  • Please don't compare Nick to Phil....go listen to some Brand X and you will see that they are certainly equals and Phil deserves all the respect for doing it first

  • Karma is a bitch, bitch. (To Sheryl Crow)

  • What did Sheryl Crow do to him?

  • He was Collin's replacement, he was a week away from joining Genesis when he passed.

  • @mitchqmitch Actually, his manager had gotten him an audition with Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford. No decision had been made. Not to take anything away from Kevin's great talent. Just a case of a story growing in the retelling.

  • Fantastic!!!

  • Kevin rocks. Giraffe rocks. The drummer (Nick) seriously rocks!

    R.I.P. Kevin, we love you.

  • That drummer is just ridiculously good. Damn, this is awesome.

  • NDV could kick Phil Collin's ass any day of the week and Larry Paschall says "Hi"

  • I thought Sheryl already got hers in The Minus Man. And the mother she rode in on.

  • All I can say is, WOW!

  • awesome - RIP Kevin

  • He would had been the perfect replacement for Collins (much better than that other dude whose name I refuse to memorize). He was very talented. Listen to his solo work. Amazing. Very Gabrielesque.... RIP Kevin.

  • Where can I get a copy of this dvd???

  • Love the Watcher bit at the end.

  • love the bit of Watcher at the very end.

  • IT sounds enough like Peter to make IT really work. IT Sounds more then enough like himself to make IT their own and make IT very cool

  • It is here ...it is now ....IT is kevin

  • I would like to award Gilbert and Giraffe coolness points,. but they accumulated such a high score that the machine blew up.

Seriously, this is one of the best musical performances I've ever heard. Sucks that he's gone.

  • There's a place in hell for what you did to Kevin, Sheryl !!!

  • Brilliant! RIP Kevin

  • Kevin was the unsung Musical Genius who our sad societal cookie cutter music "industry" (factory farming for your ears) couldn't mindlessly mold to the status quo that afforded them sleep at night, so his genius was never embraced with a record deal with free license to give us all gifts of precious listening wonderment.

Karmic Tears for Hearts that fear.

  • id like very much the link of the whole concert, im really fan of Genesis, jajaja im begging you, i hope you see this

  • That was great , send me the link, please

    Dez Sanderson

    Youtube

  • For a band to get up and deliver this kind of performance is staggering. I can only imagine what Kevin would have done with Genesis but I imagine it would have been a huge kick in the ass for them and they might still be cranking out great music today. Kevin may not have had super stardom or worldwide recognition but he had the respect of other world class musicians and songwriters and that says a lot.

  • Best concept album ending ever

  • I'm so blown away by this. This must have been incredible to witness.

  • @bei1016 Even more incredible to play it. By the way, we didn't know he was going to say "wait for Progfest 95" so we had to keep ourselves from cracking up while playing... only Kevin. He loved coming over and playing the keys with me at the end. Glad the ending went so well... that was my idea to do the IT/Watcher of the Skies type ending instead of the way they ended it originally... this one was more moving to me at least.

  • Gilbert's manager sent a copy of this recording to Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford who were searching for a new Genesis front man to replace Phil Collins. His manager, Jon Rubin, had come to Gilbert's home to tell him that he had managed to get him an audition and discovered his dead body.

  • @JPMeakO Hmmm... don't know about that exactly but Nick D'Virgilio who played on this did get the gig with Genesis. If it was both Kevin and Nick that would have been a VERY interesting Genesis record... if they had room for a voice in the writing. Pretty intense mix. However, this is what Kevin would have wanted it to sound like... Mellotron included.

  • That was ok but I don't understand anything about this video performance. It has nothing to do with the original Genesis song and it's just a bunch of mixed up rhythms and scales. It didn't make me cry or feel anything.

  • Not sure what you mean about having nothing to do with Genesis. This is an excerpt from a live performance of "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" which was a Genesis double album. this is the last 2 songs from The Lamb, "In The Rapids" and "It." Sorry it didn't make you feel anything, but it's very true to the original, and extremely well done by an extraordinary talent.

  • Do you like chocolate ice cream? I like it but if I eat it too fast I get a head ache and the doctor said that is bad.

  • You make leaps I can't follow. Sorry. You said it had nothing to do with the original Genesis song. I told you it was the last 2 songs from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. So, I would say that it has a lot to do with Genesis.

I don't know about you and ice cream.

  • It's because every time I eat chocolate ice cream and listen to this it makes me feel good and cry. I need ice cream to feel stuff. I like old school rock but I don't know much about Genesis and the description doesn't clearly explain it so I didn't cry when I first listened to it. I needed chocolate ice cream to cry to this. That's why.

  • Hard to tell from the video but that HAS to be Nick from Spock's Beard on drums....just killin'

  • @tleonard42 - Yeah, that's our boy NDV!!

  • wow watcher of the skies as a big finale that was amazing

  • Que es la pera limonera él y todo el grupo...

what he is the pera of lemon

  • Have you heard of "The Musical Box"?

  • The prog cover band, or the song by Genesis? Please specify...

  • Sorry, I meant the Canadian tribute band with the same name of the song. Greetings.

  • You mean The Musical Box? Saw them a few years ago in Amsterdam.

  • Este tio me encanta...es un peter gabriel replicado...me encanta...me encanta...

  • I almost wish I was able to see that concert more than the Genesis original... performed so well...

(Although I would murder children too see either!)

  • If you can provide a link for the entire show, that would be awesome.

  • so often special people and events turn into forgotten footnotes, thanks for posting this very special event

  • What could've been :

Shoud he did not pass away .. i believe Banks/Rutherford would' ve gave him the job filling in for Collins.Did a great job covering Gabriel, and i could imagine his voice performing collins era genesis. He was in fact collaborator in one of rock n roll's best album (Sheryl Crow's Tuesday night music club), so his songwriting skill is undoubtly sells. could've been a new chapter of success in genesis' history.

    Too bad

  • up till a couple of months ago i had not heard of KG.. how did i miss this guy, the greatest Genesis singer there never was..a truely gifted singer/ song writer..we can only wonder where he would have taken Genesis had he lived long enough to get the gig..thanks a million Chrisslooter for this superb post.. and in closing R.I.P Kev, lets hope your rocking the joint, where ever you are...

  • You missed him because sheryl crow stole his music, got famous, never gave him credit then he killed himself not long after she won buncha awards and played his song on letterman and said she wrote it. live.

  • I head Kevin was on the short list to sing for Genesis, but it was too late he already passed...RIP..Kevin..

  • What might have been....

  • I'd love to see it all. Link would be greatly apreciated, Thanks!! Who's the players by the way?

  • Kevin Gilbert - Lead Vocals

    David Kersner - Keyboards

    Stan Cotey - Bass/Guitars

    Dan Hancock - Lead Guitar

    Nick D'Virgilio - Drums/Backing Vocals

  • @Droopy777 It's Kerzner but everyone gets that wrong don't worry. All of you KG and Giraffe Lamb fans are welcome to hang around my new Facebook page where I talk about those days, might post some music from then and now... also have a new band with Phil Collins's son Simon that is almost as proggy as this. Happy to see so many enjoying this music and appreciating Kevin Gilbert. We all miss him.

  • @sonicreality Collins's's... you might also like the cover we did of "Keep It Dark" or the song "The Big Bang" which is me, Simon and Phil doing an instrumental in 2008! You can probably find it on youtube. Or you can hear it on our Sonic Reality myspace page.

  • Amazing, but seriously, what a waste!!! Death all for a more intense orgasm? So pointless. So stupid. Kevin, Michael Hutchence, possibly David Carradine, etc... What could've been? We'll never know.

  • Chris, can you give trhe link to the to the whole Progfest 1994 concert? Thanks!

  • Simply amazing.

  • long live his memory and progressive rock,

  • ...who is Sheryl Crow???.....Oh I know...she is responsible for the swine flu.....long live Kevin...!!!!

  • His manager went to his home to tell him he'd just won an audition to be the new singer in Genesis.... and found him dead.

He would have been the best singer since Gabriel... the best laid plans.

    sad indeed.

  • Chris, can you give trhe link to the to the whole Progfest 1994 concert? Thanks!

  • wow, these guys are really good! covering The Lamb is not easy...

  • Why doesn't Sheryl Crow ever mention KG? Love to see his music sung live.

  • Sheryl Crow? Hmmmm. Probably due 2 severe guilt..that is if she is capable of feeling that. Plenty of info online that explains the particulars. Let us all remember..Karma is a wonderful thing.

  • "Sheryl's in the kitchen

    with the LA Lakers

    Trying to get herself laid,

    but there ain't no takers,

'cause they heard about the guy

    that she did with aids,

    and she's calling them fags

    and saying they're afraid."

Don't make me quote Leaving Miss Broadway!

  • Fun...I love that song. Reflects real life events and people just like our treasured "Leaving Miss Broadway". I never tire of Shaming of the True. You have to give props to Jon R, Nick V and everyone else involved for culling together all the loose ends that Kevin left behind.

  • What album/project is "Leaving Miss Broadway" from? Have Shaming and Thud, but can't seem to find out where this song is from.

  • Leaving Miss Broadway was only released Live. It is on the "Kevin Gilbert and Thud Live" album.

  • De todos los grupos de tributo a Genesis, este es el que más me impresionó, excelente!!!

  • Fantastic drumming and guitar work.

  • Yeah, that's Nick behind the kit.

    Man, I miss KG

  • Is that Nick D'Virgilio on the drums?

  • It is indeed! Nick and Kevin were good friends, in fact, Nick pieced together and completed Kevin's insanely good album The Shaming of the True.

  • He's the best of the guys trying to recreate "The Lamb". I simply love this. R.I.P. Kevin.

  • Phrasing is different. The drummer plays like Phil, the guitarist is attempting to be Steve and I respect that. I love that bassline

  • I was fortunate enough to be at this show back in 1994 as well as owning this videotape ("official bootleg") a few month afterward. At that point, I was already a big Genesis fan and had seen Kevin at the Troubadour (performing songs from Thud), but this was an incredible show. I'll never forget it and I'll never forget Kevin. (PS -- Buy Thud...top-notch album.)

  • Really well done. These guys show real respect for these great songs without being anally retentive. The playing is superb, and more importantly full of life. The drums are really driving this machine. Watcher of the skies is bloody heavy. Thats how these dark tunes should be played. Thanks for posting !!

  • Wow absolutely amazing job guys. I love this ending for the Lamb, perfect two songs to end a great album. The guitarist kind of looks like Steve Hackett, lol.

  • GOD BLESS!!!

    Damn good version.

Real deal band. Drummer is copping the studio version NOTE FOR NOTE for the vast majority of the song. LMFBO.

I thought I was the only idiot who actually learned to do that!!!

    AAA+

    Loved. Loved. Loved.

Gilbert has a pretty solid command of the vocal as well. And shows some regard/respect for the original. Overall tempo of both pieces is a little presto. But hey!!!! They're having fun!!!

    SM.

  • Kevin Gilbert effortlessly owns the vocals; the drummer completely owns the kit. Amazing.

  • who is this guy hes sooo hot!

  • I know kevin's brothers son, and he is following in his uncles footsteps (guitar wise). He should be very successful some day.

  • KG was a great musician, listen to Shadow Self!

  • Holy shit!! that segue from IT into WATCHER....i just creamed my pants

  • heart kevin gilbert

jesus christ....nick d really blew his load all over this one...

    listen to the drumming!

  • who is this guy? why is he dressing up as rael? sounds really great.. sick drumming... i've always wanted to hear a great live "IT"

  • wow thats great

  • Waouw l'enchaînement "It/Watcher of The Skies", j'en frissonne !!!

  • Ależ to nieudolne.Pokraczne i do dupy.

Gabriel powinien Gilberta za ten"show"od siedmiu boleści powiesić za jaja.

Z poważaniem Silver wielki fan Genesis.

  • Great, great show! Such an attention to detail by all the performers. Super drumming by Nick, obviously. Genesis should use him if they ever do a Gabriel tour.

  • They did use him on CAS

  • Meaning NDV responding to a previous comment. Yeah Nick rocks.

  • Great Stuff! A big fan of his work...What is the background of the Genesis cover stuff? It is great work...

  • This is fantastic - Mr Slooter if you have any more video from progfest 94 please put it up on Youtube- I bought the lamb in Dec 74 and its still my favourite

  • Kevin Gilbert is the bomb!!!!!! I first discovered him with the album THUD. "Tea for One" is about as poignant as you can get in a ballad. Check it out y'all!!!

  • I am a late starter with KGs music, but after hearing the incredible `THUD`, I am now a life long fan and promoter of his work. Check out the official site for some amazing live video and audio,or my site for some other live prog stuff we´re performing : )

( excuse the un-ashamed plug ! )Thanks again.

  • Brilliant, Could you please post the whole show if you´ve got it - you´d make millions all across the globe happy ! Thanks.

  • Glad someone put more Kevin stuff back up on youtube! I love his music so much - he was such a great person and entertainer! Sadly missed genius :(

  • Holy crap! That is just cool. I never will see him live, so a huge thanks is in order... He makes an awesome Rail.

  • It's Rael, tho I agree!
