  • Tau ke...I remember this Whakaeke by Wake huia...Ka pai e hoa

  • this is still the bestest ever, chills still run down my body when i watch it , like it did when i was in the audience in 1998, it was a good year and they deserved to win, but did they? in the hearts of the audience, Yes they did, iwas only 16 and i saw women shaking and crying, Ka mau te wehi, and Tomeka he was a babe him and those mean Pukana eyes. Love Te Waka Huia stil, Love Haka.

  • Nothing fancy or intricate like they do nowadays in Kapa Haka. Very traditional and very beautiful to watch. Performance to keep on CD/TAPE

  • I love the performances from this era. They changed the face of Kapahaka. Awesome!

  • OMGosh... this got me all teary eyed!... being a full samoan i love to dance the traditional way... this performance is MEAN MAORI MEAN!!... alofa's to all the performer's.. back in '96 even! NIIIICCCE!!!... xo

  • 00:19 feliti mateo from parramataa eels at he bak ahahaha

  • nice stuff

  • I remember sitting in the crowd eating my hot chips and drinking a can of coke wondering what time Koro was goin to take us home. As soon as I heard the opening line of this whakaeke I was hooked! It was one of the best experiences of my life! I remember crying to Koro. He asked what the matter was, and to be honest, I couldn't reason it. Was it the voices? Was it the Lion King? Was it my upset puku? No, it was the energy, the life and realizing this is what it means to be Maori.

  • I remember those expeirances, but if we cried, it was the

back of koro's steal-cap gub boot we saw!!!! LMAO

But in saying that Te Waka Huia is the best Kapa Haka

    groups of all times!!!!!

  • i love this goup i grew up watchin them! especially this number!!

  • does anyone know how this rendition of the lion king came to be? they're not singing the maori version of the actual song, are they?

  • @ccredo No, they are just using the lion king tune.they are singing about the festival and acknowledging all the past hosts of the event.

  • awome man.. Aint seen this in ages. I rekin te matarae i orehu shuve won that year. But being there 1st year & all, i tink thats why they never did. Oh well, that dude does the mean pukana lol GO WAKA HUIA

  • yeah but first time waka huia went into the comp they won....so i dont think it was that. just that wewehi was better but meh who cares. look how great kapahaka was back then, simplicity at its finest

  • Thank you so much!! I've been trying for years to get a copy of the comps, especially the year this was performed in 1996? Loved the performances from all the kapahaka groups but I'm a Te Waka Huia fan.

  • This was the bomb live. Has anyone got their whakaeke from Ngaruawahia? that was awesome too

  • holy crap Ive been waiting forEVER for someone to put this online, AWESOME!

  • This bracket was from the Rotorua Nationals in 1996 not the 80's, Waka Huia should have won this year they were so much better then Tangiwewehi!

  • they were all pretty gud

rangiwewehi had a meaner whakaeke than waka huia.... just

  • Comment removed

  • @SandraPaki Yeah! Waka Huia got fucken robbed in this one they had the best bracket by far and rangiwewehi sucked balls. i thought Waihireres haka was pretty sick that year though.

  • e mara just because the Kapa that you wanted to win, didn't... Doesn't mean you should whakaiti another Rangiwewehi was good and deserved the win.

  • Looking at this video clip this must of been screen on TV because I was not born then so this would of been way back (styles.) in the 80,s they should make a TV documentary on all the performances going way back to todays performances

  • this wasnt in the 80s

  • fahh mean as bestest video

  • I have been looking for this vid for YEARS hoping someone would post it. Thank you!!!

  • Im from Gizzy...These people inspired us as young ones in everything good in life. This year was definately THE best year ever. Many good memories with these songs. Had Rangiwewhi with the For your love tune by Stevie Wonder and also Waihirere with the Bodyguard Whitney Houston song.

  • post them man ur be tha bomb if you do

  • shoot whanau love this!!!!

    aunty ange,u look so young

  • ithink the trentham nationals were the best ever held.

  • thank you thank you for posting this. some mongrel stole my copy years ago, boy i,ve missed it. watched it live, felt sorry for the team following them everyonr just poured out when waka huia finished. one of the the best allround performances i've seen. especially the poi as well.

  • goosebumps everytime :)

  • I love this performance I remember this performance my dad still has it on video hahaha mean!

  • all i know is te waka huia although not placing st 1st an coming 2nd what was it 6times in a row an for them to come back each and everytime with more ihe wehi an mana shows how much kapahaka ment for them! an to witness it 1st hard you no how much it means to them. i think by far the is the best whakaeke to brace the stage of te matatini wahirere are great but are lacking in something an Te Matarae have just lost a great leader moe mai ra Taini Morrison hoki atu koe ki to matua tipuna.

  • shot bro..neva forget this 1. mean as

  • Kapa Haka at its best!!!

Ki oku nei whakaaro Kapa Haka is never as good as it once was..

  • One of the best whakaeke, hard to pick wahirere 98 in wellington or rangiwewehi in Waikato in 80/90s temuera morrison performed. Traidition remains the same, but the festival is to entertain people and the maori of today have a lot of mana and ihi. To keep tradition alive you need to adapt without losing our identity. Maori boy in Scotland

  • ur da bomb for posting this bro

  • Yup this is the best whakaeke ever!, pitty dey didn't win dis year, but oh well 13 years later is okay lol.

  • Look how much ihi and Mana went into that performance.... kaore nga ihi me te mana ki nga roopu i naia nei!!!!! the roopus now are missing those look how mean they are back then iits slowly going away in my point?but waka ka pai tona roopu raua ko Waihirere and Te matarae i o rehu and il just like to say Tony Morrison kapa haka will surely miss you haere atu e whaea ki to tupuna ki runga ki to maunga haere haere haere...

  • their whole bracket from 94 is the shit, I think their best Ive seen ever.lol...
