this is an amazing song that I heard before I found her recording - when I was in an original band - and I wanted desperately to sing it. She is a great singer - and does it justice. HOWEVER - I am trying to find the charts for it and it never shows up. Does anyone know who the writers are??? PLEASE post!! Thank you.
@golfcats1 i have this on a various artists album from 1982 called"20 with a bullet".i will look up the writers for you and post tomorrow,i also have a book for British Hit Singles and the exact date of release will be on there, but im guess very late December1981/early January1982.i will post info sometime tomorrow.
Is it the word "instead" that she repeats in the prettiest high tones? I can't quite catch the word. Nevertheless it's a lovely song sung by a very pretty lady.
Sixtiesarewe - who are you? this woman has never abandoned the husband that made her as no man exists! just who are you talking about and what makes you such an expert? Sheena took on an american accent through necessity and has not forgotten her roots I can promise you that so wise up before you make such ignorant comments!
As a fellow person born at Bellshill Maternity I wish I was as talented as Ms Sheena Easton...what a wonderful voice she has. I saw her playing in Glasgow circa 1981 - fab voice. Shame fellow Glaswegians struggled with that strange accent she had - her singing was top notch IMO!
@trendygirl2001 I was in the crowd in June 1990, when Sheena appeared on stage at Glasgow Green. She had done numerous TV interviews beforehand and her fellow Scots were horrified to hear her American twang. The moment she started singing, the beer bottles started flying on stage and the booing began. Deacon Blue came on after Sheena and screamed at the crowd. 'Are you proud to be Scottish'? The crowd went mental and DB clearly had no symathy for Miss Easton.
@trendygirl2001 Even though I am not Scottish, I am proud to say Sheena Easton is my favorite vocalist of all time. She has the most beautiful voice in my opinion. I have been a fan since 1981. I cannot find another vocalist like her. I never will. I just want to thank you for appreciating Sheena's singing and voice. Actually, Sheena did not lose her accent overnight like some Scottish people think. It took me at least five years to understand Sheena because of her accent.
Wow. I love this whole album though this is my fave song on it. 'When He Shines' and 'I'm Not Worth The Hurt' are also very emotional. It's the greatest album Sheena ever put out.

Every old bitch tips 400 lbs eventually, just keep downing those gallons of Rocky Road and French Bon Bons all day on the sofa and before you know it your vagina will be a thing of the past. Hahahaha!
I just heard of Sheena today. This is not the type of music that I ever listen to, but she does have an amazing and beautiful voice! She sings with great emotion and a soft tone.
Even though I am not a Sheena fan, I really like this song. I also had it on the old "45" record. Being a guy, I didn't sing the song in the mirror; instead I was the rugged bass player in the (imaginary) background she was singing about. I have spoken.
The first time I heard this song was in 2003 on Radio Vh1 on the online radio station called "Plush." I have liked this song since! It is bittersweet but there is hope in it that things will get better. Fabulously sung by Sheena. This is not an easy song to sing.
I am not sure I understand some of these comments...yikes, but this is a sweet song that I remember...hearing after a weird breakup, retro, but still made an impact on me. Sheena is a great singer.

Dear Mikebtko, I'm sure that Christina Aguilera would do a very good job with this song. Wow! This is a great song that I remember from the early 80's. I never knew there was a video to it until now. Sheena had some SERIOUS hair in this one; still beautiful, though.
And this song goes out to Pete..... the Man I Love most in the world, He keeps breaking up with me, every time we get back together and start to get close again!
This is one of my favorite all time songs. An important song which deals with life and relationships, and the harsh reality that not all love affairs can have a happy ending. Sheena Easton's voice and the haunting music were perfect for this song!
she always reminded me of one of the ladies off the televangelist shows. but she sang with more passion than any of them! She had a string of great songs. I liked her first before Cyndi Lauper came around. I loved how they both sang so high.
Weird how she kind of just faded into obscurity-especially considering her sex symbol status. She sings this song with true bittersweet feeling....Makes it one of the best of the heart wrenching"Look what we could have had" songs.
Before Madonna, Sheena was making the blood race to the private spots! I think she went out on top, choosing to leave the games of the music biz to focus on raising a family. Class !
Sheena has one of the most powerful and distinguishable voices in the music business. She needs to put out something and give today's so-called young divas a run for their money!
I just saw her in concert about a week ago in Atlantic City and she didn't sing this song. I was very disappointed. :o( But other than this one, she did most of her other hits. She still sounded pretty good and looked great....and she's now about 48 years old. Still a hottie.
Probably her best pop ballad. Also love "For Your Eyes Only."

Q: What Key does Sheena Easton sing "You Could Have Been With Me" in???
A: She sings it in the Key of F. From what I could tell playing along with this on guitar they're just using 1-4-and-5 chords
in the Key of F. I didn't hear any others. Great Song! :)
