I used to raised pigeons and gave away a pair of non-homing pigeons to a cousin who lived 39.4 miles away. Apparently when he took it home they escaped. The male came back to my house within a week and the female about a month later. What's amazing is that pair never flew that far away from my house before and they managed to find there home.
to make a long story short, you let them fly to learn the area around the loft and to build up flying strength, then start moving them down the road and they fly back to the loft, short distances, working them up to longer distances. They call them homing pigeons because they naturally will home back to the loft, no one has figured out for sure how they can do it ! Another one of mother natures mysteries.
Yes they do, just had a young bird become lunch for a falcon a few weeks ago. When I have a problem, I just keep them in the loft for a few weeks, and the predators move on eventually.
@ebmizer OH MY GOD.. today febuary 1.. about 30 ( and yes i counted while throwing them away ) of my pigeons was killed... I have no clue how this happened ( thgh the door to the loft was kind of opened.. ) But im not kidding... 30 of my pigeons died.. would you perhaps know anything about this... all of the dead ones had sharp peirces to thier stomach.. so i thght it could be maybe a hawk ( cuase hawks always come ) and Owl ( theres always an owl in the forest at night... ) owl flw away jst now
Hey,Im new with pigeons i just got 4 from a friend of mine i was just wondering do u have to train the birds to come back or will they come back on there own? :D
So, you can release a bird from anywhere & it will always fly back to your/its home. But if my pal and I get birds, will they fly back and forth between our homes? Or does it only work if I go to her house, and they fly back to mine; a 1-way flight only, no round trips?
when i first moved my ferals outside i used to sit for hours watch them fly around the neighborhood.. smart lil birds they are... i dont know how a baby pigeon that just learned how to fly knows what building to land on( his home) im just amazed... to this day... they still stop by the window they been released from
hey where did you buy them i have been looking to buy a pair for 8 month now can you plz tell me where i can get one i live in nashville, tn and how much does the cage and the food cost you monthly plz l rally want to know cuz i don't any pets
@topbluffa1 it depends if they dont get tired, get eaten by a predator, died on the way, or hunger. Thats why you have to train them good before a long distance race

A quick question. Is it possible to rain doves i.e collared doves to be free range? do they have a homing instinct?
hafiz789 1 year ago
@hafiz789 Nope. Unless you hand-rear them from a very young age but they can never be truely free-flying like pigeons.
