There have been no baritones since who could handle this role and do it the justice that Tibbett does - that includes London, who recorded the aria, or Milnes, or Terfel or Morris or anyone.  This is, by today's standards, politically incorrect - but it's absolutely stunning. They don't make 'em like this any more!

This is from an opera based on O' Neill's play, The Emperor Jones, with music by Louis Gruenberg (1884-1964). It was premièred at the Metropolitan Opera on January 7, 1933, with the great Lawrence Tibett as Brutus Jones.
