I see where Dwele got his foundation for "Down Jimmy"......A musical genius ALWAYS looks to his pioneers if they want REAL musical success!!
This is why Dwele is such a BEAST in his music. He studies and references to legends and pioneers like Stevie Wonder, and Patrice Rushen, and E, W & F......
@dynomitetucker I know it's one of my Favorite Dwele Songs...hahaha.......My top 3 has to be Vain, Down Jimmy, and Love.....the rest are amazing tho.....
"High Art" is that which stands the test of time. It's created when all elements converge to create a work that exemplifies style, craft, execution, and presentation- all at the same time.
"Innervisions" is a true work of art- and 'Too High' presents Mr. Morris at his absolute, most creative best.
So what if they don't make music like this any more.... Stevie did, and we still have it. Good enough for me.
Thanks, VT.
And thanks, Steve- for sharing it with us all in the first place.
@getguakboy Stevie was a singular phenomenon who accidentally had his most creative time in the 1970's. "They" NEVER made such music, just this very special person, using the instruments and musical style of the time to create something timeless.
Fair enough, but the 70s had many other amazing artists too. I think rock/pop music as such hit its creative peak during that time, a special bunch of musicians who for a (relatively) short period of time were given the freedom to express themselves by record labels.
@CrimsonKing589051 - Exactly, and then disco and later rap came in to kill off this type of genuine talent. The early 70's was the peak of true creativity. It was too advanced for middle American. They had to bring back the pre-school simplicity of 4 on the floor disco. The industry never recovered.
@sirnick07 - Think about the Era this was written in....the Early 70's- LSD, Luudes, Weed, Heroin, Coke....It was post-Hippie America...probably inspired by "Current Events" of the time, but I don't think he was advocating the use of Drugs....check out "Cocaine " by Clapton or Cloud 9 by the Temptations, or Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" masterpiece....it was Pre-"Crack & Meth" America..
not only did Stevie play 3 different musical instru. on this song track. This song came out the same time Marvin Gaye What Going On..... an on that track he sang Flying High.
Wow, the vinyl version of this sounds great. Even though I have many CDs, I still think nothing sounds better than new vinyl - I think it's a warmer sound. I also have this one on vinyl. This album is Stevie's best, in my opinion.
@ssur55 - I totally agree re the vinyl. I have every album I ever purchased since 1963. I still play them, though some have 'hisses and pops.'. The sound quality is amazing. Stevie's stuff is out of this world. This is my absolute favorite of his albums. Pure genius, in my opinion.
I grew up on all his classic album, and now that I'm a grwn man and musician and listening back to his early work had made me realize how so far ahead this man was at the time.
I would love to hear Stevie with this feeling of adventurous experimentation in his new music, even though he is still producing some fine music. Thanks.
Can you imagine this guy's inner thoughts? If one could choose any moment in time and hit "print screen", they could live forever in the musically fertile image! Viva la Stevie - Beautiful soul, remarkable talent from day one.
Please do not insult me, Okay? I asked you a legitimate question. I thought you were making a reference to someone else that may have stated the song "sucked". I didn't think somebody would just write that for no reason. And, before I embarrass myself even further than I already have (by responding to you in the first place),....Never-mind. Just enjoy the music, man.

i WONDER how may people actually think Stevie is advocating substance abuse on this track. anyone dare to quibble the message?

@sirnick07
No, as a matter of fact he talks of a woman dying in the last verse.
At least that is what I think.
