Check out her competition and you'll see how totally awesome this is. A lot of jazz violinists sound really corny and can't swing, but she's got the bad-ass vibe and the technique to back it up. Oooh! she just broke a hair on her bow :)
Regina Carter's beginning is a mannerism, I really don't like. She knows very well, thats not the tone, but she wants to get the listeners attention, well doesn't she already have it ? Some singers do the same. Doesn't serve as good signature. Compare with L. Subramaniam who is doing the glissando a lot but he delivers the end notes.
@Littlewhitelephant she doesn't resolve those first couple notes but then resolves the longest one in the beginning which I find very enjoyable, not a "bad" signature at all.

@akilah49 i am EXTREMELY jealous!! i love her so much. so incredibly mellow and smooth. i found jazz and blues through her, and i now know that alongside gypsy, i want to play jazz on my violin. such a beautiful and amazing woman. listening to mood indigo and it sounds like reverse acapello!!! gorgeous. i love her.
WOW. This is astounding. It seems that new doors to violin music are opened to me daily. It never ends (thank goodness). Now, thanks to Ms. Carter, I've discovered Jazz violin. Her virtuosity actually made my eyes tear, and I'm 5x yrs old. Thank you so much Ms. Carter to opening my eyes (and ears). Fantastic!
I am experimentng w/electric vs. amped up acoustic. Very similar. See a lot of electric with Zydeco music, which I do quite a bit of. But there are not many electric violins that have the quality an amped up acoustic has. I'll keep experimenting. I'll probably wind up using both. I think maybe the electric will be good for rock/r&b. Anywone here have an opinioin?
@karpdiem2 I use a barbera transducer system on my custom electric fiddle. sounds amazing. The basic sound from the pick ups is so clean, and is very well balanced unlike some others. I play that for rock/blues (run through some pedals) and some jazz.. I still have my acoustic, and use an AMT mic for that. Nothing really beats the miced acoustic sound.
Actually that's a L R Baggs pick up that she's using. The Barcus Berry fits into the small aperture on the side of the bridge whereas the Baggs has a small piezo mic fitted into the bridge, very good quality better than the berry if you like the true sound of the fiddle....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Absolutely terrible....... Consistently flat on note, unable to drift-bridge - a basic requisite. Strokes are many times static and interupt potential flow.
Dare to listen to Motor City moments, Paganini: after a dream, Ill be seeing you: a sentimental jorney, freefall, or any other album and I'm sure your mind will change about one of the most talented jazz violin player ;-)
She's so cool, A real swinger like Stuff Smith. I've been looking at other violinists on you tube for inspiration but none of them seem to have the swing that she has. Can anyone recomend an album of hers?
Yes, she CAN PLAY the violin, indeed. Wonderful, swinging, and inventive. And Ray's bass sounded great also. Great trio, but that's what one would expect from the bassist that backed Oscar Peterson for so many years. He knows!!
Great Playing! That is not an electric violin..its an acoustic with a pick-up and for those that don't know..Violin actually predates Saxophone as a voice in Jazz.Thank God for Stuff Smith...who many give credit for adapting a microphone for string instruments ..like Guitar!
nice smooth sliding technique. I never really thought an electric violin had much soul to it though. Its tone quality never really hit it off for me when it comes to jazz.
as a jazz violinist myself, I'm not the biggest fan of Regina Carter's jazz vocabulary. It sounds very cliche to me! But I'll tell you one thing, she can swing her ass off. Feel is just as important as the notes when it comes to jazz, probably more important actually. Which is probably why, a lot of people like her. And she's a great violinist and gets great sound.
Also, check out my page for some more jazz-violin videos of my compositions at Berklee
Technique is important, but it should only be a tool. Jazz is a language. And like other languages, it is hard to master.
We find violinists playing jazz, and we find jazzmusicians playing the violin. To me,the approach really makes a difference.
Playing the violin is extraordinary difficult, but basically, once the musician has reached a certain technical level, it is just an instrument used to speak the jazz-language, making it no different than trumpets, saxophones etc. Stuff spoke it!!!
Since I don't believe in re-incarnation, the conclusion is that Regina studied Stuff Smith's techniques to the fullest extent. Over 67000 viewings? Wow! Regina is a delight for jazz fiddle lovers.
Wow! I didn't know about Stuff...I typed his name in to youtube and I was amazed...I think you're right. She is good but compared to him she sounds more technical.
Stuff was born Hezekiah Leroy Gordon Smith, used the word "stuff" often in conversation, eventually was nicknamed. I have fair amount of his recordings, they're all on vinyl. Gotta learn how to convert analog to digital because I miss listening to his work. Its so good to know that others are interested in jazz violin. Its surreal about Regina because she has mastered his technique to the ultimate.
Wow. To be honest I didn't know that had happened. I feel really stupid now. Well that could be the case. In all truthfulness I think she's an excellent player but I just don't like her style. It's cool that everyone has their own ideas though. That could cause reason for some conflict among thoughts though yeah I agree on that.
Hey I thought we were done here. And I'd like you to show me where I said I could play better than her please. Even though that may indeed be true I don't think I said that. There are plenty of musicians that are better than her too. Jazz is a big word (many variations/opinions). But you can't say that she isn't a good violinist and a pro. Anyway, it's against union regulations to put down a fellow pro.

Why don't you stop lying your ass off I never heard or got the music for the tune so you can stop being so mean about everything. I honestly don't even care what you think anymore, I found a great bass player and an amazing steel player to play with so you can leave me alone forever. Don't bother writing back, I have no business with you.
well the only version I have of it is the Real Book version of it which just has the chords written for the B Section, I assume the B section is some improvisational run?
Haha. No, no don't get me wrong I can't wait to learn it, my parents just don't like purchasing things off the web and since I'm credit card-less my options are limited. As SOON as I get the music though I'll let you know and then I'll gladly learn it and put my video up. Sorry for the delay...
I'm trying to find the book. Can you believe I've searched 57 music stores in Nashville, and everyone KNOWS the book, but no one HAS it. I guess I could find a recording of it and learn it from that.
Thank you for sharing. Regina Carter is a serious talent. Sheila Johnson (co-founder of BET) allowed Regina Carter to use her plane to ship her violin somewhere in Europe last year. Sweet! Glad to see the support of violinists!

Good player, but I don't like the sound of her mic's. Kinda makes her violin sound cheap...

They let her play on Paganini's violin; she's good.
