The point is that someone somewhere is thinking in a nuanced way about the problems US and the rest of the world face. Iraq and foreign affairs in general are not simple problems, that can be answered instantly by appealing to patriotism or to US self-interests. If you want to make the world a better place and want to adhere to the Four Freedoms, you are in for the long haul and you need to create long lasting relationships with other countries. To do this, we need Obama as soon as possible.

Obama's new world order view is idealistic. We Americans think we can change the way people of other nations see us. It may NOT be something we can change; there are agendas out there that play out independent of ours. What is clear is that the Bush administration did not help things. The reality is Obama may be forced to do many of the things his predecesors did. It will be an interesting experiment. Let's hope Obama doesn't become just another politician with unfulfilled promises.

Samantha Powers in a true head-in-the-clouds idealist. She speaks of getting out of Iraq in a matter of months when the Iraqis, by any objective analysis, including their own, need years. This would cause a massive bloodbath and the loss of Iraq that would make her "refugee plan" an incredibly sick joke. It would also cost the US its credibility around the world.

Nobody wants to be in Iraq forever, but the majority of Iraqis want us there for now. The bloodshed has been less than the average under Saddam, so the invasion has actually saved lives. The US has a lot of credibility with the Iraqis and around the world because it is there; it wouldn't have any if it gave up a nascent democracy to the terrorists, who are losing (and losing credibility) big-time. The US shouldn't care what the anti-American brainwashed thinks.

This means that 62% want us there for now, and the poll way oversampled Sunnis, Saddam's favored old buddies. Your point on deaths is absurd: less deaths is GOOD, and the Iraqis are overjoyed that Saddam is dead. Al-Qaida, the reason for maybe 90% of the civilian deaths, is hated there, and you would force a defeat and abandon the populace to terrorists. So who's brainwashed and myopic?
