The EDF is mounted on a platform with some form of accelerometer, the signal from the accelerometer is used to trigger the LED which then illuminates the fan at that time. By adjusting the trigger point of the LED driver the heavy side of the fan can be determined. The fan needs to be marked to determine where the light is illuminating.
