I wish the Navy would keep a few F-14's just for airshow demo's. It's always nice to see them fly. Would be much better then seeing them tied down in a desert somewhere.
I remember reading a reader's digest article written by the pilot who flew the last F 14 in service. He had to sit and run the engines until they ran dry and he said you could hear them fighting to keep running even when there was no fuel left. When they finally slowed and stopped he said it sounded like someone dieing. Rock On!
One bad aircraft. I agree with everyone's statement. The US Military had one of the finest jets ever to have flown the sky's. I just don't understand why the US Navy would retire the best and settle for the F18 Hornet?.Can someone tell me why???.
@combine2 The F-35 is not slated to actually replace the F-14. It would have been in active service already, if it was. That role now belongs to the Hornet, even though, performance wise, they're very different.
@1987hawkeye thats not the jets fault for 1 its who built it and all jets planes cars helicopters motorcycles tricylcles bicycles bombs lol ect ect have fails if the f14 was a big problem it wouldnt of had such a long and fucking respectable service like i said im sry about your uncle its fucked up but shit happens if you want to talk about airforce lemons talk about the harrier jet
@JinKazama92 US Navy F-14's shot down 5 enemy aircraft over its entire service period. You are telling me that 5 is a lot of kills? The Iranian F-14's shot down a lot of enemy aircraft, but the US Navy F-14's killed 5.
thats because the US navy was never engaged in any major conflict during the F14's service. Im not just talkin about air to air combat. Im talkin bout both ground and air. The Iranians were always in conflict with their neighboring countries that time and their enemies were obviously outmatched with some tech that the US sold to Iran.
Dont sell the F-15 short. Even though its not a Navy aircraft, it has been the most dominant fighter the US has put in the sky since the P-51 Mustang and the F6F Hellcat. The F-15 is a whole other animal in itself.
They had this particular F-14 on display at the Airpower Museum at Republic Airfield(got pics of it there) but it was later moved to the Northrop/Grumman plant on Long Island N.Y.
they did not want any of these to go to boneyards and parts going into possesion of private brokers that could of sold these to others and then possibly these parts being smuggled out and ending up in Iran who i am sure would of being ready to pay good dollar for F14 parts to keep their fleet up and where there are buyers willing to pay top dollar then a supply chain more than likely will form

President Bush made the worst Mistake ever don't ever go to a one plane navy ever the f/a-18 hornet is a flawed plane big time. the f-14 is still the king of jet fighters of the navy and there is a top secret escort squadron of f-14 still active fly with both vc-25's.
@F6fhellcatace If the F/a-18 was a flawed airplane, then it wouldn't have flown over 5,000 missions and still serve in the navy after more than 30 years. Plus, there wouldnt be Super Hornet either if it was such a flawed plane. Learn your aviation.
@CRsBeem The F-18 definetly has its limitations. So what, every other plane does. No plane is invincible, even the F-22 has its limitations. Even though I prefer the F-18, I still think the Tomcat is cool
they didn't make more F14 because no matter how great the plane was it was still old and the it cost more to replace it's part.s. The same thing will happen soon to the F15 and F16 since the air force is planing on replacing the F15 with the F22 Raptor. But still the F14 Tomcat has it's place on history and was feared by all enemy who saw it.. F14 OWNS!!!!!!
I find the f-14 is better than the f-18 because it is faster has a stronger structure so what if the f-18 has higher handling at least with the f-14 you get a reliable and beautiful plane
@supasonicman wtf ur one misinformed idiot tomcats would 2d2 to you who would proberbly won't know what that is is an airial dogfight exersice 2 tomcats vs 2 f16.s and the tomcats would take them out normally with sidewinders or guns meaning they would actully fight up close meaning the tomcats was able not to out fly the falcon but to stay behind his ass contantly shows you how powerfull they are with there two gef110 or there old pratt and whitney s
@KEEPitGREEN4201 Oh yes, the sky whale that is the F-14 would *out maneuver* the nimble ballerina of the F-16. That'll happen.
By the way, its "2v2" not "2d2" and who on earth would spend so much money on developing the f-15, f-16, f-18, f-22 and f-35 if the f-14 was the best all along? Why not just make more f-14s?
@supasonicman Your comment has proved wrong, F-14's beat A-4's and F-5's which are just as nimble as F-16's. In fact, the Navy lightened their F-16's and designated it F-16N in the late 1970's. Numerous wins against F-16N's, F-15's, A-4's, F-5's, etc have been recorded. F-14's lost as well, not every student pilot will win. Remember that they are flying against Top Gun instructors, the best in the world. You really make it sound like the F-14 couldn't handle itself...well it damn well did!
Oh and i don't understand why the hell didn't they keep like 10 of them and have them for special airshows. NAS Oceana has now 25% lower visit on airshows than before tomcat was retired
Is it me or did this pilot really drop this F-14 hard on the landing??? Kinda harsh for a "final landing" I imagined something a little more graceful considering it was a full stretch of runway :)
@Jameson4Life i agree maybe because there used to hard carrier landings wich are tough on the jet that shows how strong the landing gears are on the tomcat
Here are the facts: The people in the Navy were concerned over the reliability of the AIM-54s due to them being so old. The F-14 was too expensive to maintain. It's lifecycle costs were enormous. The entire purpose of the F-14 was fleet defence against soviet fighters and bombers. The cold war ended and the threat was considered non existant.
Grumman offered to update the F-14 into a Super Tomcat... they infact offered at least 3 different updates to it. They were all too expensive.
The F/A-18 is cheaper and does the job of both the F-14 AND the A-6 and does them well.
You self proclaimed experts need to do some reading before you come here and spout nonesense out of your rear ends. Get your facts from somewhere other than AceCombat on the PS3.
@mrsiCkstar Now in terms of combat, how does the Super Hornet fair compaired to the Tomcat. I flew both, but I'm curious to know you're opinion and what backs it up.
@furiouswings if you really did fly both then I'm sure you know better than me. My point is not that the superbug could beat the F-14 in BVR or WVR. My point is simply that with the end of the cold war the F-14 became unnesessary and it was expensive and old. So why would they keep it if they have a cheaper alternative that is truly multirole as well? I think the days of fighters being designed for a single mission are gone. The F-22 will probably be the last.
@mrsiCkstar It's simply cheaper and more efficient to have a carrier full of 18's doing all the types of missions, instead of F-14s for fleet defence, F/A-18s for strike, A-6s for refueling and electrnic warfare etc.
The F-14 is one of my absolute favorites, I was sad to see it go, but I understand the reasons why it had to be done and they make sense to me. Some people still consider the P-51 to be the best ever fighter. They can't fly forever you know. Things change and war has changed.
@mrsiCkstar Also, how many fighters have been shot down in recent wars? You can probably count them with two hands or less. A/A capability isn't the only thing that matters. More and more a fighters primary role is strike missions. The Super Hornet beats the Tomcat in this area hands down. Nowadays a fighter only needs the ability to defend itself if it needs to. Big aerial engagements are a thing of the past now.
@mrsiCkstar I can agree with most of what you said. However, the F-14 is more than a match for even the Super Hornet at WVR. The Super Hornet does have a slow speed advantage, but not by much. One advantage the F-14 had over most fighters is the fact that it could gain or at least maintain speed in a high g turning fight due to its variable geometry. But I must say, your information is correct. I was just curious. Keep it up.
@mrsiCkstar ur right but im sorry i have to disagree with u on the part were u said that the hornet can do the tomcats job i dont think so. alot of countrys have the f18 even the f18e superhornet what country besides iran has f14's none
@KEEPitGREEN4201 I'm not sure I understand what you mean. What I meant was that the F/A-18E can do the fleet defence role (which was the F-14's job). It's not as perfectly suited to the job as the Tomcat was, but it can do it good enough. Yeah Iran has F-14s. But they're all old models and their AIM-54s are old as well. I wonder if much of their equipment is even usable anymore. Does anyone know when they last received spares from the States? Has to be a looooong time ago.
The only problem with the F-14 are those fanboys who have NO idea what they're ever talking about. "The AiM-54 was designed to..." Blah Blah I bet you've never even SEEN an AiM-54.
exactly lol. stupid kids think it was the best missile they had, but it was a piece of shit. It was too heavy and it only claimed 4 kills when it was in the navy LOL
too expensive to repair that is the biggest crock of shit it is not because it was too expensive to repair all the spare parts were already paid for all the personell were already trained for repairing the planes and the parts and naval personell get paid like the rest of the military on a salary they dont get overtime dont buy that our tomcats were too expensive to repair that is not the truth
@TheScrumpty The truth is that they were old. You can only squeeze so much life out of an airframe. They WERE going to keep building 'D's until 1998 but Chenney got pissed at Grumman and cancelled that . A few of them could of kept soldiering on but that becomes pointless because the service needs at least a hundred or so operational airframes for things to be efficient. Plus the 'D's age faster because their heavier. IF you have ever seen a 'D' you'll notice that its 'patched' up a lot.
yes they were old, why were they so old? the air force gets new replacement planes for its fighters as they age, why don't the navy, why was the hornet a lot newer of an airframe given the monies for a major upgrade over the older tomcat? the hornet got its first upgrade after only 7 years of service and it second and first major one after ony 10 years after that the tomcat did not get its first till 17 years and first second till 23 years????????
@TheScrumpty, Thats a loaded question, but basically the hornet had lobbyists in washington and the tomcat didn't. Also the Tomcat was already old by the time desert storm came around and thats when all these decisions were made. The AF is in worse shape than the navy. Look at whats hapening to their F-15s, their falling apart left and right. IIRC they haven't made a new F-15C since 1984. Everyone is just holding their breath for the JSF.
@TheScrumpty One of the other biggest reasons we rushed getting rid of them is that parts were STILL illegally going to Iran. There are still a lot of disloyal people high up in the government that were making a lot of extra dough on this jet, thats why all the remaining ones at amarg are toast. Its a reason of national security. I get so tired of people asking if the tomcat is coming back or why was the tomcat retired. Its lucky it lasted this long since desert storm.
yes i do understand all of this and dont have any problems with that but my problem is that iran bought the F-14A not the F-14D and there was not a single reason to stop making the F-14D or to start making the F-14 quickstrike or tomcat-21, who's parts would have been useless to iran and the navy would still have an air superiority fighter and interceptor
@TheScrumpty, I just told you the reason...Dich Chenney cancelled the order for further F-14Ds beyond 1992 because he was pissed that grumman jacked up the price to cover their asses, so he got pissed and destroyed all the tools to make them, so, unless we started from scratch, no more F-14s. BTW 90% parts commonality between F14D and 'A'. ps when have you ever seen a tomcat21 prototype! That was NEVER going to happen. (I only wish)
yes airframe wise the differences between the A and D models were 90% the same, but that is where it ends, the D models had different engines, FCC's avionics even the seats were different, i have never seen the tomcat-21 as far as i know they never made one, but i do wish they had that would have been really neat to see
@59cva I know that, I just feel as though they should've made a smoother landing considering they're on land and it's a final flight. Or maybe they did the hard landing just to show that the Cat is a navy plane!
most are broken, only few are able to fly but they dont have same avionics that USA used to use in their tomcats, anyway US destroy all f-14s so iranians wont get any usefull parts for their tomcats... what a shame :/
I read they were going to keep a few (6?) up for demos and maybe some spectator flights at air shows. Could definetly be wrong on that, but I really hope not. This is the first jet I ever remember seeing it would be sad if they were all destroyed.
USAF why do people think that because it is a fighter plane it has to be a USAF plane, the f-14 was a navy jet flown by naval pilots not air farce wanna be pilots
amarg is not an AIR FORCE facility it is attached to an AIR force base in davis monthan and yes the F-14's were there and that is where they were destroyed
@TheScrumpty The 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (309 AMARG) is a specialized facility within the Air Force Materiel Command structure
@TheScrumpty Come on, we all know your just a typical Tomcat fanboy pissed because the Hornet replaced the Super Hornet. Because seriously, what real pilot would go on YOUTUBE and all is always looking for a fight? Riddle me that.
@TheScrumpty Why are you even comparing our own country's 2 aircraft? No one should even be doing that. The answer is plain and simple. The whole reason we have the new Super Hornet is because we needed such fighters to compete with the new planes the enemy has. We needed newer planes to compete with enemy fighters such as the SU-33 and MIG-29. Are you that stupid? The Super Hornet is a worthy opponent, or I should say superior opponent for the both aircraft.
The american government has made a big mistake in de commisioning the F14s because we need the best especially at this time of the height of threats in the world
I envy the pilots/Rio's & all ground crew both on land bases & carriers who got to work up-close & personal with this beautiful baby everyday, she looked so f**king sexy!!! Live in the UK & saw 1 of these up close only once on static display at airshow around 95/96, sure it did display. My memory's fading so can't really be sure. She was a VF-74 Be-Deviler's bird off the 'Sara' in low-vis colours. Other aircraft on static but kept going back to her as didn't believe my eye's. ANYTIME BABY!!!
I have the "PRIVILEGE" of flying the F-18/E, but always wanted to take one of these babies off the deck...Oh well, have to wait for another life I guess..RIP!
AMEN brothers!!!! And with the DOD loseing the F-22 we are dead! The F-18 dosen't have what it takes! I promise that in a few years..if we keep going like this, the F-14 will see a new day! There are still a few 100!! In Iraq that have been forgoten....and I think the new Pres.....is an ok guy. But selling our DOD's to other nations is a dum as$ move!!!!!
The f18 super hornet is 10 times better than the tomcat. Yea the tomcat was the best in its day but it was designed and built in th 70's the superhornet was a 90's airplane way more capable and maintenace in exponentially less.
I have to disagree....put simply...speed...range...and payload..the F14 is way superior in every department...yes its older... but more capable..the F18 has better avionics..but thats it...
This aircraft was designed from the oputset to the best in the world and was never outclassed in it's role. The D model was an awesome strike aircraft as well and a shitload faster than the F/A-18e/f. If they had of spent some more money on them, they would have blitzed the Super hornet in every conceivable way! An incredible shame!
well since the air force did not want it when it was the YF-17 why would they want it now that it is heavier and bulkier and less maneuverable then the YF-17 was, good luck on getting people to believe that crap, but you never know our politicians could mandate it on the air force like they did on the navy
@TheScrumpty you think the navy wasn't asking for a new fighter when the only reason the F14s could beat the migs was because of our better trained pilots. With the legacy fighters now on the same playing field or even inferior to the newest SU class russian jets, we need newer better planes. We need to stay ahead and whether or not the military is asking for it, politicians must make sure we are staying one, or in the raptors case, several steps ahead of the enemy.
@SuperHornetsVFA41 The US Navy and politicians even say that there needs to be a better aircraft to replace the Super Hornet. And the Super Hornet is such a superior aircraft to the current enemy aircraft, the US Air Force is even considering to buy the Super Hornet to solve their 'fighter gap'. India and Australia as well are also thinking about buying the aircraft. Malaysia also hasn't made up their mind between the Super Hornet or the SU-30. That's how great the Super Hornet is.
@SuperHornetsVFA41 But I must admit. Range is the biggest problem with the aircraft. Although the range is inferior to the F-14, it is still a conformable fighter and one of the greatest modern fighter's of today.
@TheScrumpty Whoa, first off, no one mandated the Super Hornet to the air force. They're thinking about buying it. The Air Force WANT's the Super Hornet because they know it's better than the F-15 and F-16. I even read it on the Air Force times. And if the YF-17 and the F/A-18 the same thing, why didn't they just name it the F/A-17? No ones mandating the Super Hornet. The Navy wanted the Hornet because its got two engines, its small so more plane's can be on the deck, and it's advanced and
Wonder what that Pilot had to be thinking being the last person to ever fly a Tomcat. i would of refused to get out of the cockpit.

But still the F14 Tomcat has it's place on history and was feared by all enemy who saw it.. F14 OWNS!!!!!!

@millienniumforce WRONG the F-18 replaced the Tomcat!
wittmann 1 year ago
I find the f-14 is better than the f-18 because it is faster has a stronger structure so what if the f-18 has higher handling at least with the f-14 you get a reliable and beautiful plane
shadowhacka93 1 year ago
@shadowhacka93 There is no way an F-14 would ever beat an F-18, it couldn't even beat the F-16s.
supasonicman 1 year ago
@supasonicman wtf ur one misinformed idiot tomcats would 2d2 to you who would proberbly won't know what that is is an airial dogfight exersice 2 tomcats vs 2 f16.s and the tomcats would take them out normally with sidewinders or guns meaning they would actully fight up close meaning the tomcats was able not to out fly the falcon but to stay behind his ass contantly shows you how powerfull they are with there two gef110 or there old pratt and whitney s
KEEPitGREEN4201 1 year ago
@KEEPitGREEN4201 Oh yes, the sky whale that is the F-14 would *out maneuver* the nimble ballerina of the F-16. That'll happen.
By the way, its "2v2" not "2d2" and who on earth would spend so much money on developing the f-15, f-16, f-18, f-22 and f-35 if the f-14 was the best all along? Why not just make more f-14s?
supasonicman 1 year ago
@supasonicman Your comment has proved wrong, F-14's beat A-4's and F-5's which are just as nimble as F-16's. In fact, the Navy lightened their F-16's and designated it F-16N in the late 1970's. Numerous wins against F-16N's, F-15's, A-4's, F-5's, etc have been recorded. F-14's lost as well, not every student pilot will win. Remember that they are flying against Top Gun instructors, the best in the world. You really make it sound like the F-14 couldn't handle itself...well it damn well did!

Is it me or did this pilot really drop this F-14 hard on the landing??? Kinda harsh for a "final landing" I imagined something a little more graceful considering it was a full stretch of runway :)

@Jameson4Life i agree maybe because there used to hard carrier landings wich are tough on the jet that shows how strong the landing gears are on the tomcat

mahdi1806 1 year ago
@mahdi1806 absolutly right 40 of them still are f14 a's ofcourse
KEEPitGREEN4201 1 year ago
Here are the facts: The people in the Navy were concerned over the reliability of the AIM-54s due to them being so old. The F-14 was too expensive to maintain. It's lifecycle costs were enormous. The entire purpose of the F-14 was fleet defence against soviet fighters and bombers. The cold war ended and the threat was considered non existant.
Grumman offered to update the F-14 into a Super Tomcat... they infact offered at least 3 different updates to it. They were all too expensive.
mrsiCkstar 1 year ago
The F/A-18 is cheaper and does the job of both the F-14 AND the A-6 and does them well.
You self proclaimed experts need to do some reading before you come here and spout nonesense out of your rear ends. Get your facts from somewhere other than AceCombat on the PS3.
mrsiCkstar 1 year ago
@mrsiCkstar Now in terms of combat, how does the Super Hornet fair compaired to the Tomcat. I flew both, but I'm curious to know you're opinion and what backs it up.
furiouswings 1 year ago
@furiouswings if you really did fly both then I'm sure you know better than me. My point is not that the superbug could beat the F-14 in BVR or WVR. My point is simply that with the end of the cold war the F-14 became unnesessary and it was expensive and old. So why would they keep it if they have a cheaper alternative that is truly multirole as well? I think the days of fighters being designed for a single mission are gone. The F-22 will probably be the last.
mrsiCkstar 1 year ago
@mrsiCkstar It's simply cheaper and more efficient to have a carrier full of 18's doing all the types of missions, instead of F-14s for fleet defence, F/A-18s for strike, A-6s for refueling and electrnic warfare etc.
The F-14 is one of my absolute favorites, I was sad to see it go, but I understand the reasons why it had to be done and they make sense to me. Some people still consider the P-51 to be the best ever fighter. They can't fly forever you know. Things change and war has changed.
mrsiCkstar 1 year ago
@mrsiCkstar Also, how many fighters have been shot down in recent wars? You can probably count them with two hands or less. A/A capability isn't the only thing that matters. More and more a fighters primary role is strike missions. The Super Hornet beats the Tomcat in this area hands down. Nowadays a fighter only needs the ability to defend itself if it needs to. Big aerial engagements are a thing of the past now.
mrsiCkstar 1 year ago
@mrsiCkstar War, war never changes. However the way it is waged does.
vadersky94 1 year ago
@mrsiCkstar I can agree with most of what you said. However, the F-14 is more than a match for even the Super Hornet at WVR. The Super Hornet does have a slow speed advantage, but not by much. One advantage the F-14 had over most fighters is the fact that it could gain or at least maintain speed in a high g turning fight due to its variable geometry. But I must say, your information is correct. I was just curious. Keep it up.
furiouswings 1 year ago
@mrsiCkstar ur right but im sorry i have to disagree with u on the part were u said that the hornet can do the tomcats job i dont think so. alot of countrys have the f18 even the f18e superhornet what country besides iran has f14's none
KEEPitGREEN4201 1 year ago
@KEEPitGREEN4201 I'm not sure I understand what you mean. What I meant was that the F/A-18E can do the fleet defence role (which was the F-14's job). It's not as perfectly suited to the job as the Tomcat was, but it can do it good enough. Yeah Iran has F-14s. But they're all old models and their AIM-54s are old as well. I wonder if much of their equipment is even usable anymore. Does anyone know when they last received spares from the States? Has to be a looooong time ago.

i agree with you, but the navy is not looking to honor but to money, it was to expensive for repair.
This tomcat was an icon of US navy, and i agree with you again: They can be ashamed for replacing it with ugly hornet..
glazuna 2 years ago
too expensive to repair that is the biggest crock of shit it is not because it was too expensive to repair all the spare parts were already paid for all the personell were already trained for repairing the planes and the parts and naval personell get paid like the rest of the military on a salary they dont get overtime dont buy that our tomcats were too expensive to repair that is not the truth
TheScrumpty 1 year ago
@TheScrumpty The truth is that they were old. You can only squeeze so much life out of an airframe. They WERE going to keep building 'D's until 1998 but Chenney got pissed at Grumman and cancelled that . A few of them could of kept soldiering on but that becomes pointless because the service needs at least a hundred or so operational airframes for things to be efficient. Plus the 'D's age faster because their heavier. IF you have ever seen a 'D' you'll notice that its 'patched' up a lot.
IknowJohnLear 1 year ago
yes they were old, why were they so old? the air force gets new replacement planes for its fighters as they age, why don't the navy, why was the hornet a lot newer of an airframe given the monies for a major upgrade over the older tomcat? the hornet got its first upgrade after only 7 years of service and it second and first major one after ony 10 years after that the tomcat did not get its first till 17 years and first second till 23 years????????
TheScrumpty 1 year ago
@TheScrumpty, Thats a loaded question, but basically the hornet had lobbyists in washington and the tomcat didn't. Also the Tomcat was already old by the time desert storm came around and thats when all these decisions were made. The AF is in worse shape than the navy. Look at whats hapening to their F-15s, their falling apart left and right. IIRC they haven't made a new F-15C since 1984. Everyone is just holding their breath for the JSF.
IknowJohnLear 1 year ago
yes and dont that tell you something? when have you ever heard of such an inferior plane that it needed lobbyists to get it to live?
TheScrumpty 1 year ago
@TheScrumpty One of the other biggest reasons we rushed getting rid of them is that parts were STILL illegally going to Iran. There are still a lot of disloyal people high up in the government that were making a lot of extra dough on this jet, thats why all the remaining ones at amarg are toast. Its a reason of national security. I get so tired of people asking if the tomcat is coming back or why was the tomcat retired. Its lucky it lasted this long since desert storm.
IknowJohnLear 1 year ago
yes i do understand all of this and dont have any problems with that but my problem is that iran bought the F-14A not the F-14D and there was not a single reason to stop making the F-14D or to start making the F-14 quickstrike or tomcat-21, who's parts would have been useless to iran and the navy would still have an air superiority fighter and interceptor
TheScrumpty 1 year ago
@TheScrumpty, I just told you the reason...Dich Chenney cancelled the order for further F-14Ds beyond 1992 because he was pissed that grumman jacked up the price to cover their asses, so he got pissed and destroyed all the tools to make them, so, unless we started from scratch, no more F-14s. BTW 90% parts commonality between F14D and 'A'. ps when have you ever seen a tomcat21 prototype! That was NEVER going to happen. (I only wish)
IknowJohnLear 1 year ago
yes airframe wise the differences between the A and D models were 90% the same, but that is where it ends, the D models had different engines, FCC's avionics even the seats were different, i have never seen the tomcat-21 as far as i know they never made one, but i do wish they had that would have been really neat to see

TheScrumpty 1 year ago
@TheScrumpty Why are you even comparing our own country's 2 aircraft? No one should even be doing that. The answer is plain and simple. The whole reason we have the new Super Hornet is because we needed such fighters to compete with the new planes the enemy has. We needed newer planes to compete with enemy fighters such as the SU-33 and MIG-29. Are you that stupid? The Super Hornet is a worthy opponent, or I should say superior opponent for the both aircraft.

This aircraft was designed from the oputset to the best in the world and was never outclassed in it's role. The D model was an awesome strike aircraft as well and a shitload faster than the F/A-18e/f. If they had of spent some more money on them, they would have blitzed the Super hornet in every conceivable way! An incredible shame!
philmonster 2 years ago 3
@1991aj2 If the F-18 dosen't have what it takes, then why is the US Air Force considering buying Super Hornets then?
SuperHornetsVFA41 1 year ago
well since the air force did not want it when it was the YF-17 why would they want it now that it is heavier and bulkier and less maneuverable then the YF-17 was, good luck on getting people to believe that crap, but you never know our politicians could mandate it on the air force like they did on the navy
TheScrumpty 1 year ago
@TheScrumpty you think the navy wasn't asking for a new fighter when the only reason the F14s could beat the migs was because of our better trained pilots. With the legacy fighters now on the same playing field or even inferior to the newest SU class russian jets, we need newer better planes. We need to stay ahead and whether or not the military is asking for it, politicians must make sure we are staying one, or in the raptors case, several steps ahead of the enemy.
SuperHornetsVFA41 1 year ago
@SuperHornetsVFA41 The US Navy and politicians even say that there needs to be a better aircraft to replace the Super Hornet. And the Super Hornet is such a superior aircraft to the current enemy aircraft, the US Air Force is even considering to buy the Super Hornet to solve their 'fighter gap'. India and Australia as well are also thinking about buying the aircraft. Malaysia also hasn't made up their mind between the Super Hornet or the SU-30. That's how great the Super Hornet is.
SuperHornetsVFA41 1 year ago
@SuperHornetsVFA41 But I must admit. Range is the biggest problem with the aircraft. Although the range is inferior to the F-14, it is still a conformable fighter and one of the greatest modern fighter's of today.
SuperHornetsVFA41 1 year ago
@TheScrumpty Whoa, first off, no one mandated the Super Hornet to the air force. They're thinking about buying it. The Air Force WANT's the Super Hornet because they know it's better than the F-15 and F-16. I even read it on the Air Force times. And if the YF-17 and the F/A-18 the same thing, why didn't they just name it the F/A-17? No ones mandating the Super Hornet. The Navy wanted the Hornet because its got two engines, its small so more plane's can be on the deck, and it's advanced and
