They did what they thought was right at the time and it ended up not being right since noone of them even hit the guy, if they were more carefull they would have killed him and not have taken as many casualties (or injured at least)

never said it would have been an easy situation to be in, but In the end better training could have stopped so many of them from getting killed. You have like 6 officers vs 1 angry fat dude who obviously put a lot into killing his wife and kid or whoever they were. I dont know if i would have done any better or any worse in a situation like that, probably worse, but then I'd have just stayed in the building and prayed that by some miracle I could shoot the guy from a window or something XD lol.
