This is my favourite drumming video. The ultimate balance of a display of amazing skills and the ability to feel and play the kind of awesome sounding beats that anyone, no matter how much or little drumming, or musical for that matter, experience, will totally appreciate. I think there's only one part where his desire to show off compromises the purity of what he is playing ever so slightly, but hey no one is perfect.
Does anyone know the sticking to the part he does at 3:22? Or at least closely know the sticking. I'm just in shock and awe watching/listening to this that I can't figure it out! lol
@glaciusinferno Hmm, it seems REALLY fast and this video is 240p so the quality isn't the best but it could be quintuplets with double kicks on each crash hit. So like RllrlRlrrlR and repeating. (capitals being cymbal hits) Or some sort of paradiddle because he also hits some crashes with his left hand. Possibly RlrrLrllR and so on. He's also hitting the floor tom occasionally after a snare hit during the doubles with the right hand. Crazy stuff.
I have a playlist with the top 10 drumsolos on youtube, according to me. This is permanantly top 3, quite often no 1... In competition with Mangini and Royster Jr
@twjewett Greb isn't better or badder than Gadd: like you say, they are from a different generation. Probably, Gadd is an idol for Greb, but Steve would also admire his younger colleague. How later in time, how better musicians are, because the gear is better, there are a lot of more examples en YouTube makes that each drummer in the world can watch hundreds of brilliant drummers and percussionists. However, it's impossible to compare two drummers, sporters, scientists... of an other generation.
@VanLoyful I think young musicians today have some incredible advantages. The accessibility of nearly every genre of music in digital form (e.g. MP3) basically for free is very important. I have friends that have music collections equally tens of thousands of albums. Their tastes span multiple genres, and in general the ones that are serious about music are very discerning. Easy access to sheet music, or tab is an advantage as well. Inexpensive multi-track recording technology is a big plus.
Somebody please tell me that this guy is a complete loaner and has nowhere to go and nothing to do all day but sit in his room (10 hrs per day) and play the drums.
I'm not a drummer, but I've played several musical instruments. Even one who doesn't intimately know the drums can see the technique on display here. However, what I find even more interesting is his composition. I'll be honest. The majority of drum solos bore me. The only ones that interest me can (to a certain degree) stand up as enjoyable pieces of music on their own. I hear that in Greb's soloing. Awesome stuff.
I love nothing more than the contrasting feeling of flipping over to sticks after drumming with your hands. Apart of course from watching Grebb do it.
@Antiks72 yeah man, the whole skinny white German thing was a joke, I really don't think your race matters as a musician. The German part is interesting though, you don't see a lot of German drummers with his grasp of an American style. Annnnd here come the comments of every German funk and jazz drummer :)
@onejordangerous he is playing relaxed in his dvd he taljs about how he drums the way he breathes, plays what he wants to play whenever he wants to play it
sonor drums have that odd, but realy cool songs! like in this one when he hit that one snare! its just like the thomas lang solo..the one with the sonor..not dw..its at o:17

I guess you guys aren't ready for that, yet. But your kids are gonna love it.
