Breath-taking beauty, from the Fab Five. Austin City Limits circa 1990, I think it was. I saw this show and ran out to get the CD. Thank you for posting
One time at the lodge at the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite, the piano player busted this out and I recognized it in about 10 notes. I walked over, reeling, after it was over and said, "One Winter's Night by Strength in Numbers, I can't believe I'm hearing this, do you know anything else from the record?". He gasped in surprise that someone would recognize a tune from a 20 year old record that maybe sold 100,000 copies and proceeded to play about three more tunes he'd arranged. I tipped 20 bucks
At the first snow every year, I post this on Facebook. Beautiful sound, graceful movements by the players. It's a moment of peace: full moon shining on a pristine snow bank somewhere far away. Snowy Eden, if you will. If I could, I'd marry all four these guys.
@nmfarlow : Mahogany RQ Jones, it is probably the most legendary Dobro in existence. Jerry retired it and it is now on display in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
I recall seeing them play at the 17th Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 1991. Unforgettable, the whole festival, and Strength in Numbers was a highlight.
I saw mark o'conner, edgar meyer and chris thile perform this piece a few months ago at Carnegie Hall in NY. One of the most amazing performances I've ever experienced. It was such a treat because Strength In Numbers hasn't existed in so long, I never thought I would hear any of their stuff live.
this is musicians getting together to make music. It's influenced by just about everything. that's the great thing about the fluidity of music, if you've studied music enough all these things you've heard just come to the surface when you play and you get gems like this.
everyone knows that bela fleck is the one holding down the tempo on the guitar? that was the most amazing thing to me about this peice. "this is the most beautiful song that i have evefr heard."
This is my favorite song ever. I first heard it on a friend's borrowed CD (The Telluride Sessions), and it nearly brought me to tears. Thank you so much for posting the video!
This is probably my favorite recording of all time. It sits at the top of my iTunes playlist, far ahead of the 2nd place song, which is also by Strength in Numbers. Thanks for posting this Austin City Limits broadcast, which I own on VHS, but I don't have a VCR anymore.
It's funny. I live in Austin, but can't get tickets to Austin City Limits to save my life! I wish I could have been here. It does sound like a "winter night" gorgeous...

This has got the sound quality the song deserves. Absolutely IN-YO-FACE beautiful.Great performance, too.
BTW the CD (Strength In Numbers) features each musician writing a song with each of the others, 10 combinations, 10 songs. Not to be missed.

The CD, The Telluride Sessions, by Strength in Numbers credits Edgar Meyer and Mark O'Connor as the writers of One Winter's Night.

They all are (from another planet).
These are the virtuosos of their respective instruments.
The sweetness they wring out of those strings knifes right to the heart.
