For me this is where the sax had it's finest moments in the hands of this master, it seemed so effortless for John. there are others that had great careers but Clotrane to me was better than the rest. this video says it all.
I just read the Koran, the Bible, took a 7 minute ride in a in a SR71 and Mig 25, fought like Bruce Lee, and was haunted by the pleasurable sound of a well tuned 426 Hemi leaving a rest stop hard in Grand Island Nebraska at approximately 3:17a.m. This man is just beyond belief.

This is absolutely my favourite YouTube video- A complete solo from Trane during the period when he was at his absolute "zenith"! This performance like those of other great composers is timeless- It can never be "dated"-this is as everlasting as compositions by Bach, Mozart , Beethoven, etc. and add one more dimension compared to written masterpieces, it's improvised, yet it's perfectfully formed and executed! Trane was a genius- jazz is too narrow a category to put him in!
@Obelix5150 although it should be remembered that the concert is also on CD - "Live in Stockholm 1963" and so it's possible the sound of this video is from the recording.

Wow. He finishes this incredible performance by backing away and moving to the rear and he then bows humbly to the audience - no ego. John Coltrane spoke to us sincerely and directly. This music always stops me in my tracks, compels me to listen, still gives me the chills.
It is also interesting to note that this film, taken almost fifty years ago sounds better than any live concert footage I have heard from today's "advanced" Iphone technology...
@svenghoulieil well this concert probably had less extreme frequencies and was quieter than most modern shows... although if you mean modern jazz i guess there is no excuse, just the fail of modern technology...
i played tenor like 4 months now, but im interested playing jazz and blues, how do i start practising those?, by playing their notes? or just improving and playing what i feel and sounds good to me?.
@JanneFlinck1981 gotta learn the theory first, yes, but that's just the beginning - above all study, transcript, emulate the solos of the masters (seriously, ALL the greats did exactly this) Best of luck! Don't worry too much about all the theory, although apparently complex, the theory is much less than the totality of the music, which is not exhaustively described by theory (after all, there are competing music "theories").
@w0rfles1 No easy answer. If you consider a simple interpretation of what improvising means, you could say he starts improvising when the song's structure and melody has gone full circle at 1:56. But Coltrane "embellishes" the melody from the start. Considering a more in depth interpretation of what improvisation means would require a thesis and is clearly beyond the scope of a youtube comment. ;)
When I die and get buried in some hole, I wish that Coltane would be played during the "ceremony". Probably something off "A Love Supreme" but it does not really matter. Even 1 note would be enough.
why, and how could there be 11 people "not liking" this??? one of the best tipe of music in the world and there are still 11 people who think the oposite...
perfection as conceievd by his spirit. Something that is shared by many who also aren't musicains. It's nice to hear harmonic possibilities through any great musical artist. No wonder musical programs were taken out due to "lack of money" during that Ronald Ray-gun era and Physical education programs were taken out of schools especailly in the Inner Cities. Think about the effects. All by evil design . This level of music requires optimism despite the horrible events that continue to happen.

Aside from all you folks's great comments. The brilliance and pain of his wanderings, the exposure of his heart. Turning pain into beauty. The whole group is on the wavelength.
Wow, Stockholm ! next step was Finland/Helsinki where Coltrane changed my life, for life ! I gave up the sax and became a Photographer... Until at 60, I returned to jazz, again thanks Coltrane, If I would have remained a musican, I would be dead by now...
Coltrane. I was turned on to Coltrane's music in the early 70s. He was looking for something and in between each note,he found a little more what he was looking for. Very Gentle Spiritual Giant.
its about who brings their own soul and perspective into their music. If every musician's goal was to be better than those before him, then I wouldn't want to become one.
Its about loving what you do, and sharing that feeling with other afecionados
Does it matter who was the greatest? Just enjoy them. Trane, Rolins, Bird, Prez, Getz etc. All great. Just feel privileged that they walked this earth and and left so much to posterity.
Thank you so much for posting this. How absolutely wonderful to have captured this moment for the timeless.
Of all the wonderful Coltrane eras, this time period to me is possibly the most interesting and beautiful to listen to. He had yet to abandon playing traditional harmonies, but was really starting to stretch them. There are moments of hardcore mixed in with moments of singing lyrical beauty. It was such a wonderful balance.
i just found out that andre 3000's song my favorite things is a remake of coltranes song... never heard coltrane before, ive heard of him but never listened. i am now a fan. such amazing music.
You know If I told my daughters aged 18 and 20 that a lot of todays artists were, and still are inspired by the legends of the past. They would just say they did'nt believe me....but it's funny how the silence fills the room when i show them:D
Coltrane is great. I adore his I have a big framed print of his Blue Train cover pic on my wall. For anyone to state, however, that he is the "BEST EVER" is to show a complete lack of understanding of art/music. Dexter Gordon, Sidney Bechet, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, etc, etc. How does one possibly state that Trane was definitively better that any of them? Even more important, why would one feel the need to? When one makes such statements one demonstrates what a fool he or she is.
You cannot compare them. Its like apples and oranges. However,He was the best ever for this style of modern saxophone playing a style which he singlehandedly created.Without him there would be no Brecker,Bergonzi,Grossman Henderson etc. or at least they would play very differently...
I appreciate your perspective, but there is nothing foolish in referring to John Coltrane as the best ever. You are entitled to your belief that such an appellation is specious by its nature, but to call others foolish for believing the contrary is not terribly smart.
They are all just playin their own progressoins. Parker was definitely the greatest becauese he could connect the changes so naturally and melodically. If u listen closely, Coltrane is just playing his own progressions, trying to connect and make sense of them with whatever he hears, which is hard. People get bored and innovate. Giant steps was a breakthrough because of this, but parker just made everything a song, even with all kinds of substitutions.
Coltrane had his own tone and above all a certain feeling(SOUL!?), Webster was another cat altogether, from the old school never really got around playing "modern jazz". Getz, well about that guy's tone is so much said that it's become slightly tiresome. Prez was great, just great and as you point out ALL BLUES. Dex, well he had a bit of all the afore mentioned! BUT Sonny Rollins is still out there and doing great stuff!
Wow that's pretty harsh, Trane had some incredible ideas that nobody had ever thought of before. I mean the oblique chromatic vocabulary at 2:20 - 3:00 could Getz have produced that? The amazing alternate fingerings on Wise One I find almost impossible to replicate. Trane influenced Wayne Shorter (the least repeater pencil of all) and Michael Brecker (structurally lick-based vocabulary a la Bird) plus many others. He was a great practicer and innovator.
if you had read my post, you would have read that I wrote etc, etc, so I'm fine if you substitute Hawkins, Getz,et al for my examples. Art, at this level, is purely a matter of preference. "This one is better than that one, etc." I believe that Coltrane, himself would think that it is absurd to speak in these terms. The point is to enjoy all the great ones and appreciate their similarities and differences. ART IS NOT MEANT TO BE QUANTIFIED. IT IS YOU THAT DOES NOT GET IT.
that may be what they mean, but it's not what they say. They use terms like "best ever". As I wrote, I adore Trane, and happen to like his music far more than Lester Young's, for example. That doesn't make him better than Young was.
filmed by an audience member ? i don't think so : a hand-held camera, or on the shoulder, is very difficult to keep stable, if you're not trained a bit, and the sound, especially the double-bass, seems too clean to be the result of a single mike on the camera !
In the same time, it's strange to film a show with a single camera, from the side of the stage...
Now, I'm lost :-)
Anyway, thanks John fot all the beauties you gave us...
It comes down to this.....JC on sax brings us closer to JC above.

The thing about Trane is that the sound of his group takes it collectively to a whole other level. Sonny Rollins is one of the greatest of all time, but for me, what separates Trane's impact is the melding of Trane, McCoy, Jimmy, and Elvin into one unified transcendent sound. There will never be another group like this one.

Coltrane. I was turned on to Coltrane's music in the early 70s. He was looking for something and in between each note,he found a little more what he was looking for. Very Gentle Spiritual Giant.

Wow, who could possibly play any more sincerely, and communicate more directly with the listener, than Coltrane does here? Gorgeous

When i think of what real Jazz music is, I think of this. Mr. Coltrane is one of the best to do it!!!
thecollegeboy121 2 years ago
its not about whos the best,
its about who brings their own soul and perspective into their music.

@thermosoverfil well said.

Right on bro, couldn't have said it any better myself.
MrDafonzinator007 2 years ago
You cannot compare them. Its like apples and oranges. However,He was the best ever for this style of modern saxophone playing a style which he singlehandedly created.Without him there would be no Brecker,Bergonzi,Grossman Henderson etc. or at least they would play very differently...
boxing1000 2 years ago

BUT Sonny Rollins is still out there and doing great stuff!
helluvagun 2 years ago

IT IS YOU THAT DOES NOT GET IT.
kingjjv 2 years ago 4
Or, these people just mean that they enjoy Coltrane's music more than any other artist's.
RIPhillel 2 years ago
that may be what they mean, but it's not what they say. They use terms like "best ever". As I wrote, I adore Trane, and happen to like his music far more than Lester Young's, for example. That doesn't make him better than Young was.

To know that this moment of pure beauty almost slipped into eternity if it was'nt for this audience member is deeply moving
henkjanklaas 2 years ago 2
filmed by an audience member ? i don't think so : a hand-held camera, or on the shoulder, is very difficult to keep stable, if you're not trained a bit, and the sound, especially the double-bass, seems too clean to be the result of a single mike on the camera !
In the same time, it's strange to film a show with a single camera, from the side of the stage...
Now, I'm lost :-)
Anyway, thanks John fot all the beauties you gave us...
