i think it is just fine too....specially on the second instance, where the tihai ends just before the where the gat is starting (9th beat)...do not think there was any issue at all.
Morons who do not understand the beauty of missing the sum on purpose (which he has done twice in this segment) should not express their brilliant opinions. Please learn to count, kthnx.
@kjaan and @jonnyfiamo...he did NOT make a mistake. Vijay Ghate ji's style is to usually finish his tehai at the begining of the composition (mukda) which doesn't nessissarly always start on the sum.....no mistake, it is intentional. Don't want to start a huge debate but just thought that it would be nice for you to know....
@kjaan you´re right. how can someone accompany a living LEGEND on tabla but not get to the Sum/Ghur?!!! Oh man, on Ustad Vilyat Khans expression you can see he`S pretty disappointed and mad at the tablaplayer..
@sitariya The concept of tihai is come back on sum which he does not. He does his chakardar tihai but does not land on the sum so he makes it up by playing additional bols to come back to sum.
@kjaan He is not played a tabla solo. It is called improvisation. Deliberately missing the sum. It adds more beauty. Listen to recordings of all maestros, you will see that specially in live concerts. That makes it more interesting. I have a concert where Vilayat playing with Samta Prasad. Vilayat deliberately skipped sum for almost 5 mins. He used to play his sum note on second beat. After few cycles, Samta prasad improvised to skip the first beat. They were enjoying it.

Both times Sanjay Ghate makes a mistake on coming back to Sum(starting point of the beat) 3:34 and at 6:02 on his tihai.
