my new Facebook page where I talk about those days, might post some music from then and now... also have a new band with Phil Collins's son Simon that is almost as proggy as this. Happy to see so many enjoying this music and appreciating Kevin Gilbert. We all miss him.
@sonicreality Collins's's... you might also like the cover we did of "Keep It Dark" or the song "The Big Bang" which is me, Simon and Phil doing an instrumental in 2008! You can probably find it on youtube. Or you can hear it on our Sonic Reality myspace page.
Amazing, but seriously, what a waste!!! Death all for a more intense orgasm? So pointless. So stupid. Kevin, Michael Hutchence, possibly David Carradine, etc... What could've been? We'll never know.
Sheryl Crow? Hmmmm. Probably due 2 severe guilt..that is if she is capable of feeling that. Plenty of info online that explains the particulars. Let us all remember..Karma is a wonderful thing.
Fun...I love that song. Reflects real life events and people just like our treasured "Leaving Miss Broadway". I never tire of Shaming of the True. You have to give props to Jon R, Nick V and everyone else involved for culling together all the loose ends that Kevin left behind.
I was fortunate enough to be at this show back in 1994 as well as owning this videotape ("official bootleg") a few month afterward. At that point, I was already a big Genesis fan and had seen Kevin at the Troubadour (performing songs from Thud), but this was an incredible show. I'll never forget it and I'll never forget Kevin. (PS -- Buy Thud...top-notch album.)
Really well done. These guys show real respect for these great songs without being anally retentive. The playing is superb, and more importantly full of life. The drums are really driving this machine. Watcher of the skies is bloody heavy. Thats how these dark tunes should be played. Thanks for posting !!
Wow absolutely amazing job guys. I love this ending for the Lamb, perfect two songs to end a great album. The guitarist kind of looks like Steve Hackett, lol.
Real deal band. Drummer is copping the studio version NOTE FOR NOTE for the vast majority of the song. LMFBO.
