It's just when you think you've heard everything good you can find in a music movement that arrives that band for which you realise you are doing something that doesn't have nothing to compare with music itself: Talk Talk. And you listen to it, amazed.
It's just when you think you've heard everything good you can found in a music movement that arrives that band for which you realise you are doing something that doesn't have nothing to compare with music itself: Talk Talk. And you listen to it, amazed.
There's a quote I remember from an anime where a character says, "If you can't enjoy saki, there's something wrong with you." It's similar for me with this. If I can't enjoy Talk Talk, I know that there's something wrong with me. :)
seems they went from a perfect 80s synth-pop band through cerebral electro shoe-gazing of the very best kind, and eventually left off a beautiful siren-song of a final note that was cast upon the sea, only for Sigur Ros to pick it up and apply their Icelandic fairy-dust to it and deliver a Nordic version of what Talk Talk might have been if they had still been with us. Talk Talk - very important to me and my musical journey. Humbling at times.
TT, my all time favorite!! En met het verstrijken van de jaren... wordt het gemis aan nieuw werk van TT alleen maar groter....
i saw talk talk at the milton keynes bowl in 82, supporting genesis, they got absolutely hammered by the crowd. what have genesis done since 82, abacab, illegal alien, we can't dance, basically a load of crap, and what have talk talk done, sorry but i can't think of any crap songs..................still thinking........many thanks for posting this timeless classic.
I have listened to many bands and artists from tom waits, leo sayer, led zepplin, metallica, andrea bocelli, u2, kenny rogers, pink floyd, bob dylan, james taylor, talkin heads, radiohead, kate bush i could go on and on all night............WHY HAVE I NEVER HEARD THIS BAND in my 34 years on this great planet....i think i've just found 1 of the very very few 80's bands that i actually like(due to 90%of them being strung out on synthesizers).
I searched for this particular song for many, many years. It is part of a very important period in my past along with many other Talk Talk songs. So glad to have finally find it.
This band was unique. In my humble opinion, they are right beside Pink Floyd and the likes.
i always knew I loved this band but for some reason i really, profoundly accepted them as one of my all time favs next to 'The Smiths' when i listened to Spirit of Eden while driving through Joshua Tree
music is still trying to catch up to the brillance that is talk talk. I'm so thankfull that was born in 1970 so that when they came around i was ready. they are still and always will be my favorite band of all time. thank you talk talk for being the soundtrack of my life.
I had the Talk Talk album - loved it, craved it, lent it to someone. Never got it back. I didn't realize the depth of my bereavement at it's loss until listening again. I'm going to freakin' buy them all AGAIN!!
this band sounded nothing like anything else around in the '80s and fascinated me then ... still there's nothing to quite compare. the only songs i can think of where the silence is as important as the sounds ... wierd and majestic stuff.
@javierdamien No, he's retired. I know, I know. He's recently worked on projects with people, so maybe eventually someone will talk him into doing an album. Its funny, the recent stuff he's done is just musical accompaniment... rather than sing. I want to hear his voice again.
It's Sunday evening and the weekend is almost over. Tomorrow at 6am I'll be standing on a cold, dark and fucking miserable station platform with a load of other sad bastards, and d'ya know, listening to this now, I don't give a shit!
@slaphaddalztick i feel like that now and its saturday nite :( 2 days out of 7 is too little time for humans to have to do the things that makes life worth living!
@slaphaddalztick you are most welcome, i actually worked as assistant enginner with the guy (Phil Brown) who recorded this album. I didn't work on Spirit Of Eden itself but another project/different band. He said everything on Eden was distance miked - 12 feet away for drums/amps, 6 feet for acoustic stuff
Your comment just made my day. Here, here! When the musics this good it transports a person straight into another dimension, one where every care dissolves into meaningless thought.
I have every TT album and after 20+ years of listening they're still as fresh as day one!!! Music that stands the test of time!
@slaphaddalztick Great visual. My heart bursts and sends out warm muffins and coffees to all of you...and then later, when you need it the most, a gentle touch, a warm hug, a knowing smile - one that propels us both away to a place where Mother Nature rules and all is well. There is no more powerful tool than the imagination. A single soul, thousands of miles away, nameless and faceless, is reaching out to make a golden arc of unconditional love, from needing and wanting to give and to receive.
@slaphaddalztick As an artist and child trapped in an adult's body, imagination is a huge part of my world!! I will also be writing a couple of books as soon as everything is "set"! Now tell me about you??
This is almost ritual music...Hollis was tryind to find spiritual illumination through "Spirit of Eden" (and "Laughing Stock" is really amazing, too). It's evident on the lyrics...think he borrowed the idea from Popol Vuh and, of course, John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme"...
Many , many Thanks to Colour of Spring for keeping this timeless music alive for all of us to listen and think about how amazing this music is. I am over 50 and I started listening to Talk Talk when I first heard "It's your LIfe and have been listening ever since
I signed on because of this memory...My sister's name is Eden, her boyfriend gave her this LP because he named his band Taste of Eden....we loved this music then,
A wholly unique and uncategorizable sound informed by elements of jazz, classical, and ambient music; their masterful final recordings, while neglected commercially, possess a timelessness rare among music of any genre, and in retrospect they seem the clear starting point for the post-rock movement of the 1990s.
Man, this song could kill a man if that person was depressed. But if you are happy, yur the whealtiest man alive. This song can amplify emotions so much. Beautifull
I lived through this era and more as a result of ignorance I was listening to other things - having listened to these guys for just one evening (already having heard the obvious hits some times over previously) I just wish I had listened sooner than now - I am now catching up and boy they are pure class!!!!!!!
Talk Talk, at this stage in their career, created a quality of music that is seldom heard today. in one song, they could convey more emotion and thought than most artists do in entire albums. truly extraordinary
haha holdin d wife after love makin, that is seriously hilarious .i agree best comment ever, haha,i usualy somke a splif and fall asleep.love his honesty.
Critics often view Spirit of Eden as a departure from Talk Talk's previous albums. Compared to their 1986 hit The Colour of Spring, it was commercially unsuccessful. Many critics, however, praise the album and consider it influential to the post-rock movement of the 1990s.
Spirit of Eden has not dated; it's remarkable how contemporary it sounds, anticipating post-rock, The Verve and Radiohead. It's the sound of an artist being given the keys to the kingdom and returning with art
Yeah and the reason why the songs of Spirit of Eden remind me of some pictures is because the cover of this album is similar to them. Plus these are so good songs.
Listening to this album always reminds me of some pictures that we had on the walls or somewhere in my home of my childhood... Not that anyone's interested of that thing, but I like these songs very much :P
if you like this, talk talk produced another similar album after this entitled "laughing stock". After that mark hollis went solo, releasing a self entitled album in 1997.
(yeah, so the latest album is called "mark hollis" by "mark hollis")
My daughter asked me last week which Talk Talk track I wanted played at my funeral. Not which song I wanted played, just which particular Talk Talk track.
As I posted on the Spirit video Genius the greatest album ever recorded.
I heard that most of the tracks were recorded live in a church and then embelished slightly in post production. A landmark record that in time will be played in schools and used as an example of how mankind can achieve greatness, without selling out or following trends
This is where it all started. every post rock or modern art rock band from Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor to Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky owe thier lives to this band. One of the most influential albums ever made.
Love this album. I usally listen to it in the bath. It's quite old now ('80s) but you wouldn't think so by listening to it. Love the harmonica and the drums on this album.
I don't think that I have ever listened to a more melankolic record than TT's Spirit Of Eden. I had just finished High School and started in the army when the LP was released in the autumn of 1988. It was a good record to listen to when you felt sorry for yourself :-) Today it's just one of the best records in my collection.
I used to jokingly refer to this album as 'music to slit your wrists to' (I never did). But when I was down I would often put this album on.
Its as though you were in the company of an empathic friend who new what you were going through. Maybe thats what all melancholic music does and why people play it, though this work is in a league of its own.
Colour of Spring is such a masterpiece - then you listen to this song and it sounds so far removed, so worlds apart from that album it could be another band! Yet it's the same band, just 2 years later. Extraordinary.
Put Colour of Spring & Spirit of Eden side by side... 2 of the most inconceivably evocative albums in history. These 2 alone demonstrate the incomparable brilliance of this band. And when you factor in the rest of their work...
It saddens me that most people have no clue who Talk Talk is. But it makes me so happy to know that just about everyone I've ever met that HAS heard them, completely worships them.
I was on holiday in London when I first read your post 2 weeks ago, and it put the biggest smile on my face. Absolutely agreed. I have yet to meet one intelligent person who has listened to them, and who does not completely worship them.
lol fuck the beatles

They shook off their early Japan/Duran name tags and surpassed both of them with the passing of each album.
And in doing so lay the ground for experimental type music for bands like radiohead and the like.

if you like this, talk talk produced another similar album after this entitled "laughing stock". After that mark hollis went solo, releasing a self entitled album in 1997.
(yeah, so the latest album is called "mark hollis" by "mark hollis")

This is the best song on SOE. Massive massive catharsis.
I always thought of this album as sort of a cross between "The Joshua Tree" and ambience.

My daughter asked me last week which Talk Talk track I wanted played at my funeral. Not which song I wanted played, just which particular Talk Talk track.
Best band ever

1:40 to 1:50 and again further in the song. damn it, one of the most fuckin' amazing 10 seconds of music I've ever heard..

Damn right. Sounds like the Velvet Underground's song Heroin, when it gets really cranked up...so to speak :)

Beautiful song, but to me I love it just at 1:50 when it goes quiet and downtempo away from the guitar crescendo - fantastic !!

I don't worship them. But this whole album is other worldly.

I don't think that I have ever listened to a more melankolic record than TT's Spirit Of Eden. I had just finished High School and started in the army when the LP was released in the autumn of 1988. It was a good record to listen to when you felt sorry for yourself :-) Today it's just one of the best records in my collection.

I'm glad I'm not the only one.
I used to jokingly refer to this album as 'music to slit your wrists to' (I never did). But when I was down I would often put this album on.
Its as though you were in the company of an empathic friend who new what you were going through. Maybe thats what all melancholic music does and why people play it, though this work is in a league of its own.

Thank you for your nice words. And for showing me how melancholic is spelled :-)

Truly extraordinary . . . A wonderful track. By an equally wonderful band!

music to cry to. *tear*

Without peer, they're just... without peer.

Amen.
