internation currency is a bad problem. Grreece in the Euro is a good example why. Exchnage rates provide a buffer to differing factors within national economies. We are not all the same and we do not all operate all the same and productivity are not all the same within economies. Also a way to keep different economies with the same currency must be found.

internation currency is a bad problem. Grreece in the Euro is a good example why. Exchnage rates provide a buffer to differing factors within national economies. We are not all the same and we do not all operate all the same and productivity are not all the same within economies. In theory it is a great idea but when you sit down and go through the factors and do the Math it is a disaster waiting to happen. Europe has been a good example of the problems that can arise.

A global currency would be a wonderful thing if done properly. However, clearly the world needs a little bit more practice in economics before that becomes realistic. The euro story, while not over, clearly demonstrates that the criticisms of the system in the beginning should have been listened to. Also a way to keep different economies with the same currency must be found.
But in the end, a global currency would be a great thing, *if it worked*.

@SentientRaven We had a global currency it was called gold. These fake currencies like the Euro and Dollar are the tools of the bankers for world domination. We must understand that when the bank lends you money they just print it but when you go to pay it back you pay back with your labor.

@whitefly2: The gold standard won't fix the problem. The reason that the US unilaterally stopped adhering to the gold standard in the first place was precisely because a gold standard doesn't fix the problem of money growth. Money *has to* grow to account for an increase in goods and services and when there's not enough gold to back the currency any more, a run on the government becomes possible. That's why Nixon ended the gold standard.

@SentientRaven Did you read that in a book somewhere? Nixon only closed the gold window he did not end the gold standard. Foreigners were able to buy gold for $32? dollars per ounce in 72 when the market rate was in the hundreds. All gold backing was removed in the 30's. Fiat money always returns to it's true value 0. The ideal that if you make a new car you now need more gold in circulation to pay for it is wrong. If you only print dollars backed by actual gold there is no chance of a run.

@SentientRaven You have no ideal what you are talking about. Fiat money allows the printer of the money to steal the value of the savings of the people. Without Gold or Silver there is no way to store value that can not be taken from the people by printing more fiat.Honest money built this country not the ten commandments.The ideal that there is not enough gold to run the world is slave talk. That is why the constitution mandates gold and silver as payment of debt paper fiat money was banned.

@whitefly2: Right, I was confusing the gold standard with the Bretton Woods system, my apologies. But it's the same point. The dollar was on a gold standard internationally and the gold window was the fact that you still have bank runs (or government runs), inflation (if you're lucky) and market crashes under a gold standard. Tying it to gold merely adds an extra liability, but doesn't remove the economy's ability and need to create new, gold-backed money. The gold standard won't fix anything.

Europe has its own independent currency and is *still* dealing with the global financial crisis. It has nothing to do with currency; it has to do with interlinked markets.
But tell me, why is it the worst idea ever? Please remember that I qualified especially that it would have to be done right. I'm not saying "let's do it right now".
