The records for the climb of L'Alpe d'Huez actually cover just 13.9km of the climb, and Armstrong's time over that section July 21, 2004 was a 37:36, 1 second slower than the late Marco Pantani's record from 1997, and about 30 seconds faster than Armstrong's previous best time (both on road stages).
I don't know about the pharmacist but he was incredible and others who you may think were clean weren't as clean as you might have thought...

Depends on who you're asking... from Wiki:
Other sources give Pantani's times from 1994, 1995 and 1997 as the fastest, based on timings adjusted for the 13.8 km.
Pantani - 1995 - 36m 50s
Pantani - 1997 - 36m 05s
Pantani - 1994 - 37m 15s
Jan Ullrich - 1997 - 37m 30s
Armstrong - 2004 - 37m 36s

I believe Pantani stills holds the record for the fastest ascent up the Alpe D'Huez.

According to Wikipedia, he has the first, second, third and fourth fastest time since 1994, when they started recording the official times.
