  • There have been no baritones since who could handle this role and do it the justice that Tibbett does - that includes London, who recorded the aria, or Milnes, or Terfel or Morris or anyone.  This is, by today's standards, politically incorrect - but it's absolutely stunning. They don't make 'em like this any more!

  • This is from an opera based on O' Neill's play, The Emperor Jones, with music by Louis Gruenberg (1884-1964). It was premièred at the Metropolitan Opera on January 7, 1933, with the great Lawrence Tibett as Brutus Jones.
