You would think goalies always wore some sort of mask, even if it was a catcher's mask. But no, these guys played bare-faced in front of Jean Beliveau, Bobby Hull, Stan Makita, and Gordie Howe. Nuts!
If you look at Brodeur, Roy and Hasek in their primes, "the dominator" wins in every statistical category except for wins (especially the most important one which i mentioned on the first part, and that's save %).
Chuck Norris is the best hockey goalie and hockey player and i also like oprah Winfrey she is a kick-ass hockey player shes better than Wayne Gretzsky, she is a NFCSAFD,i dont even know what "NFCSAFD" MEANS .... HAHA LOLZ ^_^
only one of them was called the Dominator. Look at Nagano 1998. Hasek shut down the best team in the world. Canada 0 for 5 on breakaways in the shootout.
No he never played a single game in the NHL though im positive he would of been one of the NHL greats, he is the greatest goalie to never play in the NHL. Last I heard he is the goalie coach for an NHL team.
it will be the argument til the end of time. who is better Roy, Brodeur, or Sawchuck. Brodeur is amazing, Roy is the best PLAYOFF performer EVER, Sawchuck......put the equipment on him that goalies where today tell who would come out on top.
@ebtricks Keep in mind the massive year differences. It was harder for goalies back then. They had smaller pads and less protection and had to be quicker and more athletic
@MarkOfTheRebel Yet there were less offensive weapons, slower skaters, worse stick handlers, smaller players (No Chara's), and poor technology, making it easier to goaltend against.
Put Datsyuk, Ovechkin, Gaborik, Kane, Crosby, or Hossa against Dryden, Plate, or Sawchuck and it would be a massacre. They made the pads bigger so that the goalies could attempt to stop the pucks against the talented people of the day.
@MarkOfTheRebel It's almost impossible to argue anyone being much better than Dryden considering his win percentage. However I do think that Patrick Roy was better than Sawchuck. Roy's a real prick, but I do think he is the second best of all time right behind Brodeur. Of course that's just my opinion.
@MarkOfTheRebel You probably should put Glenn Hall in there as well becouse he almost constantly was named better than Sawchuk during their own time. 7-3 in First all-star teams to Hall, with Sawchuk NEVER getting one of those in competition with him: 7-0 Hall there.
Ken Dryden, goalie Montreal Canadiens for 8 seasons, won 6 Stanley Cups and 5 vezinas. Lifetime record 258 wins 57 loses 74 ties. Lifetime G.A.A. 2.24 Ken Dryden retired at age 31
Dryden would be much higher on the list if he had played eight more seasons. The Canadiens would've been top contenders during the dynasties of the Islanders and Oilers of the 1980s. And he might have challenged Terry Sawchuk for the all-time leader in shutouts.
keep in mind though, since sticks have curves now, the puck leaves the ice a LOT more now. My dad played for years without a mask, and has 1 maybe 2 scars on his face to show for it. He even had the old plaster masks, and then a cage mask, and the cage mask did more damage than anything (impact cut to his chin) i've been playing about 5 months and have been hit in the mask countless times...times change.
@JagrJr68 yeah but all the shots never left the ice so unless he tried to nose dive into the puck he wouldnt get hurt too often but it was a litle insane
Give me a break! Roy better than Hasek? The same Roy that Hasek destroyed in the 98 Nagano olympics for gold? The same Roy that was pulled from goal in the worst playoff blowout in history in the WCF game 7, 7 to 0 destruction by the same Hasek in 02? Roy played for two teams. Both filled with NHL stars. Hasek played for the Hawks and Sabers. Both sucked badly. Hasek took a sorry team all the way to the cup in 99 by himself. Roy never did such a thing. Wins don't mean shit! GGA and Vezinas!
I agree no way ed belfour better then grant fuhr or billy smith give me a break! Fuhr won 4 cups and 2 canada cups which is equivalent to olympic hockey today.
In his prime he was the best in the world. Belfour was never best in the world that either went to Roy or Hasek!
lets be honest. who really knew the answer to that trivia question about having the lowest GAA in one season.

Though Jac Plante popularized the mask he wasn't the first one to wear it. It was Clint Benedict.

They neglected to mention an important record held by Glenn Hall.
He played in 502 consecutive games from 1955 to 1962. Let's see any goaltender even TRY to break that record.

Does anybody know if Vladislav Tretiak ever played a game in the NHL? In terms of pure talent, I'd have to put him right up there with Sawchuk

He'd be insane, and he'd be damn near unstoppable.

Thats true
I've been playing for about 9 year now.
i would rather play with a face mask than without.
now the composite stick shoot fast than the wooden ones depending on which one you get.

Ed Belfour??? Sure he was good, but ahead of Bernie Parent, Tony Esposito, Grant Fuhr, Billy Smith and a handful of others I could suggest??????
By the way, re: Parent, this thing says....
"Sadly, his career was short-lived."
His career was short-lived only if you discount his 14 pro (13 NHL, 1 WHA) seasons.
Sheesh
