Any Hillary supporter who is even considering supporting John McCain simply because Sara Palin is on the ticket needs to take a good hard look at themselves in the mirror. Supporting John McCain would be a direct repudiation of everything Hillary Clinton worked so hard for, not only in her own campaign, but through her entire career in public life. The nomination of Sarah Palin is an insult and a slap in the face to every American citizen. She was chosen for two reasons: One, McCain wanted a media cycle after a successful Dem convention. Two, because she is a woman, and the Republicans think that women are stupid and will vote for someone based solely on whether or not a candidate shares their XX chromosone. I think Palin was just being a little "snarky" because of people belittle her mayoral position. You know... Contrasting a community organizer with a mayor to highlight the stupidity of the argument on both sides.
I mean... Hitler was a community organizer... So what? Doesn't make his ideas right. Being a community organizer doesn't mean Obama should be compared to Jesus or Martin Luther King Jr either...

I'm actually a Libertarian that will be voting for Obama... And it wasn't a comparison of Obama TO Hitler. I was saying a community organizer means NOTHING in and of itself. Just saying the comparison to Jesus and Martin Luther King simply because one is a community organizer IS over the top... and that I THINK Palin was simply poking fun at the comparison... As I recall.. The statement was for laughs, wasn't it? Maybe it's just because I didn't perceive it as an attack on community organizers.
I saw it as a belittling of community organization and the skills inherent in being successful as a community organizer. To say that one occupation involves responsibility where the other does not (which is what she said) is - well, it's just ridiculous. AND it has the bonus of being mean.
Was I saying that Obama is Jesus? Nope. I'm merely highlighting that community organizers are important and they do have responsibility. To indicate otherwise, which she did, is just demeaning and untrue.
She didn't call herself a community organizer; she said "being a mayor was like one, but you have responsibilities." She was mocking them, just as Giuliani had earlier in the night.
There are two reasons to use mockery in a persuasive argument: because you don't have the ability to make a more thoughtful argument, or you don't think your audience has the ability to understand a more thoughtful argument.
I'm not sure which of those things applies to Palin. Probably the latter.
I notice that you don't address what I actually said in the video. I didn't say anythign about PTA or small towns. So - do you have anything substantive or knowledgeable to say about what I recorded?

That term can refer to anybody, anywhere, uncontrained by time. Obie's community was a group of people in one geographical space at one time (the original definition of "community"). Susan B Anthony was no more a community ogranizer in the Obie sense than was Yoda. And ML King--"looked out over the community of Americans...." meaning "nation," not community.

Good point about the Coast Guard, too bad the National Guard can be Federalized and sent over sees now days. There has been plenty of terror attacks since 2001, Afghanistan, Iraq, and now Pakistan, where Earlier this month, US commandos landed helicopter gunships in another Pakistani village and opened fire on a compound, killing twenty people. Last month 92 civilians were killed. In modern warfare civilians now die 10 to 1 as apposed to 1 to 10 in WW1.

A community organizer is ANY person who organizes a group of individuals with some common interest in a collective fashion to give them a political voice. In the case of Susan B. Anthony, ABSOLUTELY. That coin does flip both ways, though - some organized communities are bad ones. Tried to use a long cotton sheet and a baby, to hide the pregnant belly of her teenage daughter the first day, and when got caught, introduced that 18 year old boy to the nation who only had fun-sex with her daughter, & on top of that, socially forcing him to marry her. McCain (in crush is blind) was shaking hands with that boy apologizing him about the media offense against their privacy, & encouraging all the teens to do the same.

They have raised our debt by 300%, they have increased government by 40%, they have encroached on personal liberties and they have raised taxes on the American people. All of this is the exact opposite of the republican platform. I feel bad for all the "conservatives" that don't realize it.

Any Hillary supporter who is even considering supporting John McCain simply because Sara Palin is on the ticket needs to take a good hard look at themselves in the mirror. Supporting John McCain would be a direct repudiation of everything Hillary Clinton worked so hard for, not only in her own campaign, but through her entire career in public life. Sour grapes and resentment would only lead to further setting back a pro-woman's agenda, and that's exactly what a vote for Sara Palin would do.

And, and I'm sorry to bring this up but I think it says something, Palin is a woman who preaches abstinence only sex-education and would favor restrictions, if not all-out bans, on birth control and other contraceptives, yet at the same time has a 17 year old daughter who is five months pregnant...proof that abstinence only education doesn't work in the real world. Maybe if Palin wasn't such an ideologue about restricting birth-control, she wouldn't be a 44 year old Grandma-in-waiting.

Sara Palin is no doubt a woman who has had to take on the good old boys in Alaska to not only be elected but be effective as the state's governor, but when it comes down to issues women should care about, Palin is not only wrong, but far from the mainstream. On the issues of a woman's right of choice, she wants to restrict abortion access to women who are victims of rape and incest. She doesn't support equal pay for equal work, effectively saying that women are less valuable and beneath men.

Well said. Barack Obama was a community organizer for three years out of college. As a young graduate, someone saddled with student loan debt who could have gone on to work for big business making six figures a year, he chose to roll up his sleeves and work to improve the lives of people less fortunate. That is character. It's the same kind of character McCain loves to espouse he learned while a POW in Vietnam.

Community organizers have NO responsibility to the American people ONLY to the people they are organizing and that stands for less then the qualities of an actual mayor. Further, her statement was this: that a community organizer is "kind of" like a small town mayor, only a mayor has "actual responsibilities". So parse that - if a mayor has actual responsibilities, by implication the community organizer does NOT. It WAS offensive and very intentionally so. But I do appreciate that your comment was respectful.

Ok, I will concede that her comment is offensive to Obama supporters. Similarly, Obama has hurled unfounded attacks himself, so I can relate.
Obama on what McCain said about him: "You know, he's not patriotic enough, he's got a funny name, you know, he doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."
There is only one problem: McCain never said any of this. It was playing the race card and I remember how offended it made me that Obama would make such an unprovoked attack.

While you and I are kind of talking about the same thing, I think I'm seeing it differently. My problem with the community organizer comment was that it brought in other people-community organizers. What Palin says about Obama or Biden says about McCain-they're grown people in a grown-up game. I trust ALL of them can take it. But ALL should also avoid involving outside people. I thought involving Palin's family was ridiculous by some of the press. But for her-criticism is fair game. Cheers!

I think that has more to do with all the viral emails about him being a closet muslim (and several other ridiculous ones) than anything McCain said. I don't recall him claiming that these were the words of McCain, just that his "opponents" had said that about him, which I think is a fair characterization of whoever started those emails.

Palin condescending jeers and mocking attitude did not seek to bring out the best in us. We do not need a pit bull in lipstick as the face of the USA. We've been divided long enough. So much so, that I'm sick of it.

But the issue is whether or not she's qualified - that's the first issue. The second, then, would be where she stands on issues. When she snipes at Barack Obama and community organizers in her speeches, she merely tries to deflect from the essential questions: qualifications and positions.

She is likely a loving parent, but passing along her harmful ideology goes outside my definition of being a good mom. Though that has no place in any real debate.
I am unhappy that she isn't a more learned person. She shown no interest in foreign affairs or conservation. She may certainly be a capable administrator, but can she separate her values from the job of good governance? Her past shows that she's willing to abuse the power of office.
She scares me.

Congratulations on Your first video - You should do this more often. I find Your argument fair, explanations are elegant. As for the community organisers - I live in Poland, where they basically don't exist. Or maybe they do, but in that case they're as rare as penguins on Sahara desert. Result ? We're on our own. No community habits, no social awarenes - just common distrust and fear of everyone else.

The nomination of Sarah Palin is an insult and a slap in the face to every American citizen. She was chosen for two reasons: One, McCain wanted a media cycle after a successful Dem convention. Two, because she is a woman, and the Republicans think that women are stupid and will vote for someone based solely on whether or not a candidate shares their XX chromosone. Palin and other Republicans belittle the work of community organizers because they really don't care about the American community.

Just saying the comparison to Jesus and Martin Luther King simply because one is a community organizer IS over the top... and that I THINK Palin was simply poking fun at the comparison... As I recall.. The statement was for laughs, wasn't it? Maybe it's just because I didn't perceive it as an attack on community organizers.

I saw it as a belittling of community organization and the skills inherent in being successful as a community organizer. To say that one occupation involves responsibility where the other does not (which is what she said) is - well, it's just ridiculous. AND it has the bonus of being mean.
Was I saying that Obama is Jesus? Nope. I'm merely highlighting that community organizers are important and they do have responsibility. To indicate otherwise, which she did, is just demeaning and untrue.

She didn't call herself a community organizer; she said "being a mayor was like one, but you have responsibilities." She was mocking them, just as Giuliani had earlier in the night.
There are two reasons to use mockery in a persuasive argument: because you don't have the ability to make a more thoughtful argument, or you don't think your audience has the ability to understand a more thoughtful argument.
I'm not sure which of those things applies to Palin. Probably the latter.
