  • Hot damn... I want to play like her.

  • plain and simple WOW!

  • It swings like hell. they are second to none. guitarman

  • I learned about her on wensday by my violin teacher David Shultz

  • Check out her competition and you'll see how totally awesome this is. A lot of jazz violinists sound really corny and can't swing, but she's got the bad-ass vibe and the technique to back it up. Oooh! she just broke a hair on her bow :)

  • I have heard the best - Joe Venuti, Stephan Grappelli, Eddie South, Stuff Smith, and this young lady is the best of the best.

  • ray brown is the real swing

  • My mom is her agent

  • @polarpanda246 Really? That's kinda cool!

  • Very nice

  • as much as a i love jazz, i can NEVER enjoy violin jazz. it's not smooth and relaxing, too tense and alskmd

  • @blkbeltmage did you ever heard Grappelli?or Venuti?hear them and we will discuss about!

  • Lady is really good.

    LIVE JUNE 22, 2011 FREE @ MILLENNIUM PAK , CHICAGO W/ SYMPHONY 6:30 PM

  • OOh! ShiiEt!! ThAt Womman Fire ThAt StAgE! gOsH! lOvE hEr!

  • Regina Carter's beginning is a mannerism, I really don't like. She knows very well, thats not the tone, but she wants to get the listeners attention, well doesn't she already have it ? Some singers do the same. Doesn't serve as good signature. Compare with L. Subramaniam who is doing the glissando a lot but he delivers the end notes.

  • @Littlewhitelephant she doesn't resolve those first couple notes but then resolves the longest one in the beginning which I find very enjoyable, not a "bad" signature at all.

  • Молодец!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's not you - she is just trying to play really cool :-)))

  • One of the best jazz violinists ever! For an eclectic mix of VIOLIN favorites -- jazz to blues to bluegrass to salsa to a blend of reggae and Polish mountain music to many other genres you've probably never imagined, check out my YouTube channel in blue to the left below. • @rachel237linda this is jazz.. I guess we can sort of accept that. although it can get a bit annoying at times.

  • @rachel237linda definitely, but I really like it- makes a unique sound....

  • @rachel237linda That's what makes it so cool :)

  • Wow, she is amazing. The guys in the back aren't bad either :)

  • Wow, she is amazing.

  • Saw her in concert in a small bistro. She is superb and so humble.

  • @akilah49 i am EXTREMELY jealous!! i love her so much. so incredibly mellow and smooth. i found jazz and blues through her, and i now know that alongside gypsy, i want to play jazz on my violin. such a beautiful and amazing woman. listening to mood indigo and it sounds like reverse acapello!!! gorgeous. i love her.

  • WOW. This is astounding. It seems that new doors to violin music are opened to me daily. It never ends (thank goodness). Now, thanks to Ms. Carter, I've discovered Jazz violin. Her virtuosity actually made my eyes tear, and I'm 5x yrs old. Thank you so much Ms. Carter to opening my eyes (and ears). Fantastic!

    Bravo!!!

  • very good..........

  • que buenos son felicidades

  • awesome...

  • Wonderful. Hard to believe that Ray was less than two years from the end of his life here. What a loss!

  • Regina is brilliant!!! Such wonderful phrasing, rhythm and inventive improvisation!!

    Thanks for this video.

  • The violin in the hands of someone like Regina is so very beautiful to listen to.Thanks for sharing.

  • thanks for the info on stuff smith & his adaptation of mic to violin. wasn't aware of that.....you learn something new every day!

  • I am experimentng w/electric vs. amped up acoustic. Very similar. See a lot of electric with Zydeco music, which I do quite a bit of. But there are not many electric violins that have the quality an amped up acoustic has. I'll keep experimenting. I'll probably wind up using both. I think maybe the electric will be good for rock/r&b. Anywone here have an opinioin?

  • @karpdiem2 I use a barbera transducer system on my custom electric fiddle. sounds amazing. The basic sound from the pick ups is so clean, and is very well balanced unlike some others. I play that for rock/blues (run through some pedals) and some jazz.. I still have my acoustic, and use an AMT mic for that. Nothing really beats the miced acoustic sound.

  • 3:26 Can someone show me how this is played plz!!!!!????

  • I'm a bit of a jazz-violin player myself,

and I think I just found my Idol... <3

  • the best version of this classic I've ever heard!

  • What a great performance!

  • incredibil de bine....fantastic !

  • Wow, I've seen Regina Carter in concert and she is out of this world. I love her sound.

  • Lov this woman... when is she coming to australia?

  • feelings +soul+ passion+ jazz = great music

  • she is amazing

  • wow I've never tried to play jazz on violin it's awesome

  • I once asked my band teacher what kind of music he liked. He said, "Anything that is played well." I think he was talking about this.

  • Love the clever violin technique of running flat for that special flavour.

    Unique and wonderful musician.

  • Can't play my ass

  • she has a fantastic vibrato!

  • This was really nice to hear. Regina is a amazing violinist.

  • Regina plays so great. I fell in love with her sound.

  • Love the slides

  • This girl just sang on a a violin...damn.

  • This is hot!!!!!! I love her!

  • Is this improv or an actual piece?

  • @upperstringlover710 It's "Lady Be Good" by Gershwin.

  • so you're kinda dumb...

  • Actually that's a L R Baggs pick up that she's using. The Barcus Berry fits into the small aperture on the side of the bridge whereas the Baggs has a small piezo mic fitted into the bridge, very good quality better than the berry if you like the true sound of the fiddle....

  • Very nice. Shes got a very good feel you jazz, she makes me feel like I should stop playing classical violin and get into jazz.

  • Play both of them. They are great!

  • me too!

  • Fantasztikus!!!

  • that my uncle on the piano he's so good....must have got it from me..just kiddin.

  • what kind of amplification is she using?

  • Awesome!!!!

  • She's very talented.

    she's one of my idols

becuase I'm learning to play and

    she's realy good,

so I wanna be like her.

  • You can definately here the Grappelli in her playing.

  • I gotta say - that is an absolutely insanely awesomely and brilliantly wonderful swinging piano solo...love it!

And it's clear Ray loves it too - imagine how amazing it must feel to have Ray Brown shouting 'Oh yeah' in your solo (4:07)!

  • Is there a DVD out of this complete gig? I must have a copy please.

  • eso es swing y no mamadas.

  • amazing.

  • u mean prerequisite?

  • how can it be wrong if it sounds so good?

  • Dare to listen to Motor City moments, Paganini: after a dream, Ill be seeing you: a sentimental jorney, freefall, or any other album and I'm sure your mind will change about one of the most talented jazz violin player ;-)

  • Well, Regina is a very talented BLACK jazz violinist.

    You cant disagree with that.

  • Wow she is wonderful!

  • man im so glad ive gotten to play with her twice

  • I would listen to her all day if it could be possible. That swing feeling is a rare appearance in nowadays, but she has got it. :)

  • Awesome!

  • Sensacional! Gostaria estar presente nesta platéia! Regina Carter, a musa do violino !

Ao ouví-la pela manhã, tudo me parece em paz.

    bjos.

  • I first saw Regina about 10 years ago at a Bay Area Jazz Festival. She's one of the reasons I fell in love with this music. Go Regina!

  • very good violinist.

  • yeah... she can swing! she knows everything bout jazz, absolutely more than others "jazz" musicians...!

  • James Carter is the 'brother' that redhouse 7 refers to, but it is her cousin. James is a world renowned saxophonist.

  • She's so cool, A real swinger like Stuff Smith. I've been looking at other violinists on you tube for inspiration but none of them seem to have the swing that she has. Can anyone recomend an album of hers?

  • Well, one that I would HIGHLY recommend is the one she recorded on Niccolai Paganini's violin. AMAZING.

  • now thats some serious cookin'

  • That is an awesome piano solo by Larry Fuller. I love Ray's vocal approval at 4:08.

Imagine Ray Brown saying 'Oh yes!' halfway through your solo!

  • I saw Regina Carter last night (7/10/09) at the Stanford Jazz Festival. She was nothing short of magnificent! She is a Master in our mist!

  • I could listen to Regina Carter all day.

  • Brilliant !

  • both her and her brother are great!

  • Awesome.

  • Beautiful film

  • Wow, she's such a melodic player! Beautiful stuff!

  • Yes, she CAN PLAY the violin, indeed. Wonderful, swinging, and inventive. And Ray's bass sounded great also. Great trio, but that's what one would expect from the bassist that backed Oscar Peterson for so many years. He knows!!

  • Wow!

  • very sweet and byebye andr923

  • Great Playing! That is not an electric violin..its an acoustic with a pick-up and for those that don't know..Violin actually predates Saxophone as a voice in Jazz.Thank God for Stuff Smith...who many give credit for adapting a microphone for string instruments ..like Guitar!

  • @Fiiidla Great info - thanks! (One of my favorite videos. And Larry Fuller isn't bad either!)

  • nice smooth sliding technique. I never really thought an electric violin had much soul to it though. Its tone quality never really hit it off for me when it comes to jazz.

  • But that's not an electric violin! It's just a regula one with a mic

  • She has put on a pile of weight since then.

  • wow man, he sound reminds me of stuff smith. incredible.

  • This is nice and mellow. Very enjoyable. Nice classic jazz sound; great Ray Brown sound.

  • She is OK, but listen to anything recorded by Michal Urbaniak! Please! Thats Jazz & Fusion Violin playing!!

  • as a jazz violinist myself, I'm not the biggest fan of Regina Carter's jazz vocabulary. It sounds very cliche to me! But I'll tell you one thing, she can swing her ass off. Feel is just as important as the notes when it comes to jazz, probably more important actually. Which is probably why, a lot of people like her. And she's a great violinist and gets great sound.

Also, check out my page for some more jazz-violin videos of my compositions at Berklee

  • Lots of people have a huge vocabulary, but it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing-I'll take the swing any day.

  • Hey send me an address for your Videos...Andr923

  • es una maestra del jazz, de lo mejor

    felicitaciones

  • simplemente espectacular

de lo mejor que he escuchado

  • Man, sometimes she makes it sound like it's singing. Jeeze

  • Technique is important, but it should only be a tool. Jazz is a language. And like other languages, it is hard to master.

We find violinists playing jazz, and we find jazzmusicians playing the violin. To me,the approach really makes a difference.

Playing the violin is extraordinary difficult, but basically, once the musician has reached a certain technical level, it is just an instrument used to speak the jazz-language, making it no different than trumpets, saxophones etc. Stuff spoke it!!!

  • Since I don't believe in re-incarnation, the conclusion is that Regina studied Stuff Smith's techniques to the fullest extent. Over 67000 viewings? Wow! Regina is a delight for jazz fiddle lovers.

  • Wow! I didn't know about Stuff...I typed his name in to youtube and I was amazed...I think you're right. She is good but compared to him she sounds more technical.

  • Stuff was born Hezekiah Leroy Gordon Smith, used the word "stuff" often in conversation, eventually was nicknamed. I have fair amount of his recordings, they're all on vinyl. Gotta learn how to convert analog to digital because I miss listening to his work. Its so good to know that others are interested in jazz violin. Its surreal about Regina because she has mastered his technique to the ultimate.

  • THATS MY COUSIN REGINA CARTER

  • same to you pal.

  • Wow. To be honest I didn't know that had happened. I feel really stupid now. Well that could be the case. In all truthfulness I think she's an excellent player but I just don't like her style. It's cool that everyone has their own ideas though. That could cause reason for some conflict among thoughts though yeah I agree on that.

  • Hey I thought we were done here. And I'd like you to show me where I said I could play better than her please. Even though that may indeed be true I don't think I said that. There are plenty of musicians that are better than her too. I don't know who you are or why you think you need to jump up and hit somebody every time they say that they don't like how she plays but you really should learn to accept that other people don't necessarily enjoy hearing her play. There's nothing wrong with that.

  • May I suggest Kristian Jorgensen?

  • Please check the latest responses and video suggestion. Also check out Daniel Tringov jazz violin, to see in my opinion a good violinist that has no clue on how to play jazz. The jazz violinist in Gamelon is my friend and I think he's great. Check him out to.

  • Geoff Perry is his name and it's Gamalon (I misspelled it previously) Great jazz fusion violin!

  • ok that's why she got a McAruther grant.

I guess it's only natural to be jealous of a genius so recognized that she has to be awarded a million dollars.

    hahaha

  • what the heck? Is this video attracting Regina haters or lovers?

I personally AM IN FUCKING LOVE WITH HER!!!!

And if she commands attention enough to bring out her haters I suppose she can't be doing all that bad.

  • Check out the following video for a real interesting violin/compositional performance:

Eileen Ivers, Nadja Salerno Sonnenberg, Regina Carter 2002

    I thought it was great!

  • It is true that there are great musicians/artists/etc. out there, that don't get the fame and credit that they deserve. She has an audience appeal that sells tickets. Entertainment is about business more than promoting the best. Anyway, you could never find the best because there is always someone better (matter of opinion). Jazz is a big word (many variations/opinions). But you can't say that she isn't a good violinist and a pro. Anyway, it's against union regulations to put down a fellow pro.

  • Well! You have to know the style that she is playin. She is the real thing, and it comes from the heart. Sometimes less is more, any true jazz musician knows that! Bravo to you gal, commin from a real pro! She is just fine!

  • just enjoy the music

  • great player - unplug the violin

  • Good thing I don't believe in reincarnation. Regina has mastered the Stuff Smith technique to it's utmost. Old Stuff lives on every time Regina plays, and does she ever!

  • ok, im in love.

  • It's unfortunate when sniping distracts from this kind of sweet swinging Jazz. Regina Carter ROCKS Hardcore!!!

  • Why don't you stop lying your ass off I never heard or got the music for the tune so you can stop being so mean about everything. I honestly don't even care what you think anymore, I found a great bass player and an amazing steel player to play with so you can leave me alone forever. Don't bother writing back, I have no business with you.

  • well the only version I have of it is the Real Book version of it which just has the chords written for the B Section, I assume the B section is some improvisational run?

  • I can take care of Donna Lee tomorrow if you want.

  • Haha. No, no don't get me wrong I can't wait to learn it, my parents just don't like purchasing things off the web and since I'm credit card-less my options are limited. As SOON as I get the music though I'll let you know and then I'll gladly learn it and put my video up. Sorry for the delay...

  • I'm trying to find the book. Can you believe I've searched 57 music stores in Nashville, and everyone KNOWS the book, but no one HAS it. I guess I could find a recording of it and learn it from that.

  • wow. What a good liar you are.

  • Thank you for sharing. Regina Carter is a serious talent. Sheila Johnson (co-founder of BET) allowed Regina Carter to use her plane to ship her violin somewhere in Europe last year. Sweet! Glad to see the support of violinists!

  • i am a bass player and i love jazz and ray brown

  • Good player, but I don't like the sound of her mic's. Kinda makes her violin sound cheap...

  • They let her play on Paganini's violin; she's good.

  • AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!
