Funny. It's been my experience that governors of densely populated states are usually moderate as hell. Don't get me wrong, party is still party but I think they tend to be more toward the center than federal officers.
Ultimately, this isn't really a win for the GOP because the walls of the 23rd District's 152yo Jericho just came tumbling down. Besides, Steele has no biz taking a "victory lap" because he wasn't in on any of those campaigns. What an idiot he is.
New Jersey and Virginia traditionally elect governors from the opposite party as the president. These are just continuing traditions. In New York's 23rd that was a broken tradition.

The American electorate seems to be going similar to the British in 1997 when years of a very hard line conservative government were defeated by New Labour who were very modern and centrist. Hell, Barack basically modelled his campaign on Tony Blair and some of his speeches were eerily similar. I think the american voters are moving more into the centre on most issues and the Republican party are still trying to cling on to that right wing support when the rest of the country has moved on.
Well, Steele can do his victory dance if he wants. But in time the more he clowns around the more his own base is going to call for him to shape up or ship out. Which has already happened twice so far.
The radical right of the Republican sees a moderate Republican win as the same as a Democratic win. They have no interest in promoting moderate candidates. In Virginia, it's not unusual for people to vote different parties in local vs national elections. That's why we so often have a governor of the opposite party as the president. Locally (state level) I think Virginians tend to vote more for the person than the party.

Funny. It's been my experience that governors of densely populated states are usually moderate as hell. Don't get me wrong, party is still party but I think they tend to be more toward the center than federal officers.
Ultimately, this isn't really a win for the GOP because the walls of the 23rd District's 152yo Jericho just came tumbling down. Besides, Steele has no biz taking a "victory lap" because he wasn't in on any of those campaigns. What an idiot he is.

New Jersey and Virginia traditionally elect governors from the opposite party as the president. These are just continuing traditions. In New York's 23rd that was a broken tradition.

The American electorate seems to be going similar to the British in 1997 when years of a very hard line conservative government were defeated by New Labour who were very modern and centrist. Hell, Barack basically modelled his campaign on Tony Blair and some of his speeches were eerily similar. I think the american voters are moving more into the centre on most issues and the Republican party are still trying to cling on to that right wing support when the rest of the country has moved on.

The radical right of the Republican sees a moderate Republican win as the same as a Democratic win. They have no interest in promoting moderate candidates. They believe they can play up Obama's negatives and have the radical right retake control of the country. Any moderate Republican office holders are seen as a liability and impediment to the radical right.

Give it a few months and Rush will be blasting the radical liberal agenda of the governorships in New Jersey and Virginia. For God's sake, Palin doesn't think Olympia Snowe is conservative enough. i'm not too familiar with the candidates. generally, when i hate moderate in reference to a GOP member, I usually think more fiscally conservative and more liberal towards social issues. is that the case in those governorships?

In Virginia, it's not unusual for people to vote different parties in local vs national elections. That's why we so often have a governor of the opposite party as the president. Locally (state level) I think Virginians tend to vote more for the person than the party.

Why don't you talk about your thoughts on New Jersey? That's where I live and if I could've voted (I'm 17), I probably would've voted for Christie. I don't like many of his positions, but in this case it's the lesser of two evils, because we gave Corzine a chance, and that didn't go well. This coming from someone who agrees with democrats on most issues. I wouldn't have voted against the democrats, just voted against Corzine.

State politics is an entirely different animal than National politics, for better or for worse. Governors don't prove a damn thing, Cali has Arnold as a governor and they consistently voted Democrat in presidential campaigns since 1992.

i dont think you should underestimate the power of perception and media influence in what constitutes a "win" or "loss" -- you may have a terrific argument about why those wins for republicans dont matter and why the win for the dems in the 23rd does, but if you dont hammer it home every time, theyre going to win on perception, cuz all they have to say it that they won more.
and if they win on perception, it might turn the fair-weather republicans back toward the party.. so you dont want that.
