3hp does not mean 3mph and 2 electric trolling motors are okay because they are quiet and make less of a mess but the range is a lot less and you need a 50lb battery. So these small gas weighing 30lbs are lighter overall and power wise a 3hp is about 150lb thrust- unobtainable with an electric.
Get a 5hp or smaller verticle shaft Briggs w/ aluminum block, and mount it to an old lower unit, might need a machined adapter plate or bell houseing though.
Looks like he built a box inside the boat and then mounted the motor inside the box.Yeeah....does that behave well?

Uncle used to have an old jet powered canoe that looked to be something from the fifties. Engine was able to turn 360 deg.

electric trolling motors are the best... ideal on a canoe... probably get up to
5mph...depending on thrust pounds. silent operation...it's great.
