  • It comes down to this.....JC on sax brings us closer to JC above.

  • Immense.

  • The soul of the man, absolute perfection. So long ago but not forgotten, those were the days !

    And we were there.

  • This is too beautiful...seriously this is the epitome of the expressivity in jazz, it's so beautiful it's brought tears to my eyes. A million thank yous for posting this and to the person who filmed this back that day.

  • @jazzmunky "expressivity" lol

  • @bennyboyjones oh no I wrote that?! How pretentious....but it's a real word, honestly!

  • this is just the shit...great sound quality for a live recording...fantastic

  • Coltrane was a divine gift to humanity...

  • 17 deaf

  • happy birthday John Coltrane 9/23/26

    bless you for the bliss

  • i want to talk about Coltrane

  • Priceless...

  • 17 people deserve to be burned and listen to katy perry while they die

  • @paisteguy799 I'm hoping those 17 people misclicked.

  • 17 people confirmed their lack of taste.

  • maybe some day i will be that good on the saxaphone i play it in our band at the high school maybe i will get this good XD

  • @ChaoticTurtleFish maybe its just impossible for anyone to be that good....actually...it is ..fuckface, dont even compare ur potential to this man, for he was no man, he was a spirit from another dimension that somehow found its way here to bless us with the ultimate form of jazz sax

  • now that's amazing!

  • so beautiful I just want to cry

  • For me this is where the sax had it's finest moments in the hands of this master, it seemed so effortless for John. there are others that had great careers but Clotrane to me was better than the rest. this video says it all.

  • que me daaaaaaa

  • I just read the Koran, the Bible, took a 7 minute ride in a in a SR71 and Mig 25, fought like Bruce Lee, and was haunted by the pleasurable sound of a well tuned 426 Hemi leaving a rest stop hard in Grand Island Nebraska at approximately 3:17a.m. This man is just beyond belief.

  • Wish I could have had the chance to see Coltrane live.

  • Gorgious...

  • He isn't playing, he's singing and talking.

  • Great music !!!

  • coltrane plays like no one. He Comes from another planet.

I really think he was an angel

Thanks to the guy who record this video.

  • coltrane plays like no one. He Comes from another planet.

I really think he was an angel

  • It is dreamlike to be able to see the animation of JohnColtrane now surely.

Thank you for a wonderful, valuable animation.

  • This is a Live Concert recording ... are there more tunes of it ???

  • I didn't know anything about anything in 1962. I was 12 years old and it took me years to discover this music.

  • This is my favorite contrafact of Misty that I ever enjoyed...period...

  • One word..great!

  • I wonder who the 13 deaf people were that clicked dislike!

  • @zezra38 bunch of juveniles who haven't found themselves yet. Speaking from experience, I loved all music, but Jazz until my 30's. Now I can't get enough of it! Simply brilliant!

  • lucky one,

the one that coltrane wanna talk about

  • there is nothing i enjoy more than silence and jazz .... if you have never had a piece of mind then you are sure to introduced to it if you could ever put the two together thank God I i brought up the right way.

  • Now that's a ballad!!!

  • 12 people had tears in their eyes and missed the like button

  • Thanks!

  • The 12 people who dislike this video are children or mental retards

  • @coporal4 Most likely children of mental retards...;-)

  • @coporal4 Who says children dont like this?. Mine do. Got to teach them.

  • @iwivera Your kids sure have great taste...

  • A thing of beauty.

  • 12 dislikes, who are these people?

  • @SidewalkFrequencies They're very very sad people!

  • @SidewalkFrequencies People who don't know that there is a Higher Force at work through Coltrane in this song and his life. We shall show them the light through education and meditation.

  • My moma named me Melody but I never knew the meaning of the word untill I experienced this. I must own this

  • The thing about Trane is that the sound of his group takes it collectively to a whole other level. Sonny Rollins is one of the greatest of all time, but for me, what separates Trane's impact is the melding of Trane, McCoy, Jimmy, and Elvin into one unified spiritual sound. There will never be another group like this one.

  • This is absolutely my favourite YouTube video- A complete solo from Trane during the period when he was at his absolute "zenith"! This performance like those of other great composers is timeless- It can never be "dated"-this is as everlasting as compositions by Bach, Mozart , Beethoven, etc. and add one more dimension compared to written masterpieces, it's improvised, yet it's perfectfully formed and executed! Trane was a genius- jazz is too narrow a category to put him in!

  • Sweetest, thank you for posting, more love!

  • @Obelix5150 although it should be remembered that the concert is also on CD - "Live in Stockholm 1963" and so it's possible the sound of this video is from the recording.

  • @coreymwamba The version on "Live in Stockholm 1963" is almost 10 minutes long and is a soundboard recording. It's completely different...McCoy, Jimmy, and Elvin stop playing after about 5 minutes in, and it's just Trane until the end. This video is from 1962 and is definitely an audience recording.

  • @Astrotype yes my bad - misread the year. But there's no doubting the quality of the music!

  • @coreymwamba

from minute 2:00 and a bit on, you can clearly see the notes he's playing match with sound, just perfect

  • Wow, this was an incredible experience... His lyricism, his deep & sweet soul enveloped me, and I could feel the authenticity of his passion, spirit, and love.... Whew, this is was turned me on to Jazz, to playing saxophone, being this moved, thank you for posting this...

  • thank you for sharing this beauty

  • Wow. He finishes this incredible performance by backing away and moving to the rear and he then bows humbly to the audience - no ego. John Coltrane spoke to us sincerely and directly. This music always stops me in my tracks, compels me to listen, still gives me the chills.

  • What a unique, beautiful voice Trane had...

It is also interesting to note that this film, taken almost fifty years ago sounds better than any live concert footage I have heard from today's "advanced" Iphone technology...

  • @svenghoulieil well this concert probably had less extreme frequencies and was quieter than most modern shows... although if you mean modern jazz i guess there is no excuse, just the fail of modern technology...

  • i have just fallen in love with this guy

  • calgon take me away,wow

  • pop your colla greens

  • who cares about justin beiber...THIS is real music

  • 12 people are justin bieber fans, for sure!

  • This music has healing power...just incredible...

  • i played tenor like 4 months now, but im interested playing jazz and blues, how do i start practising those?, by playing their notes? or just improving and playing what i feel and sounds good to me?.

  • @JanneFlinck1981 learn the theory of music and harmony first, than scales and the rest

  • @JanneFlinck1981

copy players you like by ear

  • @JanneFlinck1981 You can't go wrong by playing the notes of the geat players. You can play along with their solos and try to pick things up...

  • @JanneFlinck1981 gotta learn the theory first, yes, but that's just the beginning - above all study, transcript, emulate the solos of the masters (seriously, ALL the greats did exactly this) Best of luck! Don't worry too much about all the theory, although apparently complex, the theory is much less than the totality of the music, which is not exhaustively described by theory (after all, there are competing music "theories").

  • @jazzmunky learn the theory forget it all and let your artistic side of the barain do the talking for you

  • @JanneFlinck1981 *transcribe

  • mesmerizing

  • This video has 665 likes. I would like it, but I'm kinda scared the devil will take hold of me...

  • 11 negative votes!? Means eleven don't have a clue...

  • Astrotype your list is superb, thank you so much for sharing

  • If he's not reading music, his playing is improvisation produced from memory, skill and human inspiration.

  • its like singing in the bottom of the sea, but a t the same time u r flying in the stars

  • ultimate!

  • Where is the rest of the footage?

    Thanks for posting :-)

  • He played like a saint and therefore was a saint.

  • MANY of the musical geniuses didn't live that long...what a missed treasure !

  • How much of this is improvised?

  • @w0rfles1

my guess is the theme ends at 1:13

  • @w0rfles1 No easy answer. If you consider a simple interpretation of what improvising means, you could say he starts improvising when the song's structure and melody has gone full circle at 1:56. But Coltrane "embellishes" the melody from the start. Considering a more in depth interpretation of what improvisation means would require a thesis and is clearly beyond the scope of a youtube comment. ;)

  • beautiful

  • R.I.P beautiful man..

  • When I die and get buried in some hole, I wish that Coltane would be played during the "ceremony". Probably something off "A Love Supreme" but it does not really matter. Even 1 note would be enough.

  • nothing can ever be cooler

  • I Want To Talk About You

  • why, and how could there be 11 people "not liking" this??? one of the best tipe of music in the world and there are still 11 people who think the oposite...

  • @joaopcl2

    It's because their all republicans

  • there are really no words to describe Coltrane......he just resonates with your spirit and fills you with awe, joy, peace

  • oh wow, doing my favorite Ray Charles song

  • beautiful, perfect, so spiritual, pure unadalterated Coltrane. What a lovely song. It's like hearing him for the first time, again. Yeahh...... :)

  • I Applaod the cat who sneaked his cine camera into the gig and managed to get this master piece... give that guy a grammy

  • perfection as conceievd by his spirit. Something that is shared by many who also aren't musicains. It's nice to hear harmonic possibilities through any great musical artist. No wonder musical programs were taken out due to "lack of money" during that Ronald Ray-gun era and Physical education programs were taken out of schools especailly in the Inner Cities. Think about the effects. All by evil design . This level of music requires optimism despite the horrible events that continue to happen.

  • John Coltrane Is My Idol! He is the reason i play Tenor Saxophone now!

  • anglicy żal mi was !!! ludzie jesteście beznadziejni macie po12 lat i w waszych szkołach nawet jęz .polskiego się nie uczycie a my wpolce waszego do bani musimy

COLTRANE - BEST MUSICIAN EVER! <3

  • I've been listening to Coltrane since

    1967.

And, with each listen - I'm still going: "Wow!"

I know his sound - anywhere - alto or tenor. He's that unique. Once, his style is "known," he can't be confused with anyone.

  • no wonder he died so young. he put all his life in his music.

  • Some artists open doors.

John opened a door, and walked on through.

  • when i listen to john coltrane, i get two things:

    1. i feel as if he knows me.

    2. i feel as if i know myself just a little bit more.

  • great comment

  • @marche111

    i feel exatly like that!

  • @marche111 good comment, you may be right..

  • @marche111 Yes

  • @marche111 both are the same... coltranes music reflects the absolute universal energy

  • That was fantastic. As good as it gets. A true "10" in the chill category.

  • @marche111 I feel like I know him just through the notes he plays.

  • @marche111 - well said

  • i wanna have that saxophone's baby.

  • Wow, did anyone notice the improv lesson around 2;22 by him leading inside then opening the door with whole tones. By the time he gets to 4;23 he approaches with the lower register to lead us totally in a different key! By 4;50 he resolves and brings us back! What a journey!!

  • Aside from all you folks's great comments. The brilliance and pain of his wanderings, the exposure of his heart. Turning pain into beauty. The whole group is on the wavelength.

  • elvin rules...he could trick all over the place on ballads, and hammer as hard as anyone if he needed to. The Man.

  • delicious

  • saxophone...love...elegance..,,,great!

  • I want to live with you

  • absolutely beautiful playing !!

  • Wow, Stockholm ! next step was Finland/Helsinki where Coltrane changed my life, for life ! I gave up the sax and became a Photographer... Until at 60, I returned to jazz, again thanks Coltrane, If I would have remained a musican, I would be dead by now...

  • Almost too good to be true...

  • imagine, this was THE opening act of "we love you yeah, yeah, yeah...!", Hendrix and all of the 'White Rabbits'.

Utterly masterful, giving, powerful, cool and fearless sophisticated elegance and not much that followed it came even close....

  • Very good recording...and excellent playing with lots of feel...added to fav

  • Legend of sax !

  • If in fact Trane is still making such beautiful music these days, albeit in heaven, then I am not going to fret dying anymore.

  • Coltrane. I was turned on to Coltrane's music in the early 70s. He was looking for something and in between each note,he found a little more what he was looking for. Very Gentle Spiritual Giant.

  • Wow, who could possibly play any more sincerely, and communicate more directly with the listener, than Coltrane does here? Gorgeous

  • isnt this great ......his sound ....out there!

sax players come and go .........coltrane awesome

    affects the soul.....spiritual

  • wow this is so beautiful and impressive !

It seems like contrane is connected with his horn it looks like its a part of his body.

  • @chrispotterfan

Every sincere hornplayer connects, plays with the body!

  • When i think of what real Jazz music is, I think of this. Mr. Coltrane is one of the best to do it!!!

  • its not about whos the best,

its about who brings their own soul and perspective into their music. If every musician's goal was to be better than those before him, then I wouldn't want to become one.

Its about loving what you do, and sharing that feeling with other afecionados

  • Burning.

  • Does it matter who was the greatest? Just enjoy them. Trane, Rolins, Bird, Prez, Getz etc. All great. Just feel privileged that they walked this earth and and left so much to posterity.

  • @thermosoverfil well said.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. How absolutely wonderful to have captured this moment for the timeless.

Of all the wonderful Coltrane eras, this time period to me is possibly the most interesting and beautiful to listen to. He had yet to abandon playing traditional harmonies, but was really starting to stretch them. There are moments of hardcore mixed in with moments of singing lyrical beauty. It was such a wonderful balance.

  • coltrane.....awesome ..........makes you listen....

    timeless

  • wow! right when i think frankie lymon is the best musician ever, then i check this out. what beautiful music

  • Wonderful music played by the master. Beats anything today.....

  • finally a video where no one hates who it is, because how can you be angry when your hearing something so beautiful?

  • what a beautiful sound!

  • My favorite version of this song is the one on Live At Birdland.

  • i just found out that andre 3000's song my favorite things is a remake of coltranes song... never heard coltrane before, ive heard of him but never listened. i am now a fan. such amazing music.

  • You know If I told my daughters aged 18 and 20 that a lot of todays artists were, and still are inspired by the legends of the past. They would just say they did'nt believe me....but it's funny how the silence fills the room when i show them:D

  • Wow...They got good ears!

  • Coltrane is great. I adore his I have a big framed print of his Blue Train cover pic on my wall. For anyone to state, however, that he is the "BEST EVER" is to show a complete lack of understanding of art/music. Dexter Gordon, Sidney Bechet, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, etc, etc. How does one possibly state that Trane was definitively better that any of them? Even more important, why would one feel the need to? When one makes such statements one demonstrates what a fool he or she is.

  • Right on bro, couldn't have said it any better myself.

  • You cannot compare them. Its like apples and oranges. However,He was the best ever for this style of modern saxophone playing a style which he singlehandedly created.Without him there would be no Brecker,Bergonzi,Grossman Henderson etc. or at least they would play very differently...

  • I appreciate your perspective, but there is nothing foolish in referring to John Coltrane as the best ever. You are entitled to your belief that such an appellation is specious by its nature, but to call others foolish for believing the contrary is not terribly smart.

  • They are all just playin their own progressoins. Parker was definitely the greatest becauese he could connect the changes so naturally and melodically. If u listen closely, Coltrane is just playing his own progressions, trying to connect and make sense of them with whatever he hears, which is hard. People get bored and innovate. Giant steps was a breakthrough because of this, but parker just made everything a song, even with all kinds of substitutions.

  • mrhitmanisback

Coltrane had his own tone and above all a certain feeling(SOUL!?), Webster was another cat altogether, from the old school never really got around playing "modern jazz". Getz, well about that guy's tone is so much said that it's become slightly tiresome. Prez was great, just great and as you point out ALL BLUES. Dex, well he had a bit of all the afore mentioned! BUT Sonny Rollins is still out there and doing great stuff!

  • Wow that's pretty harsh, Trane had some incredible ideas that nobody had ever thought of before. I mean the oblique chromatic vocabulary at 2:20 - 3:00 could Getz have produced that? The amazing alternate fingerings on Wise One I find almost impossible to replicate. Trane influenced Wayne Shorter (the least repeater pencil of all) and Michael Brecker (structurally lick-based vocabulary a la Bird) plus many others. He was a great practicer and innovator.

  • @adeduction shut up =) and listen, you have one mouth and two ears...why?? ;)

  • Comment removed

  • you are a person without sense for art...very poor...

  • Comment removed

  • if you had read my post, you would have read that I wrote etc, etc, so I'm fine if you substitute Hawkins, Getz,et al for my examples. Art, at this level, is purely a matter of preference. "This one is better than that one, etc." I believe that Coltrane, himself would think that it is absurd to speak in these terms. The point is to enjoy all the great ones and appreciate their similarities and differences. ART IS NOT MEANT TO BE QUANTIFIED. IT IS YOU THAT DOES NOT GET IT.

  • Or, these people just mean that they enjoy Coltrane's music more than any other artist's.

  • that may be what they mean, but it's not what they say. They use terms like "best ever". As I wrote, I adore Trane, and happen to like his music far more than Lester Young's, for example. That doesn't make him better than Young was.

  • What a piece of history!

  • To know that this moment of pure beauty almost slipped into eternity if it was'nt for this audience member is deeply moving

  • filmed by an audience member ? i don't think so : a hand-held camera, or on the shoulder, is very difficult to keep stable, if you're not trained a bit, and the sound, especially the double-bass, seems too clean to be the result of a single mike on the camera !

In the same time, it's strange to film a show with a single camera, from the side of the stage...

    Now, I'm lost :-)

Anyway, thanks John fot all the beauties you gave us...
