  • how did u get quake 2 to play?

  • @mikepentop You need to download the gp2x binaries and stick them in a folder on your SD card. Those binaries are replacement executables for the PC ones. You do need to transfer the right datafiles off the cd to the right directory on your SD card. All should be explained within the zip file containing the gp2x wiz port.

    Good luck.

  • @markvergeer thank you

  • Respond to this video... So you do need the PC game to be able to play this on the Wiz.

  • If it's a pinball game you want, try Devil Crash for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive.

I play it using PicoDrive on my Caanoo. I love my Caanoo but part of me wants a Wiz also.

  • @nickbaldeagle01 Devil Crash I got that for real on my old Sega Console but thanks for the tip. Excellent game to play on the go.

The Caanoo seems very well built how are the controls on it? A lof of the same stuff comes out for the Canoo, Gp2x, Wiz and Dingoo right?

  • @markvergeer The controls are good. The little joystick takes a bit of getting used to after a d-pad but once you are used to it it plays superbly.

A lot of Wiz emulators are being ported to the Caanoo. GNGEO is excellent for the Neo Geo games. There's a Doom interpreter too.

I'm anxiously waiting for C64 emulation.

  • @nickbaldeagle01 C64 emulation is a must for any handheld device in my opinion ;)

  • i have the dingo and got fed up of not being able to instald dingic on it and went for it and got me one of wiz i was going to get the newest gp2x the cannoo but the emulators on the wizz are more muture. awesome video dude

  • @davidhass3lh0ff Hey Thanks matey! It is a shame that you sort of have to jailbreak the Dingoo to get any type of homebrew running apart from the built-in emulators. The Wiz is a good alternative and it is virtually effortless to setup. There's tons of emulators and games out for it and it even sports a touch screen. Great stuff.

So what things do you like best about it?

  • @davidhass3lh0ff i havent had mine long but i lovethe mega drive emulator it playes amazing and it great playing sonic cd on the got and lunar 1 and 2 and popfull main. the scummen emulator is amazing when u get the games working and the snes emulator is allmost perfest ALLMOST LOL and when and if they get the pcsx4all working right it will be awesome to play psx games on the go. i plan to do a video on the little gem at some point

  • @davidhass3lh0ff I 100% agree with you. Emulation for devices on the go is the perfect thing. The Wiz is an absolute awesome little device. Nothing can beat that superbright vibrant screen. The built in stylus/touch combination works really well. I was actually quite addicted to one of the build-in games - a same game with animals.

  • the thing about having every game at your fingertips is that it causes me to become scitizophrenic and i end up not beating anything but playing everything.

  • @delli2011 Too much choice can make it very difficult to pick and choose a game. I know what you mean.

  • @delli2011 haha. Yeah, I know what you mean. I have a Turbografx/PC Engine collection and I used to find it really hard to stick to a game. The novelty of having every game at your disposal does wear off, though. So don't worry, you'll be clearing games soon. :)

    My GP2X Wiz hasn't arrived yet. I can't wait. :D

  • Kickass! You've convinced me to get one. Just gotta wait a couple of weeks to see if the customs will let my other stuff through before I do it.

  • @Zambaku You can perhaps order one still from gbax or gp2x (dot) de

both are from Europe so customs won't be a problem.

There's new software that will also allow the Wiz to run the older gp2x software!

  • ohkay i go the program handbrake but i have no clue how to use it :p you guys seem pretty tech savy you should do tuts for the wiz

  • @ohhwaycacaw There's quite a few tutorials out here on Youtube. They're better than my written explanations! Go do a search.

A good suggestion about the tutorials for the Wiz. Perhaps we will. :P

  • oh im sorry i didnt mean like that, i meant i put mp4 videos into the movie folder on the sd card and they wont play on the gp2x wiz :(

  • @ohhwaycacaw The wiz can't play all resolutions. Try another one or use handbrake (available for free on many platforms) to decode the file for the wiz. There is no use sticking too high res movies on the card with that tiny screen. There is a specific optimal setting for the wiz / gp2x in handbrake. Good luck

  • im having trouble playing videos hellllllp!

  • @ohhwaycacaw YouTube does that sometimes. Select a different resolution video and it will probably play correctly. Some videos seem not compatible with mobile devices.

  • Can you install games you want?...and how do I do it?...appreciate any answer

  • @cosmicgate07 It is just a matter of copying the appropriate files to an SD card and putting that in the Wiz. There's a great side w w w . g p 2 x . d e

that has a ton of emulators etc for the Wiz. There's even software for the Wiz allowing it to run Gp2x software too!

  • Will it run Mortal kombats at full speed or playable in mame now????

  • @demonseed2 I don't know. Don't think so as it is a N64 like hardware in the arcade.

  • Sorry, but the Vice is not fullspeed. Only some games work in exactly 100% fullspeed.

  • good range covered in this video - thanks for uploading

  • As clever as these hand held emulators are, they just lack the character that retro gaming consoles have.

  • @themusicman555 Of course, I totally agree. That's why I have a spare room filled to the brink with retro consoles. Just look at my other videos and you'll see what I mean.

But this device allows me to take all those games with me on the go which is excellent. Of course it can never substitute the real thing but for convenience (on trips, being away from home) it's a very nice way to have access to your games.

  • @themusicman555 What do you mean, is there a problem that they run on 2.5 watts and can hold an entire garage full of roms on an SDCard?

  • I should really say I'm not knocking the Wiz at all. I just ordered mine today in fact - but the battery issue is the kind of thing people should be aware of before they buy. Having a replaceable battery at all is one of the features that sets the Wiz apart from handhelds like the Dingoo A320. As a side note I'm not sure I'll accept a complaint about clones from a guy who's wearing pink knee-boots!

  • @Visionism You're right about the replaceable battery that is quite important in my opinion. At least this battery is replaceable without too much fuss. Replacing the battery on a Dingoo well..... sigh.

    LOL

  • For people in the US should be pointed out that replacement batteries can indeed be ordered - from Germany! Nobody in the US stocks them as far as I'm aware - someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Some Batteries Plus stores (not all) are willing to make up a custom battery pack that will work but be aware they cost in the region of $50, although that does get you a longer lasting battery than the supplied one. It probably isn't an issue for most people but its worth taking into account.

  • @Visionism Excellent points! I think h t t p : / / w w w . g p 2 x . d e is one of the German sites that is also willing to send those batteries to the US!

  • Yay. Boulderdash. That and Monty Mole were my favourite C=64 games.

  • @Nickbaldeagle01, Boulderdash is a great game. Monty Mole was an excellent platformer. Totally agree with you on that.

  • "Attack of the clones!" Hahahah! Best video review of the GP2x Wiz EVER! Thanks for the update, nice to see the mode-z works well now.

  • @Evilpig247, I am glad you liked the review. It was worth revisiting the Wiz as a lot of the emulators have been upgraded to superior versions. :)

  • this firmware is incredible.

  • good review but the sounds was really muffled

  • Indeed - I will have to agree with you on that. The camera I used records sounds from the front and I did my live commentary from the back of the camera - there's no way for me to have a microphone attached or have a directional microphone with this cam so the sound is less than perfect.

  • Try to switch off the lights next time...you will eliminate reflections...

  • Totally switching off the lights actually produce a worse quality picture with my camera as it will loose focus and witht the reflections and other visible items the camera will keep focus resulting in a clearer focus, better capture of the screen but alas reflections.

Your tip could work if I set the focus to fixed and keep the Wiz completely still while playing. Thanks for the tip.

  • Is Quake 1 and 2 hard to play with a D-Pad?

  • @RareAspie well the controls are pretty nice. Turning (looking left and right) is done by moving left/right on the dpad. Moving forward/backward is done by moving up and down on the dpad. The action buttons are mapped, fire, change weapon. It is possible to strafe with the shoulder buttons. It is also possible to redefine your own preferences.

It's quite different from mouse and keyboard but the game is surprisingly playable this way.

  • At one point in the past I was gonna get one of these, until I saw the pandora, I really wanted something I could use to draw and make things with on the move, I just hope its as good as the Wiz. Beamrider looks an awesome little game, I love abstract style games.

  • @Atombat, I've a Pandora coming my way as soon as it is finished. I'll no doubt make a similar video on that as well. But I guess I need to be more patient still as the production has hit quite a few snags and it is NOT a commercial venture but a community based effort.

  • You're very patient in regards to the Pandora, as we've discussed. I'm not as patient as you, but I'm still waiting. If that wasn't coming, I would certainly have considered a Wiz or one of the other options since I'm not totally happy with my GP2X-F200.

  • I am - perhaps too patient - but I was a part of the community for a long long time so I know the creators and their actions a little better. :)

  • hmmm..

  • Did you made this test with the new firmware(12/1/2010) installed? They say that improves the performance and reduces the diagonal issue.

  • @Raindog Nope, I used the previous firmware. I am always very skeptical of upgrading unless I really have to. I am happy with it how it runs right now so I probably will not until many good reports and reviews have come out on the newer firmware.

Thanks for the heads up on the new firmware !

  • Wow the build quality is bloody nice!!! I liked the GP32 but this looks really slick, nice screen too 5*

  • The screen is very nice. It's a bit small in my opinion, but OLED really is a lot nicer than LCD - at least for video games. I wouldn't want to have to do work on an OLED, regardless of it's size, it's too grainy.

  • The screen is very nice. It is OLED so it will probably fail more quickly than a regular LCD but the difference is vast.

On single color screens you do see a little grainy-ness (?? non native speaker here) but that comes with the territory.

  • It doesn't have to be a single color for you to see "grainy-ness" but it's not that big of a deal - it's not distracting, but I imagine it would be if it were text.

  • I had a gp2x and i didnt like it,my main problem was that i didnt know how to get the emuators working and i couldn't get help from anybody so i just gave up and sold it.That and the build quality was crap as well as a million other problems.

This looks considerably better, your tempting me to buy one! i might just bookmark the site for later viewing :)

  • You could not get help on GP2X forums? I am surprised!

  • I tried but no,i prefer having a system and slapping a game in not messing around with roms,i can work emulators but on the gp2x i just couldn't work it out.

  • Ah got you well then better stick with commercial handhelds like NintendoDS and Sony PSP. I have those too but enjoy open handhelds like GP2X and Dingoo, sure they are not just plug n play they do take research and figuring out but I like the challenge and the end result..........

  • @Rob, I am very curious after the experiences with the Dingoo. Was it easy to set up? The quality of the emulators should be comparable to those on the Wiz as most of them are actually cross ported between the Wiz, gp2x original and the Dingoo.

    w w w . g p 2 x . d e is a good place to start - it's in German but it gives you access to a great file-section to both the gp32, gp2x, wiz and Dingoo as well as the upcoming Pandora! :)

  • @markvergeer I updated to a newer version of the firmware, it has been altered somewhat but nothing drastic. To be honest, I have read the steps/procedures to install Dingux (Linux for the Dingoo) setting up a dual boot etc but it did seem somewhat complex to me, I am sure you would fare better. However, I am finding enough emulators that run on the native firmware just fine, sure Dingux would give me more options but I am happy with the native emulators so far including Atari lynx / Atari 7800.

  • @MaximumRD Colecovision and more, I don't think I feel the need to tinker with it beyond that as I am very happy with what is already available for it.

  • Great job on filming this mark i've never seen a hand held filmed with such clarity. looks like you have everything in the palm of your hand! Animatch looks a lot like Zookeeper for the DS.

  • @The8BitChampion, thanks - it really worked out well. The bright screen of the Wiz helped a lot though. This device literally brings you everything in the palm of your hand.

Animatch I believe was kind of inspired by Zookeeper and the programmer - Ruckage - actually produced a whole line of excellent games of the same quality. Graphics and music-wise.

  • That's one snazzy little gadget. Good variety of games you got on it too.

  • It's snazzy all right. Damn nice pice of kit!

  • its like ds to ds lite really i think its the same hardware as the old version

its a great little device it can run duke nukem 3d, quake, doom ect and lots of emulators

its a bit pricey but nice piece of hardware

the camera didnt slow or make the picture distort it was perfect Mark

the NES emulator suffers from some screen tear which is sad because it runs fast

  • @kieranD212 the Wiz is not compatible with the Gp2x original - as it has different hardware including true hardware 3D acceleration which the original gp2x is not capable of.

Binaries are not compatible but a lot of software has been ported over to work on the Gp2x Wiz as well.

    A different beast.

The screen tear is easily rectified - it does actually offer a mode that doesn't have it but it stretches the screen to occupy the full screen which I don't like that much as it is more fuzzy.

  • that looks cool man! my friend had a ds cart that turned it into something like this

  • I have those carts as well and I may actually revisit the DS with the new cam as well and show off the emulation / homebrew capabilities which are amazing - imaging FULL SPEED emulation of various classic consoles on the DS!

  • very nice, gonna get one, been thinking about it for a while, you have made up my mind.cheers.

  • I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I am. The build-quality is damn good.

  • Very nicely done.

I know how hard it is to make decent recordings of handhelds, and you did an excellent job.

I often ponder on whether I want a Wiz, as I already have a hacked PSP which does very good emulation.

I still can't decide, but very much enjoyed watching this.

  • The key is not to make the surroundings too dark so that the camera can actually use the autofocus properly. If it is too dark the autofocus will just keep on focusing resulting in a blurry focus.

Now the Wiz has an excellent OLED screen so that helps a lot.

The PSP has an excellent hires screen perfectly suited for emulation purposes. I have never attempted to hack my 1st generation PSP. I do have a Genesis/Megadrive collection UMD on it which is just amazing.

  • The PSP screen has a lower refresh rate with afterglow - smudges appearing with certain colors being updated. The Wiz doesn't suffer this problem - but there is an issue with a diagnoal refresh line appearing on the older apps. The latest firmware is supposed to have rectified it and a lot of the new software actually programs around that.

It's an excellent little device for on the go. Sound over the headset is great and battery life for me is between 6-10 hours - depending on activity.

  • nice device, seems to run quake at full speed

  • Actually all the stuff I showed here is now running full speed zero frameskips.

Quake 1 is hardware accelerated and runs uber-smooth. :)

  • Whoa, this is neat. I'd get it.

  • You should, there's some great deals on it. Battery life is actually quite good and it provides excellent retrogaming on the go!
