  • Super hero is true !

  • can i ride on it ???

  • @aldie0424

As my mother always said, "You can do anything you put your mind to." ;)

  • Homo.

  • @Talan157

    Boring.

  • Make one bigger, ride it, and destroy the world !

  • That's so totally how dragonflies actually fly.

  • lol

  • how long for can this thing spin and spin and spin...?

  • @rocker9h

It can spin for about 5 or 10 minutes when tuned just right.

  • Betcha some one's done this and used the project to make a vibrator. lulz

  • HAHAHAHA HOMO FCKING FUNNY!"#%&¤%¤"#!

  • A homophobic dragonfly?

  • I loved your comments XD

  • Good work!

  • wow, very nice dragonfly

  • wdf..!!!!

  • beautiful........ :)

  • wat is the type of magnet

  • @witchhunter8862

This is a neodymium magnet I got from a shake-type flashlight. You can also order online from a place like K&J Magnetics.

  • Mint! Odd thing all the inventors on you tube including myself get dragon flys and butterfly's around our inventions when we make solar or water heating from solar wind and rain engines and so on experiments. Must be our fascination with the dragon flies ability to hover :)

  • 0:00 - 0:30 = Fail? But then on is cool :)

  • I'm subbing right now. You're one smart guy!

  • Have you tried using silver wire? It is a bit of a better conductor, but probably not enough to make a difference.

  • mad geeeeeeeeeeeeeeek

  • Look ma, no hands!

  • whats causes the copper wire to turn like that?

  • @SiXReDFlags

The copper wire turns due to what is called the Lorentz principle. Basically, the current in the wire forms an electromagnetic field which interacts with the field of the magnet, producing torque. See "Lorentz Force" and "Homopolar Generator" in Wikipedia for more information.

  • Are you sure he's not bipolar?

  • @StrangeWorldFilms

Definitely not bipolar. Bipolar is common among motors. The unusual homopolar motor is sometimes called "unipolar". I almost called this movie "Unipolar Dragonfly".

  • @MrfixitRick dude i think that was ment as a joke......

  • @captainofpineapples

I know. So was my answer. ;)

  • @MrfixitRick lol i just got that

  • awersomeeee

  • is that dragonfly homofobic?

  • @trocki80

We are all the same Dragonfly on the inside.

  • FAIL -...-

  • Ok I know its all science but can anyone please provide more details on how this actually works.. I understand how a normal motor works, but this just looks too simple..

  • @redyoshi1985

Even Michael Faraday, the inventor of the homopolar motor, didn't understand how it worked. It was 30 years after his death that the Lorentz Force Law was developed which explains this motor better.

One of the best sources of info on the homopolar motor is wikipedia under "homopolar generator".

  • @redyoshi1985

to put it simple when electricity move perpendicular to a magnetic field it generate force in the copper wire in a specific directionz ( check the right hand rule)

  • this is awesome....... shut up you guys

  • wow that is really cool, great video :)

  • Homosexual dragonflies xD

  • @luiscarlosorihuela

Well, at least you spelled it correctly.

  • @luiscarlosorihuela

    hes above you ...trash

  • @luiscarlosorihuela

Please don't make us non-nerds sound dumb. While we are not as smart as most of them are, we certainly try not to degenerate ourselves to the point where we are trash.

    Whoops, too late for that.

  • @nisbahmumtaz909 You could become a nerd soon, with a bit of work, considering you can spell and have a wide vocabulary ;D

  • @MrJammification

Oh damn. Guess I have no choice but to contribute to society now :(

  • @nisbahmumtaz909 You'll get used to it :)

  • @luiscarlosorihuela you say what you are >:)

  • @luiscarlosorihuela keep your thoughts to your self dumb ass

  • @luiscarlosorihuela then why are you looking this shit up you STUPID MOTHERFUCKER!!!!!!

  • @luiscarlosorihuela ur stoopid how are nerds stoopid XD

  • @luiscarlosorihuela stupid asshole!

  • @luiscarlosorihuela Yeah well this nerd is actually making a difference in the world and teaching people all day everyday. What have you done today...?

  • you can twist the end of the

it will work faster and better

  • very very nice dragonfly ;) btw, it remains me radar locator a bit heh :) ..very interesting

  • That'll scare off the mosquitoes! Good work!

  • 0:24

    fail

  • The annotation reminded me of the Scout

  • 3...2...1.....

    SCIENCE!

  • took you more time to make the copper dragonfly than it will run on that battery

  • @conciousness88

Yes, and the battery is rechargeable and i am not!

  • @MrfixitRick well that is a lie.. you can eat?

  • @903harman

Ok you caught me...I'm a liar!

  • @MrfixitRick >:O

  • wth homophobic dragonfly?

  • dude the bug is turning right but you turned the spiral to go up when it go's right

  • chévere pero hacen propaganda a duracell

  • @bryanyquepues

I use Duracell simply because they have the strongest AA battery, with a 2650 MaH rating.

  • That was totally homopolar.

  • how long does it last till it burns the battery out?

  • @MrSporeowns

This motor can run for up to half an hour, but more likely will last for only a few minutes.

  • @MrSporeowns not long as the wire is coiled like a zillion times and so it takes up a lot of voltage'

  • me la pones tiesa

  • does this work with steel wire?

  • @Vincent2Kat

No go on the steel wire. This project needs to use non-magnetic, conducting material such as copper, silver, aluminum, lead, etc.

  • @MrfixitRick @MrfixitRick ??? should still work with any type of wire - an electric current through a magnetic field will generate a Lorentz force. Just make sure it's light-weight and properly stripped.

  • @Bizorke

Steel wire will stick to the magnet excessively, causing drag and stopping the motor. Other non-magnetic wire will work fine. The better the conductor (less resistance), the better it will work.

  • @MrfixitRick Oh yea I never though of the factor of the friction caused by the wire sticking to the magnet itself, very insightful.

  • @MrfixitRick Isn't the heat dissipation more intense on a steel component. I tried using it ... idk... maybe when I was in third grade to make this super complex Rube Goldberg thing out of several homopolar motors and my teacher got mad that the entire system was hot.. :L

  • @wiimasterplayer

Steel components have more electrical resistance for the same cross-section, causing more heat than other better conductors.

Homopolar motors draw high current, and can heat up severely. That's why the latest naval ships have 50,000 horsepower homopolar motors that use super cool supercooled superconductors.

  • @MrfixitRick Thanks... and that's why I stay away from my old lab table XD...

  • nice!! very creative

  • FAIL

  • look when its on the left the battery slightly tilts

  • To any and all of you asking for magnets, here is a link to one of the places you can get them: Go to the Think Geek Website and search for magnets

    Hope it helps.

  • @DK8380

The magnets from ThinkGeek similar to the one in this video would be the "Super Strong Neodymium Magnets" pack. It has four of the 1 inch by 1/8 inch neo discs that could be stacked to act similar to the 5/8 inch magnet in this video.

Other sources include shake-type flashlights, some craft or hardware stores, and on-line sources such as K&J Magnetics.

  • please sub back

  • Can it work with any battery?

  • @Kenzie27LovesJB

It will work with most AA batteries. They should be powerful and magnetic to work well.

  • @MrfixitRick Very Artstic,I kike it and im trying to make 1 myself But how do you get Neo Magnets? Can you get it from any hardware store?Or shops like that

  • @randomrighthere561

I got my first neodymium magnet (the one in this movie) from a shake type flashlight. You can also get neo's from some hardware and craft stores. The best way is to order online. I use K&J Magnetics; the link is in the "Show More" info.

  • where do you get neodymium batteries???

  • @Kenzie27LovesJB

The battery is a normal heavy-duty rechargeable Duracell, Under the battery is a neodymium supermagnet. I got this one from a shake-type flashlight. You can order supermagnets online at a place like K&J Magnetics, (link in the "Show more >>>" window.)

  • @Kenzie27LovesJB its neodymium magnets...i used one from the shower curtain...yes your shower curtain has magnets in it, look on the bottom of the curtain.

  • i clicked on this because the title says homo >:D

  • amazing! makes me wish i had copper wire at home lol

  • :12 - :26 = Herpa derp

  • homo is dutch for gay :D

  • @vuurwerkteamdamwoude

gay is english for happy. ;)

  • @MrfixitRick "Does you feel" ????? English much?

  • @HITTHEROAD19

Thanks for paying attention to detail!

The original comment I wrote down was "Does everything in your life suck ?", but then I changed it to, "Do you feel that everything in your life sucks?". I accidentally left in the "Does".

I deleted the statement to prevent further confusion as to my English, and I promise to wear my glasses for future comments.

  • @MrfixitRick Dude saying "Thnx for pointing me into my typing Errors would be enuff... :))))

  • sux but is still cool while it last

  • Does it run out of battery

  • @Carameloace

Yes, the battery runs out of power in a few minutes.

  • Oh thats cute

  • JAJAJ VERY GOOD!!

  • too much weight... if it was lighter, the system could run with grater speed ;D

    but it's awesome!!

pacience highly required to build the dragonfly!!

    good job!

  • it helps if you take a nail and hammer and make a small indent on the positive side

  • @pandemic4tw

That's right; thanks for the hint! (note, just a light tap with the hammer, or it will poke a hole in the battery terminal.)

  • @MrfixitRick yah, haha dont want to have a hole in the battery with that going :D

  • Drunk ass dragonfly

  • i can see it's not on a level base it speeds up at this exact same spot every time then slows down until it gets back to the spot

  • When dragonflies fly like that u know somebody just divided by zero again, hahaha

  • this is very homo!

    hahaha

  • lol it says homo

  • how do you make this?

  • @sikkco

I use a nail as a temporary core and wrap the copper wire around it, then form the wings, eyes, etc.,...all from one continuous piece of wire. The coil touches the neodymium super-magnet on the bottom and completes the circuit, creating a torque that turns and vibrates the dragonfly.

  • Fayul lol

  • I suggest K&J Magnetics for neodymium magnets. There is a link in the "get info" box.

The magnet that works the best for this application is #D99 from K&J. It's 9/16 inch x 9/16 inch in N42 strength.

This project is simple but not easy! The adjustments to the dragonfly's contact wire and spring are tricky, but the end results are worth the trouble.

  • i thought this was easy. the magnet itself is hard to find! gosh ive looked everywhere even malls, there's none!

  • i love your work! do you mind if i remake this as my physics project? please?

  • the others spin really fast. how did you make this slow?

  • Is there a heteropolar motor?

  • @numbnuts234567

I believe the closest thing to a heteropolar motor would be the pulse motor, where a pulsing magnetic coil attracts opposite-poled magnets.

You could say most electric motors are bipolar, because of the commutator which reverses the magnetic fields.

  • HOW YOU MAKE THE BUTTERFLY... i am of spain

  • @1981Dounia

I studied many pictures of butterflies, and watched them in nature.

Then I used 2 metres of wire and wrapped it around a nail held in a vice, as a mandrel. I wrapped the wire around the nail to make the body, leaving four loops for the wings, and also a single loop for the antennas, and 8-10 coils for the spring part.

It is one continuous piece of wire except for cutting the antenna loop to give the two antenna.

    Experiment!

  • lol joe cartoon....look i spinnin! look im spinnin!

  • :o dragon flies spin!?!??!!??!MEH SINCE TEACHER LIED!jk greate demonstration XD

  • IS ALL THIS SHIT REALLY NECESSARY?!?! yes...

  • The art and the science... TOGETHER!!!!!!!!

  • viejo pelotudo pone bien el bicho feo ese!!!!!!!!!!

  • how long can the battery last?

  • @Lev8300 The battery lasts from a minute or two, up to 10 minutes.

  • @MrfixitRick thx man, btw u know whereto get the magnet that this thing works off of? prefrably store not internet cuz i hate to order online lol

  • @Lev8300

You can buy a shake-type flashlight from WalMart and remove the big neo magnet inside.

  • nice one!!

  • @urgencyharviefcem Fusion reactor... free and cool

  • XD O_*

  • NOKNOK

  • Y is it vibrating?

  • to mrfixitrick its do not does

  • Very neat video!

  • @MrfixitRick does you feel that sentence looks right?

  • That's really cool. I might make one.

  • nice but i cant do it !!!!

  • @ashtymen

    Why not?

  • @howard9635 YOU SUCK

  • super ;-)

  • go ahead and make this if u have too much time on your hand

  • thats neat!

  • Very cool! Love it!

  • notice the bottom of the spring around the battery is moving really fast, if you shaped the wire a bit more smoothly you could get that spinning even faster, but I suppose that isn't the aim for this. this is a cool thing to give to an 8 year old or something, they'd love it

  • very creative, i just started making these myself, but i have never seen this level of creativity used on one, great job

  • Is a homopolar synonimous with a gay polar bear? Hey, nothing against gay bears, because that would be Gods job.

    Very creative of you though.

  • @bRadicalmagic1

Here's a couple of pondering questions:

If I loved the gay polar bears with the same unconditional love I had for all the rest of the animals and humans of Creation, would that make me a bad person?

Would the polar bear in question be a bad polar bear?

  • @MrfixitRick are you sure?

  • @bRadicalmagic1 HAHA! nice one!

  • make a working helicopter

  • hey thats a good idea...

  • damn, ?You have alot of time to shape all that copper lol

  • @xXxNavinxXx

It goes quite fast when you know what you are doing. Unfortunately, I don't and it took quite a while!

I was recently commissioned to make 5, but it took three times that many to get 5 good ones. Some were just, well, ugly!!

  • some insects fly a lot faster out of a catapult! haha

  • hhahahahahahhaahahaaaaa...

  • they should have a real life ride version. lol

  • Please Share... There is a Turkish man who has build a " Free Energi Magnetic Motor". This motor never stops and can produce energi without any other energi source like oil, benzin, electricitet, sun energi. This throully is a Tecknologi that can change the world. He presented his motor in Turkish and German Universities.. you can find the Video on Youtube, or Research it or find it on my channal... This is Big. But people dont know about it... Please share this big time.... thank you

  • might go faster if you dent the positive end and have the pointed wire rest inside the indentation

  • poooor thing...must feel dizzy

  • homo... tee hee *runs away gigling

  • waw youre realy bored huh?

    nice

  • dragonfly loves pie

  • i shot a dragon fly with a slingshot once :D very nice video as well XD

  • nice it makes the sound too!

  • Fun fact of the day: Dragon flies eat up to 100 mosquito's per day.

    (semi-off-topic though....)

  • @bananaphonehome

Dragonflies are the fastest and most agile of the insect kingdom as well!!

  • @MrfixitRick not the fastest

  • @kfhfw

    Google "world's fastest insect"

24mph (39 km/h) by the Australian dragonfly. Can you beat that?
